< 더 넓게 더 멀리 >

3월 2일 이른 새벽시간에 사우나 하기 위해 밑으로 내려갔다. 평생 이른 새벽에 일어나는 습관으로 인해 나이가 들어서도 자연스럽게 새벽 5시에는 일어난다. 오늘도 평소와 똑 같이 이른 새벽시간에 사우나 멤버들과 함께 사우나 하는데 김노중 대표가 나에게 다가오더니 '감독님 좋은 일 하시는데 조금이나마 저가 도움이 되었으면 좋겠습니다.'라며 '헐크파운데이션' 재단통장번호를 알려 달라는 것이다.

새로 이사온지 어느덧 3년이 조금 넘었다. 동네 이웃과 함께 많은 일을 하면서도 지금까지 한번도 “헐크파운데이션 재단을 운영하고 있으니 함께 동참해 주세요”라는 말을 하지 않았다. 가까운 지인들이나 친구들에게 좋은 일에 함께 동참해 주세요? 라는 말을 할 수가 없었다.

그럼에도 불구하고 어떻게 알았는지 가장 먼저 친척들이나 지인 그리고 친구들이 동참해 주었다. 지난 10년 넘도록 전 세계로 다니면서 야구의 불모지인 곳으로 달려가 야구를 전파하고 또 어렵고 힘든 이웃과 함께 지금까지 할 수 있었던 것도 이름도 없이 빛도 없이 수많은 사람들이 동참해 주었기 때문에 여기까지 달려올 수 있었다.

조금 젊었을 때는 앵버리처럼 누구를 만나던지 “'헐크파운데이션'에 기부해 주세요”라고 이야기 했지만 점점 나이가 들어가서는 젊었을 때 그렇게 열심히 뛰어 다니며 했던 것도 나이로 인해 그런지 이제는 예전처럼 그렇게 하지 못하는 나의 모습을 보게 될 때가 많다.

70을 바라보는 나이지만 지금도 어디를 가나 '이만수 선수, 이만수 감독, 이만수 오빠'라는 이야기를 들을 때가 많다. 젊은이들은 이해할 수 없지만 50대 이상의 나이든 사람들은 어디를 가나 어디선지 나를 만나면 이웃 친구처럼 '이만수 선수'라며 옛날을 회상하곤 한다. 평생 이렇게 살아오다보니 아직도 철이 들지 않을 때가 있다. 여전히 젊은 오빠로 착각을 하며 이 세상을 살아가고 있으니...

홈런왕 이만수! 옛 젊은 시절을 회상하면 나는 누구보다 야구로 인해 사랑을 많이 받았던 사람이다. 55년이란 세월 동안 야구로 인해 받은 사랑을 되돌려 주고자 2014년 10월 말에 SK와이번스 팀에서 나와 2014년 11월 12일부터 국내와 해외로 뛰어 다니면서 재능기부를 시작했다. 초 , 중 , 고 , 대 엘리트 야구부 및 사회인 야구단 그리고 유소년 야구단을 직접 찾아다니느라 전국 곳곳을 뛰어 다녔다.

무엇보다 내가 가장 보람되게 생각하는 것은 '발달장애인 티볼대회'와 '리커버리 야구단'과 함께 하는 일이다. 이들에게 내가 갖고 있는 작은 것으로 인해 즐거워하고 행복해 하는 모습을 볼 때면 정말 이 일을 너무 잘 했다는 생각을 많이 한다.

그리고 평생 한길로 달려온 내가 어느덧 야구인으로 살아온 것이 올해가 55년이 된다. 지난 2014년 10월 말에 SK와이번스 팀에서 나와 인도차이나반도로 내려가 야구를 보급한것이 벌써 11년이 되었다. 지금도 잊혀지지 않는다. 라오스와 베트남 그리고 캄보디아로 내려가 야구를 보급할 때의 보람은 이루 말 할 수 없을 정도로 흐뭇하고 즐거웠다.

이제 다시 중국과 인도네시아로 내려가 야구를 보급하고 나의 재능을 그들에게 전하려고 한다. 비록 나이는 많이 들었지만 이렇게 할 수 있어 야구인의 한 사람으로서 보람을 느낀다. 이렇게 현장을 나와 해외와 국내로 혼자 뛰어다니다 보니 좀 더 체계적인 재능 나눔과 기부 활동을 하기 위해 2016년 사단법인 < 헐크파운데이션 >을 창립하게 되었다. 앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 나는 국내 뿐 아니라 해외에서도 야구의 씨앗을 심고 꿈을 키우기 위해 지금도 열심히 달려가고 있다. '헐크파운데이션'은 국내 야구 꿈나무 육성과 아마추어 야구 발전에 힘쓸 뿐 아니라 바다 건너 라오스와 베트남 그리고 캄보디아와 중국 마지막으로 인도네시아로 내려가 야구를 전파하려고 한다.

내가 이렇게 할 수 있었던 원동력은 121년 전 질레트 선교사가 조선인들에게 야구를 소개하며 우리나라 야구 역사가 시작됐듯, 라오스 최초의 야구단, 라오J브라더스를 창단해 소외된 라오스 청소년들에게 삶의 희망과 더 나은 미래를 꿈꾸게 해 주었다. 또한 라오스 야구협회 창립, 야구장 건설 등을 추진해 야구 불모지 라오스에 새로운 야구 역사를 써 내려 갔다.

그뿐만이 아니다. 라오스에 이어 지난 2020부터 시작한 베트남에 야구가 지난 2021년 4월 10일 베트남 최초로 야구협회가 창설이 되었다. 그리고 2022년 7월말에는 호치민에서 열린 제 1회 내셔널컵 야구대회에서도 성황리에 끝났을 뿐 아니라 2023년 하노이에서 열린 2회 내셔널컵 야구대회에서도 성황리에 끝났고 작년에 있었던 2024년 다낭에서의 제 3회 내셔널컵 야구대회도 성황리에 잘 끝냈다. 그리고 2023년 2월말에 있었던 라오스 DGB컵 국제대회에 참가하기 위해 국가대표 상비군을 뽑아 출전했다.

늘 강조하고 이야기 하지만 혼자서는 절대 여기까지 달려올 수 없다. 헐크의 파워는 혼자가 아닌, 함께 할 때 더욱 강해진다. '헐크파운데이션'은 야구 꿈나무들이 지역적, 경제적 차별 없이 어느 누구라도 소외받지 않고 동등한 기회를 누릴 수 있도록 지원한다. 또한 프로 야구 선수가 되지 않은 이들도 당당한 사회인으로 거듭날 수 있도록 스포츠를 통한 인성 교육과 강인한 정신을 길러 주는 데 힘쓰고 있다.

협동심과 희생정신이 없이는 승리할 수 없는 ‘야구’처럼 '헐크파운데이션' 또한 혼자 갈 수 없다. 모두 땀과 힘을 합칠 때 더 넓게, 더 멀리 사랑과 나눔의 역전 만루홈런을 날릴 수 있다.

처음 인도차이나반도인 라오스로 내려갈 때만 해도 주위에서 모두 '미쳤다' '왜 바보 같은 행동을 하느냐?' '어리석다' '현장으로 돌아오라' 별의별 이야기들을 다 들었지만 121년 전 필립 찔레트 선교사가 세계에서 가장 못살고 가난한 나라인 대한민국으로 들어와 1903년에 YMCA를 설립하고 곧이어 1904년도에 야구를 우리들에게 가르쳐 주게 되었다. 필립 찔레트 선교사가 아니었다면 오늘날 나도 없었을 것이다. 한사람의 영향으로 인해 나 또한 작은 힘이지만 필립 찔레트 선교사가 했던 꿈을 나의 삶이 다하는 그날까지 국내와 해외로 다니면서 야구를 통해 어린 청소년들에게 꿈과 희망 그리고 그들에게 비전을 심어주려고 한다.

불가능은 도전하지 않고 시도하지 않았기 때문에 불가능이라는 말이 생겼는지 모른다. 그러나 그런 불가능도 나의 이성적 판단이 아닌 먼저 한발짝부터 내딛고 시작하니 10년이란 세월이 훌쩍 흘렀지만 내가 계획하고 내가 생각했던 일들이 결국 이루어지는 현실을 보게 되었다. 앞으로 남은 인생 끝까지 지금 같은 자세로 남은 인생을 살아가려고 한다.

여기까지 달려오면서 수많은 사람들이 어두운 세상을 밝히는데 자신의 몸을 아끼지 않는 귀한 분들로 인해 어둡게만 느껴졌던 이 세상도 희망의 빛이 세상을 환하게 비추는 것 같아 마음이 따뜻해지는 이른 아침시간이다.

I went down to have a sauna in the early morning hours of March 2. Due to the habit of waking up early in the morning of my life, I naturally wake up at 5 a.m. even when I get older. Today, I was going to a sauna with the sauna members at the early morning as usual, and CEO Kim Noh-joong approached me and said, "Director, you're doing a good job, so I hope I can be of little help," and asked for the passbook number of the Hulk Foundation.

It's been a little over three years since I moved in. Even though I've been working a lot with my neighbor, I've never said, "I'm running a Hulk Foundation, so please join me." I couldn't say to my close acquaintances or friends, "Please join me in something good?"

Nevertheless, relatives, acquaintances, and friends were the first to participate in how they knew. Over the past decade, I have been able to travel around the world to the barren areas of baseball, spread baseball, and come this far because so many people participated in what I have been able to do with my difficult and difficult neighbors.

When I was a little young, I said, "Please donate to Hulk Foundation," no matter who I met like Anbury, but as I get older, I often see myself running around so hard when I was young, maybe because of my age, but now I can't do that as I used to.

Despite the age of 70, people still hear the words "Lee Man-soo, coach Lee Man-soo, and brother" wherever they go. Young people cannot understand it, but older people in their 50s and older often recall the past, saying, "Lee Man-soo is a player" like a neighbor whenever they meet me, wherever they go. Since I have lived like this all my life, there are still times when I don't grow up. I am still living this world thinking that I am a young brother...

Home Run King, Lee Man-soo! When I think back to my old youth, I was loved more by baseball than anyone else. In order to return the love that baseball has received for 55 years, I left the SK Wyverns in late October 2014 and started donating my talent while playing in Korea and overseas from November 12, 2014. I went around the country looking for elementary, middle, and high school teams, elite baseball teams, community baseball teams, and youth baseball teams.
Most of all, what I find most rewarding is working with the T-Ball Competition for People with Developmental Disabilities and the Recovery Baseball Team. When I see them happy and happy because of the small things I have, I think I did a great job.

And this year has already been 55 years since I've been a baseball player since I've been running all my life. It's already been 11 years since I came out of the SK Wyverns team at the end of October 2014 and went down to the Indochina Peninsula to distribute baseball. I still can't forget it. The reward of going down to Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia to distribute baseball was indescribably satisfying and enjoyable.

Now I'm going to go back to China and Indonesia to spread baseball and pass on my talents to them. Although I'm old, I feel rewarded as a baseball player to do this. After leaving the field and running around alone overseas and in Korea, I founded the Hulk Foundation in 2016 to do more systematic talent sharing and donation activities. As mentioned earlier, I'm still working hard to plant the seeds of baseball and grow my dreams not only at home but also abroad. The Hulk Foundation not only strives to foster domestic baseball dreamers and develop amateur baseball, but also to go down to Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and China to spread baseball.

The driving force behind this was that missionary Gillette introduced baseball to Koreans 121 years ago, and just as Korea's baseball history began, he founded Laos' first baseball team, Lao J Brothers, to dream of hope in life and a better future for underprivileged Lao youth. In addition, he wrote a new baseball history in Laos, a barren country of baseball, by promoting the establishment of the Laos Baseball Association and the construction of a baseball stadium.

It's not the only one. On April 10, 2021, the Vietnam Baseball Association was established in Vietnam, which started in 2020 after Laos. At the end of July 2022, not only did the first National Cup baseball tournament in Ho Chi Minh City end successfully, but also the second National Cup baseball tournament in Hanoi ended successfully in 2023, and the third National Cup baseball tournament in Da Nang, which was held last year, ended successfully. In order to participate in the Laos DGB Cup international tournament at the end of February 2023, the national standing army was selected and participated.

As I always emphasize, I can never run this far alone. Hulk's power is stronger when he is together, not alone. The Hulk Foundation supports aspiring baseball players to enjoy equal opportunities without being left out by anyone without discrimination against region or economy. It is also striving to cultivate personality education and strong spirit through sports so that those who have not become professional baseball players can be reborn as confident people.
Like baseball, which cannot win without cooperation and spirit of sacrifice, the Hulk Foundation cannot go alone. When everyone joins forces with sweat, they can hit a grand slam that turns the tables on love and sharing wider and further away.

When I first went down to Laos, the Indochina Peninsula, I heard all kinds of stories such as "crazy," "Why are you acting stupid?" and "Come back to the scene." 121 years ago, missionary Philip Zilet came to Korea, the worst and poorest country in the world, and established the YMCA in 1903 and taught us baseball in 1904. If it weren't for missionary Philip Zilet, I wouldn't be here today.
