< 우리는 새로운 영웅을 기대하고 있다 >

우리나라 프로야구는 작년에 이어 올해도 1000만 관중을 향하여 뜨거운 인기를 이어가고 있다. 특히 올해는 KBO 역사상 최단 경기 수로 100만 관중을 돌파하는 기록까지 세웠다. 그 중심에는 연일 매진을 기록 중인 LG 트윈스가 있으며, 삼성 라이온즈 역시 구름 관중 속에서 매 경기마다 뜨거운 응원을 받고 있다.

나 역시 선수로 뛰었던 삼성 라이온즈와 지도자로 몸담았던 SSG 랜더스(구 SK 와이번스)를 응원하고 있다. 두 팀 모두 올 시즌 초반 좋은 성적을 내고 있어 매일 야구를 보는 재미가 쏠쏠하다.

한화는 올 시즌 극심한 타격 부진 속에 승리를 눈앞에서 놓친 경기가 많았다. 그럼에도 불구하고 시즌 초반 4승 9패라는 성적은 나쁘지 않다. 타선이 작년처럼 살아난다면 충분히 반등할 수 있을 것이라 믿는다.

이런 어려운 상황 속에서도 팀을 끌어올리는 젊은 선수가 있다. 바로 만 20세, 프로 3년 차의 문현빈 선수다. 그는 한화의 희망이자, KBO 리그의 차세대 스타로 떠오르고 있다. 프로야구는 언제나 문현빈 같은 새로운 얼굴이 등장할 때 관중의 발걸음을 그라운드로 이끈다는 사실을 잊지 말아야 한다.

지난 4월 5일, 대구에서 열린 삼성 라이온즈와 한화 이글스의 경기에서 한화 이글스는 1:5 로 뒤쳐지고 있었다. 그런데 8회초, 투아웃 상황, 한화가 놀라운 역전 드라마를 펼쳤다. 문현빈 선수는 단숨에 우중간으로 솔로 홈런을 날리며 5:2 추격의 불씨를 살렸다. 이어 9회초, 여전히 6:4로 지고 있는 상황에서 투아웃, 1·2루, 상대는 삼성의 마무리 투수 김재윤였다. 볼카운트 2-2, 5구째 떨어지는 포크볼을 문현빈 선수는 걷어 올렸고, 그 공은 우측 담장을 넘어가는 역전 3점 홈런을 쏘아 올렸다. 이 순간, TV를 보며 나도 모르게 말로 표현할 수 없는 전율이 느껴졌다.

오늘(8일) 나는 대전 계룡대에서 육·해·공군 장교들을 대상으로 강연을 한다. 강연을 어떻게 시작할까 며칠 고민했는데, 이 극적인 순간을 소개하며 문을 열면 좋겠다는 생각이 들었다. 그래서 나는 문현빈 선수의 이야기를 시작점으로 삼았다.
이날 강연에서 준비한 주제는 다음과 같다.

Korean professional baseball continues to be popular with 10 million spectators this year, following last year. In particular, this year, it even set a record of exceeding 1 million spectators with the shortest number of games in KBO history. At the center of it is the LG Twins, who have been selling out every day, and the Samsung Lions are also receiving hot support every game in the cloud.

Amid the deep slump in batting this season, the Hanwha Eagles missed many games to win the title. Nevertheless, its early season record of four wins and nine losses is not bad. If the lineup recovers like last year, it will be able to rebound sufficiently.

There is a young player who raises his team even in such a difficult situation. He is a 20-year-old professional player with three years of experience. He is emerging as the next star of the KBO League and a hope of the Hanwha Eagles. It should not be forgotten that professional baseball always leads the audience to the ground when a new face like Moon Hyun-bin emerges.

On Apr. 5, the Hanwha Eagles were trailing 1:5 in the match between the Samsung Lions and the Hanwha Eagles in Daegu. But in the top of the eighth inning, the situation of the two-out, Hanwha showed an amazing reversal drama. Moon Hyun-bin immediately hit a solo home run to the right-center field, saving the spark of the 5:2 chase. Then, in the top of the ninth inning, with the team still losing 6:4, the two-out, first and second bases, was Kim Jae-yoon, Samsung's closer. Moon kicked up a fork ball that fell from the 2-2 pitch to the 5th pitch, and the ball hit a come-from-behind three-run home run over the right fence. At this moment, I felt a thrill that I could not express in words while watching TV.

Today (August 8) I will give a lecture to army, navy, and air force officers at Gyeryongdae in Daejeon. I thought about how to start the lecture for a few days, but I thought it would be nice to open the door by introducing this dramatic moment.
