한국 야구 위원회 KBO 허구연 총재의 고문을 맡은지 벌써 4년째가 되어 간다. 허구원 총재와 함께 활동 하면서 내가 알지 못했던 것들을 많이 보고, 배우고 느끼는 중이다.

2022년 허구연 총재가 부임하자 주위에서 많은 염려와 걱정이 들려왔다. 정치인·경제인도 아닌 야구 선수 출신의 총재는 역사상 처음 있는 일이였고, 그가 과연 한국 프로야구를 잘 이끌어 갈 수 있을지에 대한 우려가 지배적인 분위기였다.

그럼에도 불구하고 작년 2024년 우리나라 프로야구 사상 유례를 찾아 볼 수 없는 사건이 발생했다. 한 시즌에 무려 천만 관중들이 야구장을 찾은 것이다. 그 어느 누구도 예상하지 못한 일이였다. 우리나라 프로야구 사상 40년이 넘도록 천만 관중 돌파는 작년이 처음이였다. 나는 허구연 총재의 끊임 없는 노력과 개혁, 그리고 프로야구가 변화하지 않으면 더 이상 생존할 수 없다는 그의 절박한 인식이 이뤄낸 결과라고 본다.

지금도 허구연 총재는 전국 야구장과 지방 단체장들을 직접 만나기 위해 방방곡곡 쉬지 않고 누비며 야구 발전을 위해 매달리고 있다. 그리고 그의 자동차 총 주행거리수가 직접 발로 뛰는 그의 열정을 증명한다. 한국 프로야구의 위기감을 느끼고, 선수 출신 총재로서 다시 올 한국 프로야구의 부흥을 위해 헌신과 최선을 다하고 있음을 옆에서 지켜보았다.

그는 현장에서 직접 뛰어 본 야구인이기에 야구 현장의 문제와 어려움을 그 누구보다 정확히 알고 있었을 것이다. 그리고 근본적인 문제를 해결하기 위해서 책상 앞이 아닌 두 발로 뛰는 현장 경영으로 끊임없이 연구하는 KBO 총재의 행보를 보여주고 있다. 특히 로봇 심판을 도입 했을 때 ‘시기 상조다', ‘어리석은 행동이다', ‘미국과 일본도 하지 않는 로봇 심판을 굳이 왜 먼저 시작하려고 하느냐?', '우리나라 프로야구가 퇴보하는 길이다' 등의 별의별 이야기들이 많았다.

그런데 매 게임때마다 KBO 사이트는 물론 각 프로야구 사이트와 인터넷 뉴스에 볼, 스트라이크 판정에 대한 ‘심판 돈 먹었다' '심판 자질 없다' '감정이 있다' 등 하루에도 몇번씩 들려오던 항의를 기억하는가? 그런데 막상 AI 로봇 심판을 도입하고부터 그런 말들은 금새 사라지고 오히려 이전보다 더 믿을 만하다며 젊은층들이 야구장을 더 많이 찾게 되었다.

거기다가 정부의 도움을 받아 KBO는 자라나는 꿈나무들과 유소년들을 위한 프로그램들을 많이 창설해 새로운 비전과 희망을 전달하고 있다. 이런 노력의 결과들로 지방 단체들이 서서히 야구장 건설에 관심을 가지게 되었으며 다양한 야구 관련 인프라를 구축하여 지역 발전과 더불어 야구 발전이라는 두 마리 토끼를 거머쥘 수 있는 토대가 구축되었다.

2024년 우리나라 프로야구 사상 처음으로 천만 관중을 돌파할 수 있었던 결정적인 원동력은 한국에서 MLB 메이저리그 개막전이 열렸기 때문이고, 미국 메이저리그 팀과 한국프로야구 팀과의 시범경기가 있었기 때문일 것이다. 메이저리그 팀이 한국에 와서 개막전을 한다는 것은 정말 놀라운 일일 수 없다. 일본 프로야구는 우리나라보다 50년이나 앞서 있다. 언론에 의하면 우리나라에서 먼저 MLB 메이저리그 개막전을 치루게 되어 일본이 야단이 났단다.

한국에서 메이저리그가 개막전을 치룰 수 있었던 것은 허구연 총재가 몇년전부터 공을 들여 뛰어다녔기 때문에 가능했다. 그리고 그가 누구보다 발 빠르게 뛰어다닌 것은 그 어느 총재보다 야구를 사랑하고 이대로는 우리나라 프로야구가 사라질 수 있다는 것을 피부로 깨달았기 때문일 것이다.

외국인들에게 우리나라만의 특별한 단체 응원 문화가 신선한 충격을 준다는 것은 이미 잘 알려져 있다. 그럼에도 KBO 허구연 총재는 어떻게 하면 한국프로야구가 가지고 있는 독특한 응원 문화와 먹거리를 좀 더 알리고 더 안락하고 편안하게 경기를 관람할 수 있을지에 대해 끈임없이 연구하며 메이저리그 발전상을 토대로 직원 및 어드바이저 그리고 야구를 전문적으로 공부하는 지식인들로부터 듣는 조언을 귀를 열고 들으며 적용시키는 노력을 해왔다.

나의 현역시절은 당연하고 4, 5년 전만 해도 젊은 연인들이 함께 야구장을 방문해서 응원하는 일은 참 드문 일이였다. 그런데 근래들어 젊은이들이 각자가 응원하는 팀이나 선수들의 유니폼을 맞춰 입고 함께 응원하며 데이트 하는것이 하나의 트렌드가 되었다는 소식을 접한 적이 있다. 그리고 작년에 그 트렌드를 몸소 실감했다. 강연을 마치고 동대구역에서 막차를 타려는데 야구 경기가 끝난 직후였는지 많은 사람들이 자기들이 응원하는 선수들의 이름이 적힌 유니폼을 입고 대합실에서 기차를 기다리고 있던것이 아닌가. 여기가 야구장인지 역인지 분간이 안 갈 정도 였다.

요즘 MZ 세대들을 보며 야구인으로서 많은 국민이 야구장을 찾는 이유가 경기를 관람하는 것 이외에 더 큰 이유가 존재하고 있음을 깨닫는다.

앞서 이야기했듯이 2024년 프로야구 개막은 KBO 허구연 총재와 임원 및 야구에 종사하는 수많은 사람들의 긴장속에 시작한 것이 사실이다. 당시 그 누구도 시도해 본 적 없고 추진해 본 적 없던 새로운 것들을 도입하면서 ‘2024년 우리나라 프로야구가 퇴보할 것인지 아니면 다시 예전의 영광을 되찾을 것인지 의 기로에 서있다’ 라는 말이 맞는 말이였는지도 모른다. 그리고 모든 프로야구 구단과 선수들이 하나가 되어 처음부터 다시 시작한다는 자세와 노력이 천만 관중이라는 기적을 일으켰다. 야구인의 한사람으로서 얼마나 감사한 일인지 모른다.

프로야구는 팬이 없으면 존재할 가치가 없다. 여전히 야구는 대한민국에서의 최고 인기 스포츠다. 수많은 팬들이 야구장을 찾고 야구를 사랑하기 때문에 가능한 일이다. 한국 야구 위원회 KBO와 프런트 그리고 현장에서 멋진 플레이를 선보이는 선수들은 팬들이 있다는 것을 명심해야 한다.

허구연 KBO 총재의 한국프로야구를 향한 노력에 경의를 표하며, 앞으로도 야구인으로서 자긍심을 가질 수 있는 야구 문화를 만들어 주길 바란다.

그래서 내가 항상 꿈꿔오던 일이 야구장에서 일상처럼 일어나길 기대한다. 1대부터 3대까지 야구장을 찾아 함께 응원하는 모습을 기대해 본다. 내일부터 우리나라 프로야구가 시작한다. 이번 시즌에 큰아들과 손자의 손을 잡고 3대가 야구장을 찾으려고 한다.

It has already been three years since I served as an adviser to the KBO President of the Korea Baseball Organization. While working with the president of Koo Hak-won, I am seeing, learning, and feeling a lot of things that I did not know.

When President Hu Jie-yeon took office in 2022, there were many concerns and concerns around him. It was the first time in history that a former baseball player, not even a politician or businessman, was a dominant concern about whether he could lead the Korean professional baseball well.

Nevertheless, an unprecedented event occurred last year in 2024 in Korean professional baseball history. As many as 10 million spectators visited the ballpark in one season. No one expected it. Last year was the first time in Korean professional baseball history to surpass 10 million spectators in more than 40 years. I think it is the result of President Hu Jie-yeon's constant efforts, reforms, and his desperate recognition that professional baseball can no longer survive unless it changes.

Even now, President Hu Jie-yeon is working tirelessly to develop baseball in person to meet with the heads of national baseball stadiums and local organizations. And his total mileage proves his passion for running on his own feet. I felt the crisis in Korean professional baseball, and as a player-turned-president, I watched from the side that he was dedicating himself and doing his best to revive Korean professional baseball.

Since he is a baseball player who has played in the field himself, he must have known the problems and difficulties of the baseball field more accurately than anyone else. In order to solve fundamental problems, the KBO president is constantly researching on-site management on two feet rather than in front of a desk. When robot referees were introduced, there were many stories such as "It's a premature time," "It's a ridiculous action," "Why do you bother to start robot referees first that even the United States and Japan do not do?" and "It's the way for Korean professional baseball to regress."

However, do you remember the protests that were heard several times a day on KBO sites as well as on each professional baseball site and Internet news, such as "I ate referee money," "I have no judge quality," and "I have feelings" for strike decisions? However, since the introduction of AI robot referees, those words have disappeared quickly, and more young people have visited the baseball stadium, saying that they are more reliable than before.

In addition, with the help of the government, KBO has created a number of programs for growing dreamers and young people to deliver new visions and hopes. As a result of these efforts, local organizations gradually became interested in building baseball stadiums, and various baseball-related infrastructure was established to lay the groundwork for both regional and baseball development.

The decisive driving force behind Korea's first major league opening in 2024 was the opening of the MLB in Korea, and the exhibition game between the U.S. Major League team and the Korean professional baseball team. It should not be surprising that a Major League team will come to Korea and play the opening game. Japanese professional baseball is 50 years ahead of Korea. According to the media, Japan was scolded for playing the MLB Major League opener first in Korea.

Major League Baseball was able to play the opening game in Korea because President Hu Jie-yeon had been running with effort for a few years. And he ran faster than anyone else because he loved baseball more than any other president and realized with his skin that Korea's professional baseball could disappear at this rate.

It is already well known that Korea's unique group cheering culture gives foreigners a fresh impression. Nevertheless, KBO President Hu Jie-yeon has been constantly studying how to promote the unique cheering culture and food of Korean professional baseball and to watch the game more comfortably and comfortably, and has made efforts to listen to and apply advice from employees, advisors, and intellectuals who specialize in baseball based on the development of Major League Baseball.

My active days were natural, and four or five years ago, it was very rare for young couples to visit the ballpark together to cheer. Recently, however, I have heard that young people have become a trend to wear the uniforms of the team or players they support, and to cheer and date together. And last year, I personally realized the trend. After the lecture, I was about to ride the last train at Dongdaegu Station, and many people were waiting for the train in the waiting room wearing uniforms with the names of the players they support. I couldn't tell whether this was a baseball stadium or a station.

Looking at the MZ generation these days, I realize that there is a greater reason why many people as baseball players visit the ballpark other than watching the game.

As mentioned earlier, it is true that the opening of professional baseball in 2024 began with the tension of KBO President Hu Jie-yeon, executives, and countless people in baseball. Introducing new things that no one had ever tried or promoted at the time, the phrase "Korea's professional baseball is at a crossroads of whether it will regress or regain its former glory in 2024" may have been correct. And the attitude and hard work of all professional baseball clubs and players to unite and start from the beginning raised the miracle of 10 million spectators. I don't know how grateful I am as a baseball player.

Professional baseball does not deserve to exist without fans. Still, baseball is the most popular sport in Korea. This is possible because countless fans visit the baseball stadiums and love baseball. The KBO, the front desk of the Korean Baseball Organization, and players who perform well on the field should keep in mind that they have fans.

We pay tribute to KBO President Koo Hu-yeon's efforts toward Korean professional baseball, and hope that he will continue to create a baseball culture where he can take pride as a baseball player.
