< 끝까지 함께 뛰는 사람, 권혁돈 감독의 동행 >

이번 인도네시아 재능기부를 준비하며 내가 적극적으로 추천한 사람이 있다. 바로 야구 지도자로서 무려 29년의 경력의 베테랑, 현재 쉐마기독학교 HBC 유소년 야구단을 이끌며 오랜 경험과 뛰어난 지도력으로 많은 이들에게 귀감이 되고 있는 권혁돈 감독이다.

권혁돈 감독은 서울의 야구 명문인 신일중·고등학교를 졸업한 후, 그곳에서 지도자 생활을 시작했다. 29년간의 감독 경험을 통해 선수들과 코칭 스태프를 효과적으로 이끌어가는 능력을 갖추고 있다. 그의 체계적인 훈련 방식과 열정은 50년 넘게 야구 인생을 살아온 나조차도 감탄하며 조언을 구할 정도다.

그는 선수별 맞춤형 훈련 프로그램을 운영하며, 기본기부터 고급 기술까지 체계적으로 지도한다. 특히, 수비 훈련에서는 반복적인 펑고 훈련을 통해 선수들의 반사 신경과 수비 능력을 극대화하고, 타격 훈련에서는 개별적인 타격 분석을 통해 선수들이 자신의 장점을 극대화할 수 있도록 돕는다. 이러한 세밀한 접근 방식이 그의 지도력을 더욱 돋보이게 한다. 특히 유소년부터 중·고·대학생까지 폭넓은 연령대를 지도하는 그의 역량은 놀라울 정도다.

권혁돈 감독은 이미 대한민국 야구 지도자들 사이에서 널리 알려진 인물이다. 적지 않은 나이에도 불구하고 여전히 현장에서 직접 펑고를 치고, 어린 선수들에게 열정적으로 가르친다. 뿐만 아니라 한 시간이 넘도록 B.P 볼을 던져주는 그의 모습은 감탄을 자아낸다.

무엇보다도 권혁돈 감독은 선수들을 사랑으로 감싸며, 자식 같은 어린 선수들을 큰아버지의 마음으로 지도한다. 이러한 태도는 스포츠를 넘어 모든 지도자들이 본받아야 할 중요한 덕목이라고 생각한다.

유소년 야구는 매달 전국대회가 열릴 정도로 바쁜 일정이 이어진다. 이를 누구보다 잘 알고 있는 나는 야구인 선배로서 권혁돈 감독에게 무리한 부탁을 할 수밖에 없었다. 특히 인도네시아 야구협회에서 ‘헐크파운데이션’에 직접적으로 요청한 만큼, 권혁돈 감독이 걸음마 단계에 있는 인도네시아 유소년과 국가대표 선수들에게 지도법과 훈련 방식을 잘 전수해 준다면 대한민국 야구의 위상을 알릴 좋은 기회가 될 것이 분명하다. 

사실, 나와 권혁돈 감독의 인연은 오랜 시간 이어져 왔다. 2014년 SK 와이번스에서 지도자 생활을 마친 후, 가장 먼저 재능기부를 떠난 곳이 바로 권혁돈 감독이 지도하던 문경 글로벌선진학교였다. 그곳에서 열흘 동안 함께하며 인연을 쌓았고, 어느덧 11년이 흘렀다.

지금도 그는 시간이 날 때마다 나와 함께 자원봉사를 하며 성실하게 도와주고 있다. 그리고 감독일로 바쁜 와중에도 권혁돈 감독은 나의 매니저가 되어 주었다. 재능기부, 강연, 교회 간증, 중요한 모임까지 모든 일정을 철저하게 관리해 주고 있다. 그가 없었다면, 전국과 해외를 오가며 재능기부를 하는 일은 불가능했을지도 모른다. 특히 인도차이나반도에 야구를 보급하는 일은 더욱 엄두도 내지 못했을 것이다.

권혁돈 감독은 60대 후반에 접어든 내가 지치지 않고 야구인으로서 선한 영향을 지속적으로 펼칠 수 있도록 언제나 세심하게 신경을 써준다. 내 체력 관리를 위해 일정을 조정하고, 장거리 이동 시 컨디션을 체크하며 충분한 휴식을 취할 수 있도록 배려한다. 또한, 강연이나 재능기부 활동을 원활하게 진행할 수 있도록 세부 사항을 사전에 점검하며, 모든 일정을 차질 없이 수행할 수 있도록 돕고 있다. 그의 철저한 관리와 보호 덕분에 지난 11년 동안 나는 포기하지 않고 달려올 수 있었다.

나는 나의 동역자이자 사랑하는 매니저인 권혁돈 감독이 앞으로도 더 많은 야구 꿈나무들에게 선한 영향력을 전하며, 대한민국 유소년 야구 발전에 큰 기여를 할 것이라고 확신한다. 그리고 나 역시 그의 도움을 받아 80대까지 국내외를 누비며 야구를 통해 유소년들과 야구인들, 그리고 많은 이들에게 내가 가진 지식과 경험을 나누고 싶다.

끝으로, 이번 어려운 부탁을 선뜻 받아들여 준 권혁돈 감독에게 야구인의 한 사람으로서 진심으로 감사의 마음을 전한다.

There is someone I have actively recommended while preparing for this Indonesian talent donation. It is Kwon Hyuk-don, a baseball leader with 29 years of experience and currently leading the HBC youth baseball team at Shemagidok School, and a model for many with his long experience and excellent leadership.

After graduating from Shinil Middle and High School, a prestigious baseball school in Seoul, Kwon began his leadership career there. With 29 years of coaching experience, he has the ability to effectively lead players and coaching staff. Even I, who have lived in baseball for more than 50 years, admired his systematic training style and passion.

He runs a customized training program for each player and systematically teaches from basic to advanced skills. In particular, through repetitive funkgo training, players' reflexes and defensive abilities are maximized, and in batting training, players can maximize their strengths through individual batting analysis. This detailed approach makes his leadership stand out even more. In particular, his ability to guide a wide range of age groups, from youth to middle, high school, and college students, is remarkable.

Kwon Hyuk-don is already a well-known figure among Korean baseball leaders. Despite his young age, he still hits the pengo himself on the field and teaches passionately to young players. Not only that, but his throwing of the B.P. ball for over an hour is impressive.

Above all, Kwon Hyuk-don covers his players with love and guides young players like children with the heart of an uncle. I think this attitude is an important virtue that all leaders beyond sports should emulate.

Youth baseball continues to be so busy that national competitions are held every month. Knowing this better than anyone else, I had no choice but to ask coach Kwon Hyuk-don too much as a senior baseball player. In particular, as the Indonesian Baseball Association directly requested the Hulk Foundation, it will be a good opportunity to promote the status of Korean baseball if Kwon Hyuk-don teaches Indonesian youth and national team players in their infancy. 

In fact, my relationship with Kwon Hyuk-don has been a long one. The first place I left my talent donation after finishing my leadership career with the SK Wyverns in 2014 was Mungyeong Global Advancement School, which was coached by Kwon Hyuk-don. We built a relationship there for 10 days, and 11 years have already passed.

Even now, he volunteers with me and helps me sincerely whenever he has time. And despite being busy with his managerial work, manager Kwon Hyuk-don became my manager. He thoroughly manages all schedules, including talent donation, lectures, church testimony, and important meetings. Without him, it would have been impossible to donate talent across the country and abroad. In particular, distributing baseball to the Indochina Peninsula would not have been even more difficult.

Coach Kwon Hyuk-don always takes great care of me in my late 60s so that I can continue to have a good influence as a baseball player without getting tired. I adjust my schedule to manage my physical strength, check my condition when traveling long distances, and take sufficient rest. In addition, I check the details in advance to facilitate lectures and talent donation activities, and help me carry out all schedules smoothly. Thanks to his thorough management and protection, I have been able to run without giving up for the past 11 years.

I am confident that my partner and beloved manager, Kwon Hyuk-don, will continue to have a good influence on more aspiring baseball players and contribute greatly to the development of youth baseball in Korea. And with his help, I also want to travel around Korea until my 80s at home and abroad to share my knowledge and experience with young people, baseball players, and many others through baseball.
