< 야구라는 길이 놓는 미래의 주춧돌 >

지난 11일, 강원도 홍천에 다녀온 뒤 많은 생각에 잠겼다. 평생 한길만 달려온 것이 어느새 55년, 야구인의 한 사람으로서 후배들과 자라나는 어린 선수들에게 조금이나마 보탬이 될 수 있다는 뿌듯함에, 그날 하루는 말로 다 할 수 없는 감격으로 가득했다.

이번 만남의 시작은 현 서울학동초등학교 감독이자 헐크파운데이션의 박상수 감독이 “홍천에서 유소년 야구대회를 열어주면 좋겠다”는 제안을 한 데서 비롯됐다. 뜻을 실현하기 위해 전국 각지에서 스텝진들이 모였고, 우리는 홍천군 체육회장을 직접 찾았다.

헐크파운데이션은 매년 국내는 물론 해외에서도 청소년과 청년들에게 야구를 통한 꿈과 희망을 전하고 있다. 올해만 해도 인도네시아, 베트남에서 활발히 활동 중이다. 모든 스텝진은 자원봉사자로 헌신하며, 이번에도 유소년을 위해 일정을 비우고 먼 길을 달려왔다.

홍천군은 시설이 훌륭하다. 성인용 구장 2면과 리틀야구장 1면, 거대한 실내야구장, 최신식 전광판과 야간조명, 이동식 펜스, 안전을 위한 높은 외야 펜스까지 갖췄다. 유소년이 훈련·경기하기에 최적의 환경이다. 다만 관람석이 부족한 점은 앞으로 보완할 필요가 있다.

박상수 감독은 1993년 쌍방울 레이더스 1차 지명으로 입단할 만큼 촉망받던 선수였다. 그러나 부상으로 일찍 은퇴했고, 이후 지도자의 길을 걸었다. 특히 충주성심학교 청각장애인 야구부를 지도하며 큰 감동을 전했고, 이 이야기는 영화 **‘글러브’**로도 제작돼 많은 이들에게 울림을 주었다.

그는 현 서울학동초등학교 감독으로 부임한 후에도, 성적보다 인성과 기본기를 우선으로 가르친다. 협동심, 희생, 예의, 배려, 인내—야구를 통해 배우는 이 가치들이야말로 아이들이 중학교, 고등학교, 그리고 인생에서 어떤 어려움에도 포기하지 않게 만드는 힘이라고 믿는다.

어두운 세상 속에서도 자신을 아끼지 않고 후대를 위해 헌신하는 박상수 감독 덕분에, 세상이 다시 희망의 빛으로 환하게 비춰지는 것 같다.

결국, 우리가 걸어야 할 길은 나를 위한 길이 아니라 후대를 위한 길이다.


 < The Cornerstone of the Future Laid by the Path of Baseball >

After visiting Hongcheon, Gangwon Province on the 11th, I found myself deep in thought. Having dedicated my entire life to a single path for 55 years now, I felt immense pride as a baseball man knowing I could contribute even a little to the next generation and young players growing up. That day was filled with an indescribable sense of fulfillment.

This gathering began with a proposal from Coach Park Sang-soo, currently the head coach at Seoul Hakdong Elementary School and also with the Hulk Foundation: “It would be great to hold a youth baseball tournament in Hongcheon.” To make this vision a reality, staff members gathered from across the country, and we visited the Hongcheon County Sports Council directly.

The Hulk Foundation annually delivers dreams and hope through baseball to youth and young adults both domestically and internationally. This year alone, it is actively engaged in Indonesia and Vietnam. All staff members dedicate themselves as volunteers, and this time too, they cleared their schedules and traveled long distances for the youth.

Hongcheon County boasts excellent facilities. It features two adult-sized fields, one Little League field, a massive indoor baseball facility, state-of-the-art scoreboards and night lighting, movable fences, and tall outfield fences for safety. It's an optimal environment for youth training and games. However, the lack of spectator seating is an area needing improvement in the future.

Manager Park Sang-soo was a highly promising player, drafted first overall by the Ssangbangwool Raiders in 1993. However, injuries forced his early retirement, after which he pursued a coaching career. He particularly moved many while coaching the baseball team for the hearing-impaired at Chungju Seongsim School; this story was even made into the movie **‘Glove’**, resonating deeply with audiences.

Even after taking the helm at Seoul Hakdong Elementary School, he prioritizes character and fundamentals over results. Teamwork, sacrifice, courtesy, consideration, patience—he believes these values learned through baseball are the very strength that prevents children from giving up in the face of any hardship in middle school, high school, and life.

Thanks to Coach Park Sang-soo, who spares no effort in dedicating himself to future generations even in a dark world, it seems the world is once again brightly illuminated by the light of hope.

Ultimately, the path we must walk is not for ourselves, but for future generations.
