맥스 베네블 코치와의 인연은 2013년 1월말부터 시작이 되었다. 이당시 나는 SK와이번스 팀 감독시절이었고 팀이 좀더 다이나믹하고 화려한 타격을 선보이기 위해 베네블 코치를 어렵게 영입하게 되었다.

베네블 코치는 활달한 성격과 친화력으로 인해 코치들뿐만 아니라 프런트 그리고 팬들과도 좋은 관계를 가졌다. 특히 한국 문화나 한국 음식에 많은 관심을 갖고 있어 어디를 가나 음식을 가리지 않고 잘 먹었던 기억이 있다.

베네블 코치의 와이프 또한 동양의 문화에 대해 많은 관심을 갖고 있어서 한번은 아내가 베네블 와이프를 데리고 단둘이 경주로 여행을 떠났다. 서툰 영어로 베네블 와이프랑 대한민국의 역사와 전통에 대해 이야기하고 맛난 것도 먹으며 좋은 시간을 보냈다던 아내의 이야기가 생각이 난다.

비록 긴 시간은 아니지만 베네블 코치와 함께 생활하던 1년 동안 그의 아들에 대한 이야기도 많이 듣게 되었다. 베네블 코치는 입에서 침이 마르도록 아들 자랑을 많이 한다. (아들 자랑은 동서양을 막론하고 다 똑같다.) 특히 그의 아들은 운동도 잘하지만 상당히 똑똑한 아들이라며 연신 자랑을 했다.

베네블 코치가 늘 자랑하던 아들의 이름은 Will venable이다. Will Venable은 대학시절 아무나 들어갈 수 없는 프린스턴 대학교를 졸업할 정도로 뛰어난 학구파였고 운동도 잘한 선수였다. 그랬던 그가 작년 11월초에 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀의 감독이 되었다. 베네블 코치의 아들이 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀의 감독이 되었다는 소식을 멀리 캄보디아에서 듣고 얼마나 기뻤는지 모른다. 나 또한 7년 동안 몸담았던 시카고 화이트삭스 팀은 버락 오바마 전 대통령이 가장 좋아하고 애착을 갖고 있는 팀이다.

메이저리그가 이제 몇일만 있으면 시즌이 시작이 된다. 지금 한창 시범경기로 인해 벌써 수많은 팬들이 자기가 좋아하는 팀을 응원하고 있다. 나 또한 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀을 응원중이다. 그렇게 사랑하고 애착을 갖고 있던 팀인데 지난해 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀은 메이저리그 사상 최악의 성적을 올렸다. 시즌 개막부터 약체로 분류됐지만 그렇게 최악의 성적을 올릴 것이라곤 전혀 예상하지 못했다.

지난해 5월에 한 차례 14연패를 기록하더니, 7월부터 다시 시작된 연패는 무려 21연패까지 이어졌다. 메이저리그 한 시즌 최다 패는 뉴욕 메츠가 1962년 기록한 120패였고, 이때부터 신기록을 향한 카운트다운이 시작됐다. 결국 시즌 막바지에 접어 들자 9월23일, 샌디에이고에 패하며 1962년도에 뉴욕 메츠 팀이 세운 120패 타이 기록을 세우고 말았다.

그럼에도 아직 6경기나 더 남았다. 다행히 에인절스와의 홈 3연전에서 3연승을 거두었다. 역사적인 신기록 121패째를 홈에서 세우지 않아 얼마나 다행인지 모른다. 그러나 그것도 잠시 시즌 마지막 원정경기인 디트로이트 팀과의 경기에서 1패를 더하면서 결국 역사의 주인공이 됐다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀의 2024년도 시즌 최종 성적은 41승121패, 승률 0.253.

시즌이 끝남과 동시에 감독이 바뀌는 건 너무나 당연했다. 2024년도 페드로 그리폴 감독은 시즌 중 잘렸고, 대행이었던 그래디 사이즈모어 감독도 자리를 이어받지는 못했다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀은 ‘최악의 팀’을 수렁에서 끌어올리기 위한 적임자를 찾기 위해 동분서주 했다. 누가 봐도 어려운, 누가 봐도 썩 하고 싶지 않은 시카고 화이트 삭스의 2025시즌 신임 감독을 Will Venable 임명했다.

많은 사람들이 Will Venable 감독을 선수시절 그저 그런 선수로 생각하고 있지만 나는 절대 그렇게 생각하지 않는다. 일단 메이저리그 선수가 되었다는것 자체가 하늘의 별을 따는것 만큼 어렵다는 것을 나는 너무나 잘 알고 있다. Will Venable 선수시절 9시즌을 뛰었지만 주전으로 뛴 건 몇 시즌 안 된다. 그의 메이저리그 통산 타율은 2할4푼9리다.

Will Venable 감독은 은퇴 후 선수 보다는 코치로서 두각을 더 잘 나타냈다. 2020시즌부터 감독 자리가 빌 때마다 후보로 거론 될 정도로 그의 지도력은 이미 메이저리그에서 인정을 받았다. 특히 지난 2023년 텍사스 브루스 보치 감독의 ‘부감독’으로 월드시리즈 우승에 힘을 보탤 정도로 뛰어난 지도력을 갖춘 리더였다.

미국은 운동과 학업을 병행하지 않으면 운동을 할 수 없다는 것을 나는 잘 알고 있다. 2013년 Will Venable 감독의 아버지인 맥스 베너블 코치의 말에 의하면 그의 아들은 대학시절 원래 건축가가 되고 싶었지만 수학이 너무 어려워 포기했고, 인류학을 전공으로 택했다고 한다. Will Venable 감독은 학생시절부터 시험 보는 것보다 논문 쓰는 걸 더 좋아했다는 그의 인터뷰를 보고 앞으로 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀을 어떻게 이끌어 가고 어떻게 팀 칼러로 만들어 갈 것인지 기대가 된다. 특히 Will Venable 감독은 미국과 일본 그리고 아버지로부터 귀가 따갑도록 들은 한국 야구에 대한 인류학적 관점으로 본 동,서 야구에 대해 어느 누구보다 뛰어난 리더가 될 것이라 기대해 본다.

언론에 의하면 작년 MLB 사상 최악의 성적을 올린 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀이 Will Venable 감독을 새롭게 임명하기까지 무려 40명의 후보군을 추렸다는 기사를 보았다. 그리고 최종적으로 시험을 보았는데 그것이 ‘논술시험’이었다고 한다. 야구라는 종목에 대한 철학, 경기 운영 스타일과 팀 문화 구축에 대한 구체적인 질문이 있었고, ‘이에 대해 논술하시오’가 필수 제출 서류였다고 한다.

구단 운영진은 “정답이 있는 건 아니었지만 이를 통해 후보들이 자신의 생각을 어떻게 정리하는지, 야구의 특정 분야에 대한 그들의 관점을 확인하기 위한 절차였다”고 한다. 인류학을 공부했었던 Will Venable 감독은 ‘그가 어떤 사람인지, 메이저리그 감독으로서 어떻게 성공할 계획인지 쉽게 이해할 수 있도록 모든 것을 세분화해서 설명했다’는 평가를 받아 최종적으로 2025년 새로운 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀을 이끌어 갈 감독으로 임명되었다.

지금도 잊혀지지 않는다. 맥스 베네플 감독과 와이프가 언제나 자기 아들을 자랑스럽게 이야기 했던 기억이 나의 뇌리에서 사라지지 않고 있다. 올해부터 새롭게 지휘봉을 잡은 Will Venable 감독이 이전에 보여주지 못한 멋진 플레이와 성적을 기대해 본다.

My relationship with Coach Max Benable began in late January 2013. At that time, I was the manager of the SK Wyverns, and I had difficulty recruiting Coach Benable to show a more dynamic and colorful batting performance.

Due to his lively personality and affinity, Coach Venable had a good relationship with not only the coaches but also the front desk and fans. In particular, he is very interested in Korean culture and Korean food, so I remember eating well wherever I went.

Coach Venable's wife is also very interested in the culture of the East, so once, she took her Venable wife on a trip to Gyeongju alone. It reminds me of my wife, who had a good time talking about the history and tradition of Korea with Venable's wife in poor English and eating delicious food.

During his one-year stint with Benable, he learned a lot about his son, though not for a long time. Benable brags a lot about his son, making his mouth water. (Son boasting is the same for both East and West.) In particular, his son boasted repeatedly that he was a fairly smart son, even though he was good at sports.
Coach Benable's son's name is Will Venable. Will Venable was an accomplished student and athletic player, graduating from Princeton University, which was not open to anyone during college. He then became the coach of the Chicago White Sox in early November last year. I was so happy to hear that Coach Benable's son became the coach of the Chicago White Sox in Cambodia. The Chicago White Sox team, which I have also worked for for for seven years, is former President Barack Obama's favorite and favorite team.

The season will begin in just a few days for Major League Baseball. With exhibition games in full swing, many fans are already rooting for their favorite team.
