< 한국 프로야구의 첫 걸음, 그 헌신의 기억 >

1982년 우리나라 프로야구가 출범하던 시절은 말 그대로 암울한 시대였다.
내 대학 시절은 1978년이었는데, 그렇게 해보고 싶었던 대학 축제조차 한 번도 경험하지 못하고 졸업했다. 1980년 5월 광주에서 일어난 민주화 운동, 이른바 ‘5·18 광주민주화운동’은 시대의 어두운 단면을 보여주었다.

그런 가운데 전혀 예상치 못했던 일이 벌어졌다. 1982년, 대한민국에서 프로야구가 탄생한 것이다. 그전까지 국민 스포츠는 단연 고교야구였다. 고교야구 전국대회가 열리면 동문들이 만사를 제쳐두고 야구장으로 향하던 시절이었다. 이를 잘 알고 있던 정부는 국민들의 시선을 돌리고자 프로야구를 출범시켰다. 결과는 대성공이었다.

이 대업의 중심에는 대한민국 프로야구 초대 사무총장 고(故) 이용일 선생이 계셨다.

나는 재능기부와 여러 활동으로 해외와 전국을 오가며 분주히 지내다 보니, 지난 8일 아침 중앙일보 고봉준 기자에게 충격적인 전화를 받았다.
“감독님, 혹시 이용일 사무총장님께서 어제 돌아가신 것 알고 계십니까?”
너무 놀라 아무 말도 할 수 없었다. 그때까지도 뉴스에는 아무 소식이 없었고, 방금 기사화 되었다는 말을 듣고서야 비보를 알게 되었다.

이용일 사무총장님은 1931년생으로 경동고와 서울대 상대를 졸업하셨다. 1981년, 신군부의 요청을 받아 서울대 동문 이호헌 초대 사무차장과 함께 프로야구 태동을 주도하셨다. 이상주 청와대 교육문화수석, 박영길 롯데 실업야구단 감독, 일본프로야구에서 뛰던 장훈 선수 등과 함께 머리를 맞대어 6개 구단 체제의 청사진을 그리셨다. 이것이 바로 오늘날 10개 구단 KBO리그의 출발점이었다.

1982년 프로야구 출범 당시, 사무총장님은 생업을 뒤로하고 거의 야구장에서 살다시피 하셨다. 오늘날 KBO가 1,000만 관중 시대를 열 수 있었던 것도, 바로 그분의 헌신과 희생 덕분이었다.

개인적으로도 인연이 깊었다. 1982년 10월 16일, 내 결혼식에서 직접 주례를 서주셨고, 결혼 후에도 집에 찾아뵐 때마다 반갑게 맞아주시며 선수로서의 자세와 한국 야구의 미래에 대해 많은 조언을 아끼지 않으셨다. 고인의 부친 성함이 나와 같았던 것도 인연을 더욱 각별하게 했다.

이용일 사무총장님은 언제나 아버지처럼 야구인들을 품어주신 큰 어른이었다.
“사회적으로 암울하고 힘든 시기임에도 불구하고, 프로야구 출범을 위해 온 힘을 다하셨던 분. 오늘날 KBO리그의 위대한 일꾼이셨다.”

비록 이제는 하늘나라로 가셨지만, 그곳에서도 여전히 야구를 즐기고 계시리라 믿는다.

“우리가 오늘 누리는 한국 프로야구의 영광은, 앞서 간 이들의 눈물과 헌신 위에 세워진 기적이다.”

The days when Korean professional baseball was launched in 1982 were literally dark times.My college years were in 1978, but I graduated without even experiencing the college festival I wanted to do so. The so-called 'May 18 Gwangju Democratic Uprising', the democratization movement that took place in Gwangju in May 1980, showed a dark side of the times.

In the meantime, something completely unexpected happened. In 1982, professional baseball was born in Korea. Until then, the national sport was by far high school baseball. It was a time when alumni left everything behind and headed to the ballpark when the national high school baseball tournament was held. The government, which was well aware of this, launched professional baseball to turn the public's attention. The result was a huge success.

At the center of this great effort was the late Lee Yong-il, the first secretary-general of Korean professional baseball.

As I was busy traveling abroad and across the country with talent donations and various activities, I received a shocking phone call from JoongAng Ilbo reporter Ko Bong-joon on the morning of the 8th."Director, did you know Secretary General Lee Yong Il passed away yesterday?"I was so surprised that I couldn't say anything. Until then, there was no news on the news, and I only got to know the sad news after hearing that it had just been published.

Lee Yong-il was born in 1931 and graduated from Kyungdong High School and Seoul National University. Upon the request of the new military, Lee Ho-hun, the first deputy secretary general of Seoul National University, led the creation of the six-club system. Lee Sang-joo, senior secretary for education and culture at the presidential office, Park Young-gil, manager of the Lotte Business Baseball Organization, and Jang Hoon, who used to play in the Japanese pro baseball league, worked together to draw a blueprint for the six-club system. This was the starting point of the 10-club KBO League today.

When professional baseball was launched in 1982, the secretary-general almost left his livelihood behind and lived in a baseball stadium. Today's KBO was able to open the era of 10 million spectators thanks to his dedication and sacrifice.

They were deeply connected in person. On October 16, 1982, he officiated at my wedding, welcomed me every time I visited home even after my marriage, and gave me many advice on my attitude as a player and the future of Korean baseball. The fact that the name of the deceased's father was the same as mine made our relationship all the more special.

Secretary-General Lee Yong-il was a big adult who always embraced baseball players like his father."Despite the dismal and challenging times socially, he did everything in his power to launch a professional baseball team. He was a great worker in the KBO league today."

Although he is now in heaven, I believe he is still enjoying baseball there.

"The glory of Korean professional baseball that we enjoy today is a miracle built on the tears and dedication of those who went ahead."
