오늘은 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀의 구단주인 제리 레인스도프 (Jerry Reinsdorf) 와 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀의 대표인 켄 윌리엄스 (Ken Williams)를 잠시 생각해 본다. 레인스도프 구단주는 야구 뿐 아니라 NBA 프로농구팀인 시카고 불스 (Chicago Bulls) 팀도 갖고 있을 정도로 어마어마한 재력가다.

우리나라에서도 잘 알려진 농구의 황제 마이클 조던 (Michael Jordan) 선수도 시카고 불스팀 소속이였고 심지어 그가 화려하게 활동하던 시절 레인스도프도 팀의 구단주로 있었다. 과연 레인스도프 구단주가 없었다면 마이클 조던 선수가 오늘날에 농구의 황제로 불리어 질 수 있었을까?

삼성 라이온즈 팀에서 16년간의 선수생활을 마치고 1998년 미국으로 건너갔을 때 처음으로 들어간 팀은 클리블랜드 인디언스 마이너리그 싱글A 팀이었다. 1999년도에는 시카고 화이트 삭스 트리플A 팀에 들어갔고 그 다음해인 2000년부터 2006년까지 7년 동안 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀의 메이저리그에서 지도자 생활을 했었다.

많은 세월이 흘러 지금은 웃으며 그 시절을 회상하지만, 낯설고 물선 미국 메이저리그에서 처음 지도자 생활을 시작했을 때만 해도 언어와 문화의 장벽에 막혀 많은 어려움을 겪었다. 가끔 포기하고 싶은 마음도 들었다. 그럴 때마다 나를 위로해 주고 도움을 준 사람이 바로 제리 레인스도프 구단주와 켄 윌리엄스 대표였다. 켄 윌리엄스 대표는 2000년도 당시 General Manager 였다. 스텝진들과 미팅할 때면 그는 언제나 나를 배려해 주고 서툰 영어실력이라도 꼭 한마디씩 할 수 있도록 시간을 내 주었다.

두사람은 나를 이방인으로 대하지 않고 7년 동안 언제나 나를 가족처럼 생각해주며 편안하게 해 주었다. 특히 가족 모임을 가졌을 때 레인스도프 구단주가 우리 가족한테 참 친절하게 대해 주었다. 서툰 영어로 의사 소통을 할 때면 언제나 웃음으로 대해주던 레인스도프 구단주는 지금도 우리 가족에게 잊을 수 없는 멋진 사람으로 기억되고 있다.

메이저리그시절 70을 바라보는 나이에도 잊을 수 없는 하나의 추억이 있다. 처음 메이저리그 코치가 되었던 2000년도에 모든 캠프를 다 끝내고 애리조나 투산에서 전용비행기를 타고 시카고 미드웨이 공항에 내렸을 때이다.

시카고 미드웨이 공항에 내리니 메이저리그 선수들의 자동차가 공항 활주로에 일렬로 서 있는데 태어나 그렇게 화려하고 좋은 차들은 난생 처음 보았다. 그 중 가장 눈에 띄는 것은 맨 앞에 서 있던 영화에나 나올법한 긴 검정 리무진 차였다. 도대체 저 긴 리무진 차는 누가 타는지 궁금했다.

문제는 메이저리그 선수들이 아닌 나였다. 시카고에는 공항이 두 곳이 있다. 국제공항인 오헤어 공항과 미드웨이 공항이다. 오헤어 공항은 북쪽에 있고 미드웨이 공항은 남쪽에 있다. 미드웨이 공항에서 오헤어 공항까지 자동차로 무려 한시간 반이상 걸릴 정도로 멀리 떨어져 있다.

당시 내가 살고 있는 집은 북쪽인 오헤어 공항 근처에 있었고 나는 이들의 시스템을 몰라 차를 공항에 가져다 놓지 않았다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 직원에게 나는 차가 없는데 어떻게 하면 되는지 물어 보았더니 구단 직원이 나를 가르켜 “저기 차가 있잖아” 한다. 그런데 아무리 찾아 보아도 택시가 없었다.

그래서 다시 직원에게 “내가 타고 갈 택시가 어딨어?” 했더니 그 많은 차들을 가리키며 “맨 앞 리무진이 리 (Lee) 가 타고 갈 차야” 라는 것이다. 너무 놀래서 한동안 입이 다물어지지 않았던 기억이 난다. 어떻게 영화에나 나올법한 최고의 리무진 차가 오늘 내가 타고 갈 차란 말인가? 믿어지지 않아 가만히 있으니 켄 윌리엄스 GM 이 특별히 나를 위해 편안하게 집에까지 갈 수 있도록 배려해 주었다고 한다.

2006년 모든 시즌을 다 끝내고 한국으로 돌아오기 전 구단주 레인스도프에게 찾아가 “나는 한국으로 들어간다” 라고 했더니 그는 아쉬워하며 나에게 이런 이야기를 했다. “지금까지 선진야구를 배우고, 보았던 모든 것들을 한국에 들어가 젊은 선수들에게 가르쳐 주라”는 것이다. 그러면서 덧붙이기를 “너는 훌륭한 지도자이니 한국에 가서도 훌륭한 지도자가 될거야” 라며 격려해 주었던 이야기가 아직도 나의 뇌리에서 사라지지 않고 있다.

많은 세월이 흘러 지금 돌이켜보면 제리 레인스도프 (Jerry Reinsdorf) 구단주와 켄 윌리엄스 (Ken Williams GM) 의 배려가 없었다면 나는 아마 그곳에서 1년도 제대로 버티지 못했을 것이다. 그들의 배려와 사랑으로 인해 구단주와 단장의 관계가 아닌 친구로 지낼 수 있었고, 또 지금도 두 사람은 나의 영원한 친구다. 그리고 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 함께 생활했던 많은 코치들과 구단 운영팀, 그리고 선수들 덕분에 내 생애 최고의 시간을 보냈다고 해도 지나침이 없다.

Today, consider for a moment Jerry Reinsdorf, the owner of the Chicago White Sox, and Ken Williams, the head of the Chicago White Sox. The owner of the team is so wealthy that he has not only baseball but also the Chicago Bulls, an NBA professional basketball team.

Michael Jordan, the emperor of basketball in Korea, was also a member of the Chicago Bulls, and even Rainesdorf was the owner of the team during his splendid career. Could Michael Jordan be called the emperor of basketball today without the owner of Rainesdorf?

When he moved to the U.S. in 1998 after a 16-year career with the Samsung Lions, the first team he played for was the Cleveland Indians Minor League Single-A team. He joined the Chicago White Sox Triple-A team in 1999 and coached the Chicago White Sox for seven years from 2000 to 2006.

Many years later, I recall those days with a smile, but when I first started teaching in an unfamiliar and open major league, I had a lot of difficulties being blocked by language and culture barriers. Sometimes I wanted to give up. It was Jerry Rainsdorf, the owner of the team, and Ken Williams, who comforted and helped me every time I did so. Ken Williams was General Manager back in 2000. During meetings with the staff, he was always considerate of me and gave me time to speak even my poor English.

The two of them did not treat me as a stranger, but always thought of me as family and made me comfortable for 7 years. Especially when I had a family meeting, the owner of Rainsdorp was very kind to my family. The owner of Rainsdorp, who always treated me with laughter when communicating in poor English, is still remembered as an unforgettable and wonderful person to my family.

Even at the age of 70, I have an unforgettable memory. When I first became a major league coach in 2000, I finished all of my camps and got off at Chicago Midway Airport on a private plane from Tucson, Arizona.

When I got off at Chicago Midway Airport, Major League Baseball players' cars lined up on the airport's runway, and I've never seen such a fancy and nice car in my life. The long black limousine that stood in the front was the most noticeable of them. I wondered who was riding that long limousine.

The problem was me, not the major league players. There are two airports in Chicago. They are O'Hare Airport and Midway Airport, which are international airports. O'Hare Airport is in the north and Midway Airport is in the south. It is so far away that it takes more than an hour and a half by car from Midway Airport to O'Hare Airport.

At the time, my house was near O'Hare Airport in the north, and I didn't know their system, so I didn't bring my car to the airport. I asked the Chicago White Sox employee what to do when I don't have a car, and the team employee pointed at me and said, "There's a car over there." But no matter how I looked, I couldn't find a taxi.

So I asked the staff again, "Where's the taxi I'm going to take?" and they pointed to all those cars and said, "The limousine at the front is the one that Lee will take." I was so surprised that I remember not being able to shut up for a while. How can the best limousine in a movie be the one I'm going to take today? I can't believe it, so GM Ken Williams gave me special consideration to go home comfortably for me.

Before returning to Korea after the end of all seasons in 2006, I visited Rainsdorf, the owner of the team, and he said, "I'm going to Korea," and he told me this regretfully. "Learn advanced baseball so far, and go into Korea and teach young players everything you've seen." Then, the story that encouraged me, "You're a great leader, so I'll be a great leader even when I go to Korea," still hasn't disappeared from my mind.

Looking back, many years later, I probably wouldn't have lasted a year without the consideration of Jerry Reinsdorf and Ken Williams, GM. Because of their consideration and love, I was able to be friends, not the relationship between the owner and the general manager, and they are still my friends forever. And it is not too much to say that I had the best time of my life thanks to the many coaches, the team management and the players I had with the Chicago White Sox.
