올해도 전국적으로 다니다 보니 꼭 챙겨야 할 선수를 제대로 챙기지 못해 늘 미안한 마음이다. 야구인으로서 어린 아이들이 야구에 대한 열정을 불태우는 것을 보면 늘 대견하다. 내가 멘토가 돼 야구를 시작하게 되었다는 이야기를 주위 사람들로부터 듣게 되면 야구인으로서 감사할 뿐이다.

내가 기주흥이를 알게 된 것도 어느덧 10년이 다 되어 간다. 초등학교 3학년 학생이던 주흥이가 어느덧 고등학교 3학년이 되었다. 이미 프로야구 스카우트 명단에 올라갈 정도로 좋은 기량을 보여주고 있다. 어리게만 생각했던 주흥이가 이제 부모를 먼저 생각하는 의젓한 청년이 되어가고 있다.

내가 주흥이에게 늘 강조한 이야기가 있다. '혼자 잘 되려고 하는 야구가 아니라 야구를 통해 함께 나누고 더 큰 일들을 해 나가는 훌륭한 선수가 되어야 한다.'며 이야기 했는데 지금까지 한번도 흐트러짐 없이 잘 따라주어 야구인 선배로서 고마울 뿐이다.

주흥이는 어린시절부터 여러 포지션이 있지만 굳이 포수 하겠다며 고집을 피웠던 선수였다. 포수가 가장 매력적이고 자기에게 딱 맞은 포지션이라며 그 힘든 포수를 지금까지 잘하고 있다. 그러면서 늘 마음 깊은 곳에 품은 꿈을 이야기 한다.

기주흥 선수가 나를 만날 때마다 '고등학교 3학년이 되면 이만수 포수상을 받는 것이 자신의 목표'라며 당찬 이야기를 한다. 주흥이가 우신고로 옮기고부터 기량이 급성장했음을 어느 누구보다 김경기 감독이 잘 알고 있다. 우신고 김경기 감독은 기주흥 선수가 충분히 프로에 들어갈 수 있을 정도로 뛰어난 기량을 갖추고 있고 또 포수로서도 얼마든지 좋은 선수가 될 수 있다며 자랑한다.

또한 주위에서는 무엇보다 주흥이가 좋은 지도자인 김경기 감독을 만나 지금 한창 꽃을 피우고 있다고 이야기 한다. 기주흥 선수는 어린 나이에 많은 어려움 속에서도 지금까지 흔들리지 않고 오로지 본인이 갖고 있는 목표를 향해 열심히 노력하며 여기까지 달려왔다. 기주흥 선수는 어떤 어려운 환경에서도 개인연습을 절대 소홀히 하지 않는 정말 노력형의 선수다. 그래서 그런지 주흥이는 지금보다 미래가 더 기대되는 선수다.

기회 될 때마다 기주흥 선수를 만나 야구선수로서 어떻게 운동하고, 어떻게 팀을 이끌어 가며 어떻게 경기에 임할 것인지, 또 야구를 하는 신앙인으로서 자신의 꿈과 비전에 대해 어떻게 생각하고 기도해야 할지 등에 대해서도 하나씩 이야기해주려 했지만 자주 그렇게 하지 못해 늘 미안한 마음이다.

그럼에도 불구하고 기주흥 학생이 출석하고 있는 교회의 담당 선생님께 시합 때문에 주일 예배를 못 드릴 때는 개인적으로 성경을 읽고, 기도하며 최선을 다해 경기에 임하고 시간이 가능할 때에는 성경공부 반에도 참여하며 신앙생활을 열정적으로 하고 있다는 이야기를 들을 때마다 대견하고 기특한 마음을 지울 수 없다.

올해 가장 중요한 고등학교 3학년 학생이다. 이제 몇 달만 지나면 프로 지명과 대학 진학의 과정을 겪어야 한다. 주흥이가 앞으로 어떤 결정을 할지 잘 모르나 나는 언제나 주흥이를 응원할 것이다.

As I am traveling nationwide again this year, I always feel sorry for not being able to properly take care of the players I must take care of. As a baseball player, I am always proud to see young children burn up their passion for baseball. When I hear from people around me that I became a mentor and started playing baseball, I am just grateful as a baseball player.

It's been almost 10 years since I got to know Ki Joo-heung. Joo-heung, who was a third-year elementary school student, is already a third-year high school student. He is already showing good skills enough to be on the professional baseball scout list. Joo-heung, who thought only young, is now becoming a decent young man who puts his parents first.

There is a story that I always emphasized to Joo-heung. I said, "I need to be a great player who shares and does bigger things through baseball, not baseball that tries to do well alone." I'm just grateful as a senior baseball player for following me well without being disturbed.

Although Joo-heung has many positions since his childhood, he insisted that he would be a catcher. He has been doing well as a catcher until now, saying that the catcher is the most attractive and suitable position for him. He always talks about his dream that he cherishes deeply.

Whenever Ki Joo-heung meets me, he says confidently, "My goal is to receive the Lee Man-soo Catcher Award when I become a third grader in high school." More than anyone else, head coach Kim Gyeonggi-do knows that Joo-heung's skills have grown rapidly since moving to Woo Shin-go. Coach Woo Shin-go Kim boasts that Ki Joo-heung is good enough to enter the professional league and that he can be a good player as a catcher.

In addition, people around him say that Joo-heung is in full bloom right now with Kim Kyung-gi, a good leader. Despite many difficulties at an early age, Ki has worked hard to achieve his goal without being swayed until now. Ki is a really hard-working player who never neglects individual practice in any difficult environment. Perhaps that's why Joo-heung is more looking forward to the future than he is now.

At every opportunity, I met Ki Joo-heung and tried to tell him how to exercise as a baseball player, how to lead the team, how to play the game, and how to think and pray about my dreams and visions as a believer in baseball, but I am always sorry that I cannot do so often.

Nevertheless, when I can't worship on Sunday because of a match to the teacher in charge of the church where Ki Joo-heung is attending, I personally read the Bible, pray, and do my best to play, and whenever I have time, I can't erase my pride and pride whenever I hear that I'm passionate about my religious life by participating in the Bible study class.

He is the most important high school senior this year. After a few months, he has to go through the process of professional nomination and university entrance. I don't know what decision Joo-heung will make in the future, but I will always support him.
