드디어 우리나라에도 지난 9월 16일 부산 기장에서 ’한국야구명예의전당 야구박물관‘의 착공식이 열렸다. 이날 나는 인천에서 부산 기장까지 달려가 한국 야구 역사에 남을 자리에 참석했다.

한국야구명예의전당 박물관은 한국야구 120년 역사의 발자취를 기념하고 미래 세대에게 한국야구의 정신과 가치를 전해주기 위해 추진된 역사적 사업이다. 한국야구명예의전당은 한국야구를 대표하는 상징적 공간으로 야구의 역사와 기록을 보존 및 계승하는 한편, 관광 및 지역 경제 활성화에도 크게 기여할 것으로 기대한다. 야구인으로서 이날 한국야구명예의전당이 한국야구 100년의 미래를 열어가는 출발점이 되리라 본다.

미국 뉴욕주에 있는 ‘쿠퍼스 타운 명예의 전당'은 나에게 특별한 인연이 있는 곳이다. 야구인으로서 꿈에만 그리던 명예의 전당을 구경하는 것이 나의 꿈이기도 했다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 코치로 활동하던 시절, 2002년도에 쿠퍼스 타운에서 콜로라도 로키스 팀과의 친선 경기가 있었다.

이 날은 정식 경기라기 보다는 팬들을 위한 친선 경기로, 시카고 화이트 삭스와 콜로라도 로키스 팀과의 경기는 매년 각팀마다 돌아가며 친선경기와 홈런 레이스를 펼친다. 이 날 경기는 내가 한국 대표로 홈런 레이스에 출전하게 되었다.

팀 당 세 명씩 나와 홈런 레이스 경기를 하는데, 우리 팀이 4개 차이로 졌다. 이 홈런 레이스는 10아웃까지 치는 경기다. 파울 볼이나 홈런이 아닌 경우 아웃 처리가 되는 이 경기에서, 아웃이 되기 전까지 홈런을 12개 쳤던 기억이 있다.

지금도 잊혀지지 않는 비하인드가 있다면, 몇 년 동안 타격을 연습하지 않았는데 갑자기 시카고 화이트 삭스의 감독인 제리 메뉴얼이 '이만수가 홈런 레이스에 참가하라'고 지시한 것이다. 이날 스파이크도 없이 운동화를 신은 채로 선수들과 함께 홈런 레이스에 참가했다.

언급했듯 10개의 아웃카운트 안에 12개의 홈런을 치며 양팀 통틀어 네 번째로 많은 홈런을 쳤다. 친선 경기를 마치고 쿠퍼스에 세워진 명예의전당을 구경하며 우리나라에도 언젠가는 메이저리그처럼 '명예의전당'이 세워지기를 꿈꾸어 보았던 기억이 생생하다.

쿠퍼스타운은 도시 전체가 야구를 위해 설계되어 다른 도시에서는 볼 수 없는 독특한 형태로 구성되어 있다. 야구를 좋아하는 미국인이라면 죽기 전에 꼭 한번 가보고 싶은 도시로 꼽는 곳이 바로 '쿠퍼스타운'이다. 미국인이라면 누구나 좋아하는 야구를 위해 구성된, 그리고 '명예의전당'이 있는 쿠퍼스타운을 동경하고, 가고 싶어 한다.

나는 한국의 야구인으로서 젊은 시절부터 꿈 꿔온 것이 있다. 한국에 ‘한국야구명예의전당(야구박물관)‘이 생기기를 고대해 왔다. 그러던 중 지난 16일 부산 기장군 일광읍 일광유원지 부지에서 착공식이 개최된다는 소식을 듣고 방문한 것이다. 이날 착공식에는 KBO 허구연 총재, 박형준 부산시장, 정종복 기장군수, 박홍복 기장군의회의장, 양해영 대한야구소프트볼협회 회장, 그리고 박철순, 이만수, 장종훈, 윤학길 등 KBO의 레전드들이 참석해 시삽을 함께하며 착공식을 했다.

이날 축사 중에 허구연 KBO 총재는 “정말로 남다른 감회가 있는 것 같다. KBO, 부산시, 기장군의 숙제로 남아있었다. 15년 동안 쭉 지켜봤지만 어떻게 될 것인지 걱정도 많았다”면서 “하지만 끝내 착공식을 하게 됐고, 준공이 되면 이게 얼마나 큰 자산이고 가치있는 공간이 될 지 부산시장님과 기장군수님께 말씀을 드렸다”고 전했다.

그러면서 “메이저리그도 1년 중 가장 큰 행사가 명예의전당 헌액식이다. 전국의 주목을 받는다. 국내도 이제 그렇게 되지 않을까 생각한다. 한국 프로스포츠에서 명예의전당을 만드는 것이 야구가 처음이기에 부산시와 기장군이 많은 주목을 받을 것이다”라며 “오늘은 한국야구 120년 역사를 기리고 미래를 향해 나아가는 뜻깊은 자리다. 또한 단순한 박물관이 아닌 한국야구의 발자취와 영광을 후세에 전하는, 살아있는 역사의 자리다. 박형준 부산시장님, 정종복 기장군수님의 야구에 대한 남다른 열정과 헌신이 있었기에 오늘 자리가 가능했다. 시장님과 군수님께 감사 말씀을 드리고 또 KBO리그의 든든한 동반자인 야구팬들에게도 감사를 전한다”고 말했다.

아울러 “팬 여러분의 사랑과 응원이 있었기에 KBO가 지금까지 발전할 수 있었고, 앞으로 더욱 성장해 나갈 것이다. 한국야구명예의전당, 야구박물관이 한국 야구의 역사를 담는 메카로 자리매김하도록 최선을 다하겠다”고 강조했다.

나는 허구연 총재가 축사하며 했던 이야기가 거짓이 아님을 쿠퍼스 타운에 세워져 있는 '명예의전당'을 직접 보며 확신한다. 이들은 근시안적으로 사물을 보며 판단하지 않는다. 이들은 이미 알고 있었던 것이다. 뉴욕주에서도 가장 작은 도시인 쿠퍼스타운은 명예의전당이 세워지기까지 누구도 모르던 도시였다. 그러나 100년이 지난 지금은 미국 국민들이 가장 가고 싶어하는 도시 중에 하나가 되었다.

비록 한국야구명예의전당 야구박물관을 착공하기까지 수많은 어려움이 있었고 왜 굳이 많은 경비를 들여 야구 박물관을 세워야 하느냐?며 반대도 많았던 것으로 기억하고 있다. 그러나 국내 유일의 명예의 전당이자 야구 박물관이 완공되면 야구의 역사와 문화를 보존 및 계승하고, 더 풍성히 하는데 이바지하는 모습을 보며 그 존재 가치에 공감하게 될 것이다. 우리나라뿐만 아니라 야구를 좋아하는 외국의 선수들과 팬들까지 한번 즈음 꼭 가보고 싶은 도시로 자리 매김할 것으로 나는 확신한다.

Finally, the groundbreaking ceremony of the "Korea Baseball Hall of Fame Baseball Museum" was held in Gijang, Busan, on September 16. On this day, I ran from Incheon to Gijang, Busan, and attended a place that will remain in Korean baseball history.

The Korea Baseball Hall of Fame Museum is a historical project that was promoted to commemorate the footsteps of the 120-year history of Korean baseball and to convey the spirit and value of Korean baseball to future generations. The Korea Baseball Hall of Fame is a symbolic space representing Korean baseball, and it is expected to preserve and inherit the history and records of baseball, while greatly contributing to the revitalization of tourism and the local economy. As a baseball player, I believe that the Korea Baseball Hall of Fame will be the starting point for opening the future of the 100th year of Korean baseball.

The Coopers Town Hall of Fame in New York State has a special connection to me. As a baseball player, it was also my dream to visit the Hall of Fame. While coaching the Chicago White Sox, there was a friendly game against the Colorado Rockies in Coopers Town in 2002.

Rather than an official game, the game is a friendly match for fans, and each team plays the Chicago White Sox and the Colorado Rockies annually for friendly matches and home run races. I participated in the home run race for the Korean national team in this game.

Three players per team play a home run race, and our team lost by four. This home run race is a game where you can hit up to 10 outs. I remember hitting 12 home runs before I was out in this game where it was ruled out if it was not a foul ball or a home run.

If there is an unforgettable behind-the-scenes story, the Chicago White Sox manager Jerry Manual suddenly instructed Lee Man-soo to participate in the home run race after not practicing batting for several years. He participated in the home run race with the players while wearing sneakers without a spike.

As mentioned, he hit 12 home runs within 10 out-counts, the fourth-most by both teams. After the friendly match, I remember watching the Hall of Fame set up in the Coopers and dreaming of establishing a "Honorary Hall" like Major League someday in Korea.

The entire city is designed for baseball and consists of a unique form that is not seen in other cities. If you are an American who loves baseball, Cooperstown is one of the cities you want to visit before you die. All Americans long for and want to go to Cooperstown, which is built for their favorite baseball and where the Hall of Fame is located.

As a Korean baseball player, I have dreamed of something since I was young. I have been looking forward to the establishment of the Korea Baseball Hall of Fame (Baseball Museum) in Korea. Then, I visited after hearing that the groundbreaking ceremony would be held at the site of Ilgwang Amusement Park in Ilgwang-eup, Gijang-gun, Busan on the 16th. At the groundbreaking ceremony on this day, KBO legends such as KBO President Heo Gu-yeon, Busan Mayor Park Hyung-joon, Gijang-gun County Mayor Chung Jong-bok, Gijang-gun County Council Chairman Park Hong-bok, Korea Baseball Softball Association Chairman Yang Hae-young, and KBO legends such as Park Chul-soon, Lee Man-soo, Jang Jong-hoon and Yoon Hak-gil attended the groundbreaking ceremony.

During the congratulatory speech, KBO President Koo Hu-yeon said, "I think there is a really special feeling. It remained the homework of KBO, Busan City, and Gijang-gun." I've been watching for 15 years, but I was also worried about what would happen, he said. "But we finally started the groundbreaking ceremony, and I told the mayor of Busan and the governor of Gijang how big an asset and a valuable space it would be when it was completed."

"The biggest event of the year in Major League Baseball is the induction ceremony of the Hall of Fame. It is attracting attention from all over the country. I think it will be the same in Korea now. Since baseball is the first time to build a Hall of Fame in Korean professional sports, Busan City and Gijang County will receive a lot of attention," he said. "Today is a meaningful place to honor the 120-year history of Korean baseball and move toward the future. It is also a place of living history that conveys the footsteps and glory of Korean baseball to future generations, not just a museum. Busan Mayor Park Hyung-joon and Gijang County Governor Jeong Jong-bok's extraordinary enthusiasm and dedication for baseball made today possible. I would like to thank the mayor and the county governor, and also thank baseball fans who are strong partners in the KBO League."

In addition, "Because of the love and support of the fans, KBO has been able to develop so far and will grow further in the future. We will do our best to establish the Korea Baseball Hall of Fame and the Baseball Museum as a mecca for the history of Korean baseball," he stressed.

I am convinced by looking directly at the 'Honorary Hall of Fame' in Cooperstown that the story President Hu Jie-yeon gave while congratulating is not false. They do not judge by looking at things in shortsightedness. They already knew. Cooperstown, the smallest city in New York State, was a city no one knew until the Hall of Fame was established. However, 100 years later, it has become one of the cities that the American people most want to go to.

Although there were many difficulties before the start of the construction of the Baseball Museum of the Korea Baseball Hall of Fame, I remember that there were many objections, asking why the baseball museum should be built with a lot of money. However, when the baseball museum, the only hall of fame in Korea, is completed, you will sympathize with the value of its existence by seeing it contribute to preserving, inheriting, and enriching the history and culture of baseball. I am sure that not only Korea but also foreign players and fans who like baseball will become a city I really want to visit around the time.
