며칠 전, 최정중 감독에게서 전화가 걸려왔다.
“감독님, 시간이 되시면 꼭 한 번 뵙고 의논드릴 이야기가 있습니다.”

최정중 감독과의 인연은 2018년, 인천동막초등학교에 재능기부를 갔을 때 시작되었다. 그때부터 이어진 인연은 지금까지 서로 안부를 나누며 이어져 왔다. 비록 후배지만, 야구에 대한 열정과 아이들을 사랑하는 마음만큼은 내가 오히려 배우는 부분이 많았다.

얼마 전 다시 연락이 왔다. 중요한 이야기가 있다며 꼭 만나 달라는 것이었다. 약속을 정해 함께 식사를 하며 이야기를 나누던 중, 최 감독은 뜻밖의 고백을 했다.

“저도 감독님처럼 야구를 위해 모험을 하고 싶습니다. 중국에 들어가 대한민국 야구를 전파하고 싶습니다.”

최정중 감독은 현재 군산남초등학교에서 지도자로서 명성을 쌓고 있는 인물이다. 성실하고 아이들을 진심으로 가르치는 지도자로 정평이 나 있다. 그런 그가 안정된 길을 두고 새로운 도전을 이야기하는 모습에 놀라면서도 진심을 느낄 수 있었다.

나는 지난 11년 동안 라오스·베트남·캄보디아·인도네시아 등 동남아 여러 나라를 다니며 야구를 전파해왔다. 그 길이 얼마나 힘든 여정이었는지 누구보다 잘 알고 있다. 처음 시작할 때는 지인들로부터 “왜 바보 같은 일을 하느냐”는 핀잔을 수도 없이 들었다. 하지만 그 길 위에서 만난 아이들의 웃음과 배움은 그 어떤 것과도 바꿀 수 없는 보람이었다.

최정중 감독의 선택 또한 다르지 않을 것이다. 재물이나 안락함이 아니라, 아이들과 미래를 위한 결단. 자신이 한 알의 밀알이 되어 중국 땅에 심어진다면 기꺼이 자신을 바치겠다는 그의 고백은 깊은 울림을 주었다.

그는 늘 강조한다.
“유소년들에게 야구는 즐거워야 합니다. 직업선수가 되는 것은 일부에 불과합니다. 나머지 아이들은 야구를 통해 더 큰 가치를 배워야 합니다. 독서, 일기, 공부, 이런 것들을 놓치지 않도록 도와야 합니다.”

나는 믿는다. 최정중 감독의 철학과 마음이라면 낯선 중국 땅에서도 곧 인정받는 훌륭한 지도자가 될 것이다. 나 역시 그가 중국에서 잘 적응할 수 있도록 한국에서 응원하고, 기회가 되면 직접 찾아가 힘을 보탤 것이다.

스포츠는 단순한 경기 이상의 의미를 지닌다. 건강한 신체, 정정당당함, 협동, 그리고 희생정신은 책으로 배울 수 없다. 운동장에서 흘린 땀으로 체득할 수 있는 값진 자산이다.

현재 최정중 감독은 중국 위해시에 있는 위해중세외국인학교에서 야구 감독을 맡고 있다. 그리고 그의 새로운 여정은 이제 막 시작되었다.

“안정된 길을 뒤로하고 새로운 길을 향해 나아간 그의 도전은, 한국 야구의 또 다른 역사를 써 내려갈 첫 걸음이 될 것이다.” ⚾????


                                            <Step Towards Unfamiliar Land, Director Choi Jung-joong's Story>

A few days ago, I got a call from director Choi Jung-joong."Director, if you have time, I'd like to meet you and discuss something."

My relationship with coach Choi Jeong-joong began in 2018 when I donated my talent to Dongmak Elementary School in Incheon. The relationship that has continued since then has continued to say hello to each other. Although I am a junior, I learned a lot about my passion for baseball and my love for children.

Not long ago, he contacted me again. He wanted to meet him because he had an important story. While talking over dinner together with an appointment, Choi made an unexpected confession.

"I want to take chances for baseball like you. I want to enter China and spread Korean baseball."

Director Choi Jung-joong is currently building a reputation as a leader at Gunsan Nam Elementary School. He has a reputation as a leader who is sincere and teaches children sincerely. I was surprised to see him talk about new challenges over a stable path and felt his sincerity.

For the past 11 years, I have been traveling to many Southeast Asian countries such as Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia to spread baseball. I know better than anyone else how difficult the road has been. When I first started, I was scolded countless times by my acquaintances, "Why are you doing such a stupid thing?" However, the laughter and learning of the children I met on the road were rewarding that could not be exchanged for anything else.

Choi's choice is no different. Not wealth or comfort, but a decision for children and the future. His confession that he is willing to give himself if he becomes a grain of wheat and is planted in Chinese soil was deeply resonant.

He always emphasizes."For boys, baseball should be fun. Becoming a professional player is only a part of it. The rest of the kids need to learn greater value through baseball. They need to help them not miss things like reading, diaries, studying, and so on."I believe so. If it is Choi`s philosophy and heart, he will soon become a great leader who is recognized even in unfamiliar Chinese lands. I will support him in Korea so that he can adapt well in China, and if possible, I will visit him in person to support him.

Sports mean more than just games. Healthy bodies, fairness, cooperation, and the spirit of sacrifice cannot be learned by books. It is a valuable asset that you can learn from the sweat you shed on the playground.

Currently, Choi is the manager of baseball at the Weihai Middle School for Foreigners in Weihai, China. And his new journey has just begun.

"His challenge, leaving a stable path behind, will be the first step in writing another history in Korean baseball." ⚾????
