자기 개발을 위해서는 스스로 끊임없이 연구하고 공부해야 한다. 그렇지 아니하면 어떻게 연구하고 공부해야 할지 잘 모를 수 있다. 왜냐하면 우리나라 스포츠에 관한 교육 자체가 스스로 하는 것이 아니라 주입식 교육이 아직 남아 있기 때문일 수 있다. 지금까지 우리는 스스로 연구하고 공부하는 자세가 되어 있지 않다보니 지도자가 일일이 선수들을 기계처럼 끼워 맞추고 있다.

앞에서도 이야기 했지만 자기 개발을 위해 끊임 없이 연구하고 공부해야 한다. 지도자는 선수 스스로 연구하고 개발할 수 있도록 터를 만들고 지혜가 있어야 한다. 그렇게 할 때 비록 어린선수들이 가끔은 더디게 갈지 모르지만 먼 훗날 놀라운 발전과 함께 성장한다는 것을 잊어서는 안 된다.

지금도 나의 뇌리에서 잊혀지지 않는 것이 있다. 삼성라이온즈 팀에서 16년 동안 프로야구 선수생활을 마감하고 1998년도에 선진야구를 배우기 위해 홀로 미국으로 들어갔다. 평생 야구하면서 본대로 선수생활 하면서 늘 지도자들이나 선배들에게 들었던 대로 미국에 들어가 마이너리그 선수들에게 그대로 가르쳤더니 한번은 마이너리그 감독들이 조용히 나에게 다가오더니 이런 말을 하는 것이다.

“앞으로 어린선수들에게 절대 지적하거나 잘못된 부분에 대해 흉내 내지 말라”는 것이다. '한번만 더 어린선수들에게 지적하거나 흉내 내면 한국으로 보내겠다'는 것이다. 미국인 감독한테 이런 지적을 받고 긴장했던 기억이 있다.

그러면서 또다시 이런 말을 하는 것이다. “앞으로 어린선수들의 장점만 보라”는 것이다. 한국 야구에 젖어 있던 나는 이들의 시스템을 전혀 몰랐던 것이다. 나 또한 루키 선수들과 별 다름이 없었다. 41살부터 지도자를 처음 시작했기 때문에 나 또한 백지에서 다시 하나부터 이들의 선진야구를 배워야 했다.

55년의 선수생활과 지도자생활 하면서 나를 한단계 더 업그레이드 하게 만들었던 계기가 바로 미국에서의 지도자생활 10년이었다. 이 시절이 없었다면 나는 여전히 한국적인 틀에 갖혀 지금도 옛날 야구를 고집하며 어린선수들을 가르쳐 주고 조언해 주었을 것이다.

현장을 떠난지 오래 되었지만 나는 지금도 끊임없이 야구를 위해 공부하고 있다. 나 스스로 공부하지 않으면 앞서가는 야구에서 도태 될 수 있기 때문에 나의 삶이 다하는 그날까지 나 자신을 위해 끊임 없이 연구하고 공부할 것이다.


            <Self-development>

For self-development, you have to constantly research and study yourself. Otherwise, you may not know how to study and study. This may be because education on sports in Korea itself is not done by itself, but cramming education is still available. Until now, we are not in a position to study and study by ourselves, so the leaders fit the players one by one like machines.

As I mentioned earlier, you have to constantly research and study for your own development. Leaders must have the wisdom to build a foundation and develop their own research and development. In doing so, it should not be forgotten that young players grow with amazing development in the distant future, although they may sometimes go slow.

There is something that I still can't forget in my mind. After 16 years as a professional baseball player with the Samsung Lions, I went to the U.S. alone in 1998 to learn advanced baseball. Throughout my life as a baseball player, I went to the U.S. as I've always heard from leaders and seniors and taught minor league players, and once minor league managers quietly approached me and said this.

"Don't point fingers at younger players or mimic others' mistakes from now on." He said, "If I point fingers at younger players or mimic them, I will send them to Korea." I remember getting nervous after being criticized by an American coach.

Then I'm saying this again. "Look only at the strengths of young players in the future." I was so immersed in Korean baseball that I had no idea about their system. I was no different from rookie players. I started as a leader at 41, so I also had to learn their advanced baseball from scratch.

It was 10 years of leadership in the United States that made me upgrade to the next level during my 55 years of career and leadership. Without these days, I would still have been stuck in a Korean framework and still insist on old baseball and teach and advise young players.

It's been a long time since I left the field, but I'm still constantly studying for baseball. If I don't study on my own, I can be eliminated from baseball that is ahead of me, so I will constantly study and study for myself until the day my life ends.
