<기회는 기다리는 것이 아니라 만드는 것이다>

나는 ‘준비된 자만이 기회를 잡을 수 있다’는 말을 좋아한다. 하지만 살아오며 절실히 느낀 것이 있다. 기회는 기다리는 것이 아니라, 내가 만들어야 한다는 것. 기회를 붙잡기 위해선 철저한 준비가 필요하다. 하지만 아무리 준비가 되어 있어도, 스스로 움직이지 않으면 기회는 결코 오지 않는다. 기회는 찾아오는 것이 아니라, 다가가 쟁취하는 것이다.

나는 올해로 야구 인생 55년째다. 남들보다 늦게 야구를 시작했기에 주전이 되기 위해 남들보다 더 많은 연습과 노력을 해야 했다. 물론 모든 선수들이 연습하고 땀을 흘린다. 하지만 중요한 건 “기회를 잡기 위해 얼마나, 어떻게 노력했는가”다. 누구나 “열심히 했다”고 말할 수 있다. 하지만 연습은 자신을 속이지 않는다. 주위 사람들의 눈을 잠시 속일 순 있어도, 실력은 절대 거짓말을 하지 않는다. 젊은 선수들이 이 점을 잊지 않기를 바란다.

성공을 위한 연습은 단기간이 아니라, 장기적인 계획과 목표 아래 이루어져야 한다. 나는 지금까지 인생의 세 시점에서 10년 단위의 큰 계획을 세우고 달려왔다.
첫 번째는 중학교 시절, 야구를 시작하면서 스스로에게 맹세했다. “무슨 일이 있어도 중도에 포기하지 않겠다.”

두 번째는 미국으로 건너가 또 다른 10년을 내다보며 도전했다. 새로운 환경, 언어, 문화 속에서도 야구 하나만 보고 버텼다.

세 번째는 한국으로 돌아와 다시 10년을 계획하며 그라운드에 들어갔다. 그 시간들은 모두 쉽지 않았지만, 내가 스스로 만든 기회들이었다.

그리고 지금은 아마도 내 인생의 마지막 고지를 향해 가고 있다.
SK 와이번스 감독직을 마치고, 야구 불모지였던 라오스로 향했다. 20년을 내다본 새로운 도전이다. 처음 라오스 땅을 밟았을 때, 모든 것이 막막했다. 언어도, 문화도, 인프라도 아무것도 준비되어 있지 않았다. 모두가 “불가능하다”고 말했지만, 나는 한 걸음씩 나아갔다. 야구 하나로.

그렇게 11년. 이제는 나 자신에게 말할 수 있다. “나는 불가능하다고 여긴 곳에서, 기회를 만들어냈다.” 나는 지금도 도전 중이다. ‘준비된 자에게 기회가 온다’는 말은 맞지만, 그보다 더 중요한 건, 내가 기회를 만들어야 한다는 마음가짐이다. 수많은 시행착오 속에서도 나는 스스로의 길을 개척해 왔다. 기회는 철저한 준비 위에 만들어진다.

그러나 기회를 실제로 잡는 건, 움직이는 자, 도전하는 자, 두려워하지 않는 자의 몫이다. 인생도 마찬가지다. 누군가 만들어주는 삶이 아니라, 스스로 개척해야 하는 여정이다. 준비하며 기다리는 것도 중요하지만, 움직이며 기회를 만드는 것. 그것이 진짜 성공의 시작이다.


 <Opportunity is not about waiting, but about making>

I like the saying, "Only those who are ready can get a chance." But there is something I have desperately felt in my life. Opportunities are not about waiting, but about having to create them. To seize opportunities requires thorough preparation. But no matter how prepared you are, opportunities will never come unless you move yourself. Opportunities do not come, but approach and win.

This is my 55th year in baseball. I started playing baseball later than others, so I had to practice and put in more effort than others to become a starting player. Of course, all players practice and sweat. But what matters is how much and how much you tried to seize your opportunity. Anyone can say "I worked hard." But practice does not deceive oneself. Even if you can deceive others for a while, your skills never lie. I hope young players don't forget that.

Practice for success should be done under long-term plans and goals, not short-term. I have made big plans for 10 years at three points in my life so far.

The first time was when I was in middle school, I swore to myself when I started playing baseball. "No matter what, I will not give up in the middle."

Secondly, I went to the U.S. and challenged myself, looking ahead to another decade. Despite the new environment, language, and culture, I endured just watching baseball.

Third, I returned to Korea and entered the ground with a 10-year plan. All of those times were not easy, but they were opportunities I made myself.

And now I'm probably heading towards the end of my life.After finishing his job as manager of the SK Wyverns, he headed to Laos, a barren place for baseball. It's a new challenge that looks 20 years ahead. When I first stepped on Laos, everything was at a loss. There was no language, culture, or infrastructure in place. Everyone said, "It's impossible," but I took it step by step. With just one baseball.

Eleven years ago. Now I can tell myself, "I created opportunities where I thought it was impossible." I am still trying. "Those who are prepared will have opportunities" is true, but more importantly, I have the mindset that I must create opportunities. Despite countless trials and errors, I have paved my own way. Opportunities are built on thorough preparation.

But it's up to the mover, the challenger, and the unafraid to actually seize the opportunity. The same goes for life. It's not the life someone creates, it's the journey you have to pioneer yourself. It's important to prepare and wait, but to move and create opportunities. That's the real beginning of success.
