< 위대한 사람은 스스로 만들어 간다 >

이른 새벽에 한장의 사진을 보며 시간 여행을 할 수 있어 나도 모르게 입가에 미소를 뛰우며 옛 추억에 잠긴다. 나이가 들어가면서 추억의 공간들을 많이 갖고 있어 늘 감사한 마음이다.

지금도 나는 나이가 많이 들어감에도 불구하고 여전히 젊은 청춘처럼 해외와 국내로 다니면서 야구를 보급하고 어린 청소년들에게 야구를 가르쳐 주고 재능기부 할 수 있어 늘 감사한 마음이다. 젊은 시절에 수많은 사람들과 만남을 가졌고 그들로 인해 또다른 세상과 문화를 알아가는 것... 또 난생 처음 가보는 오지로 달려가 난생 처음 해보는 야구를 전수하고 그들과 함께 할 수 있어 감사하다.

누가 이야기 했던가 시간이 아무리 많이 흘러도 우리들의 기억 속에 남아 있는 과거와 추억들은 영원히 잊을 수 없고 또 때로는 지나간 시간들로 인해 우리들의 삶을 더 윤택하게 만들어 줌을 우리는 많이 경험하게 된다.

이전에는 전혀 깨닫지 못했고 전혀 경험해 보지 못한 일이지만 결국 우리들에게 특별한 삶이 되었고 또 우리들에게 특별한 순간들로 자리 잡아가고 있다. 과거가 있었기에 오늘날 내가 있게 되었다. 과거와 현재 그리고 미래를 살아가는 우리들의 인생에서 과거는 다 나쁜것만 있는 것이 아니라 좋은 것이나 나쁜 것이나 우리가 이 세상을 살아가는데 있어 우리들의 삶에서 얼마나 소중하고 귀중한 추억이고 또 우리를 다시 되돌아 볼 수 있는 공간들이 되고 있어 우리는 매 순간마다 소중한 시간들을 보내고 있다.

오늘은 지나온 나의 시간 속에서 추억의 사진을 한장 꺼내 본다.

짐 토미는 클리블랜드 인디언스의 1루수로 23시즌을 뛰었다. 그의 메이저리그 홈런은 미국 역대 612개로 8번째로 많이 친 선수다. 짐 토미는 2018년부터 명예의전당 후보에 올라 명예의전당 기자단 1차 투표에서 89.81%라는 어마어마한 득표를 찾이해 명예의 전당에 들어가게 되었다.

그리고 짐 토미의 등번호 25번은 클리블랜드 인디언스에서 영구 결번으로 지정되었다. 그런 훌륭하고 위대한 짐 토미 선수가 2003년부터 2005년까지 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 함께 야구했다.

짐 토미의 수상 기록은 다 열거할 수 없을 정도로 어마어마할 정도다. 그의 가장 위대한 업적은 머니머니 해도 2018년도에 명예의전당에 헌액한 일이다. 그와 함께 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 3년 동안 함께 생활하며 짐의 인간성과 그의 야구에 대한 열정을 자연스럽게 옆에서 보게 되었다.

누구를 지칭해 그 사람을 평가하는 일 만큼 조심스러운 일은 없다. 그러나 짐 토미에 대해 이야기하는 것은 그의 인품이나 야구에 대한 열정 그리고 그의 인간미다. 언제나 그는 타의 모범이 되는 선수였고 무엇보다 동료들이나 프런트 그리고 팬들이 그를 좋아한다는 사실이다.

동양인인 나를 코치라며 얼마나 깍듯이 잘해주고 존중하는지 내가 다 미안할 정도다. 그런 위대하고 훌륭한 선수와 3년 동안 함께 야구했다는 것 또한 나에게 엄청난 행운이고 보람된 시간들이다.

  < Great People Forge Their Own Paths >

Early in the morning, looking at a single photograph, I find myself traveling through time. Unconsciously, a smile plays on my lips as I sink into old memories. As I grow older, I am always grateful to have so many spaces filled with cherished memories.

Even now, despite my advancing years, I remain grateful that I can still travel abroad and domestically like a young man, promoting baseball, teaching it to young people, and sharing my talents. In my youth, I met countless people, and through them, I discovered new worlds and cultures... I am also thankful that I can rush to remote areas I've never been to before, teach baseball for the first time, and share those moments with them.

Who said it? No matter how much time passes, the past and memories that remain in our hearts are forever unforgettable. We often find that the time that has passed enriches our lives.

Though I never realized it before and had never experienced it, it ultimately became a special life for us and is settling into special moments for us. Because of the past, I am here today. In our lives, navigating past, present, and future, the past isn't solely filled with bad things. Both the good and the bad become precious, invaluable memories in our journey through this world, spaces that allow us to reflect. We spend every moment cherishing these precious times.

Today, I pull out a photo from my past memories.

Jim Thome played 23 seasons as the first baseman for the Cleveland Indians. His 612 Major League home runs rank him eighth all-time in US baseball history. Jim Thome became eligible for the Hall of Fame in 2018 and was elected with an overwhelming 89.81% of the vote in the first ballot by the Hall of Fame voters.

Furthermore, Jim Thome's jersey number 25 was retired by the Cleveland Indians. That outstanding and great player, Jim Thome, played baseball with the Chicago White Sox from 2003 to 2005.

Jim Thome's list of awards is so extensive it's impossible to list them all. His greatest achievement, by far, was being inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018. Living alongside him for three years with the Chicago White Sox, I naturally witnessed Jim's humanity and his passion for baseball up close.

Nothing is more delicate than evaluating a person. Yet, when speaking of Jim Thome, it's his character, his passion for the game, and his humanity that stand out. He was always a model player, and above all, he was beloved by his teammates, the front office, and the fans.

As an Asian, I felt almost apologetic at how respectfully and courteously he treated me as a coach. Getting to play baseball alongside such a great and outstanding player for three years was also an immense stroke of luck and a deeply rewarding time for me.

In the early hours of the morning, I gaze at Jim Tommy's photo, recalling the memories we shared over the years, and I find myself lost in nostalgia.
