< 사람은 평등하다 >

아들이 연락이 와 '헬프'라 영화를 시간이 되면 꼭 한번 보세요.라고 했다. 무슨 영화이기에 꼭 보라고 하니? 물어보니 이 영화를 보면서 '아빠가 대학 2학년(1979년) 시절에 국가대표로 뽑혀 처음으로 미국에 갔을 때가 기억이 난다는 것이다.

이 영화가 1963년에 있었던 일이라면 아빠가 미국에 경기하러 갔을 때도 보이지 않게 인종차별 많이 당했을 때가 아니냐?고 했다. 그러면서 아들이 “아빠가 저희들에게 어린시절부터 미국에 대해 많은 이야기를 해주지 않았다면 저희들은 미국생활 제대로 하지 못하고 중간에 포기했을지 모른다”고 말했다.

1979년 미국에 갔을 때만 해도 인종차별이 암암리에 심한 시대였다. 물론 우리는 대한민국을 대표하는 야구선수들이기에 솔직히 인종차별이라는 것을 전혀 알지도 못했고 경험할 수도 없었다. 그러나 미국으로 이민간 수많은 대한민국 국민들은 이들의 엄청난 인종차별 속에서도 굳건하게 잘 견디며 대한민국의 위대함을 미국인들에게 알리고 있었다.

미국인들에게 대한민국 사람들이라면...
첫번째 : 부지런한다.
두번째 : 성실하다.
세번째 : 믿을 만 하다.
네번째 : 가족을 사랑하는 민족이다.
다섯번째 : 자녀들에게 엄청난 교육열을 갖고 있다.

아무도 도전하지 않고 아무도 가지 않으려고 했던 미지의 세계 미국이라는 원대한 꿈을 않고 들어간 1세대의 희생이 없었다면 오늘날 대한민국의 K - 팝과 K - 음식 그리고 K - 영화와 K - 드라마에 미국 국민들이 푹 빠지지 않았을 것이다.

나또한 미국생활 10년 동안 1세대와 함께 생활하면서 그들이 얼마나 많은 고생을 하며 미국 땅에서 정착하게 되었는지 알게 되었고, 듣게 되었고, 보게 되었다. 누가 이야기 했던가? 외국에 나가면 누가 이야기 하지 않아도 저절로 '애국자' 되고 자아의 정체성을 갖게 된다. 외국생활 10년 해서가 아니라 기회가 된다면 젊은 청년들은 넓은 세상을 많이 구경하길 바라는 마음이다.

넓은 세상을 보아야 더 큰 꿈을 가질 수 있고 내가 아닌 우리가 될 수 있다. 거기다가 외국에 나가게 되면 대한민국이 얼마나 위대하고 좋은 나라인지 지인들이나 친구들이 이야기 하지 않아도 저절로 깨닫게 된다. 아무리 선생님이나 교수 그리고 정치인들이나 주위에서 이야기 하더라도 본인이 한번이라도 외국에 나가게 되고 그 나라에서 생활하게 되면 앞에서도 이야기 했듯이 저절로 대한민국 애국자가 된다.

이 영화는 2011년 11월 3일에 개봉 되었다. '헬프' 영화에서 1963년 미국 남부 미시시피 잭슨 흑인 가정부는 백인 주인과 화장실도 같이 쓸 수 없다. 아무도 가정부의 삶에 대해 묻지 않았다.

돈 많은 남자와 결혼해 정원과 가정부가 딸린 집의 안주인이 되는 게 최고의 삶이라 여기는 친구들과 달리 대학 졸업 후 작가의 꿈을 이루기 위해 지역 신문사에 취직한 ‘스키터(엠마 스톤)’. 살림 정보 칼럼의 대필을 맡게 된 그녀는 베테랑 가정부 ‘에이블린(바이올라 데이비스)’에게 도움을 요청한다. 

다른 인생은 꿈꿔보지도 못한 채 가정부가 되어 17명의 백인 아이를 헌신적으로 돌봤지만 정작 자신의 아들은 사고로 잃은 ‘에이블린’. ‘스키터’에게 살림 노하우를 알려주던 그녀는 어느 누구도 관심 갖지 않았던 자신과 흑인 가정부들의 인생을 책으로 써보자는 위험한 제안을 받는다. 

때 마침 주인집의 화장실을 썼다는 황당한 이유로 쫓겨난 가정부 ‘미니(옥타비아 스펜서)’가 두 여자의 아슬아슬하지만 유쾌한 반란에 합류한다. 차별과 불만을 이야기 하는 것조차 불법이 되고 생명을 위협받는 일이 되는 시대에, 태어나 처음으로 누군가에게 자신들의 이야기를 털어 놓기 시작하는 ‘에이블린’과 ‘미니’. 그녀들의 용기 있는 고백은 세상을 발칵 뒤집을 만한 책을 탄생시키는데… ( 펌 )

평등의 정의는 “인간의 존엄, 권리, 인격, 가치, 행복의 추구 등에 있어 차별 없이 같은 상태를 말한다.” 세상은 아직 사람위에 사람없고 사람밑에 사람없다. 모든 사람은 법 앞에서도 평등하다는 것을 인식하며 살아가는 세상이 되길 기도할 뿐이다.

My son contacted me and told me to watch the movie "Help" whenever I have time. What kind of movie is it? My son said, "If Dad hadn't told us a lot about America since childhood, we might have given up in the middle without living properly in America.

"When I went to the United States in 1979, it was a time when racism was vaguely severe. Of course, because we are baseball players representing the Republic of Korea, I had no idea or experience of racism. However, many Koreans who immigrated to the United States firmly endured the tremendous racism and promoted the greatness of the Republic of Korea to Americans.

To Americans, if you're Korean...

First: You are diligent.
Number two: earnest.
Third: It is reliable.
Fourth: a family-loving nation.
Fifth: I have a great educational zeal for my children.

Without the sacrifice of the first generation, who went without the grand dream of the U.S., no one challenged and no one tried to go, the American people would not have fallen for Korea's K-pop, K-food, and K-movie and K-drama today.

While living with the first generation for 10 years in the United States, I also learned, heard, and saw how much they suffered and settled on American soil. Who talked about it? When you go abroad, you will automatically become a "patriot" and have your own identity even if no one talks about it.

Not because I have lived abroad for 10 years, but if I have a chance, I hope that young people will see a lot of the wide world.You can have a bigger dream and become us, not me, only when you look at the wider world. In addition, when you go abroad, you will automatically realize how great and good Korea is without telling your acquaintances or friends.

No matter how much teachers, professors, and politicians talk about it, you will go abroad at least once, and if you live in that country, you will automatically become a patriot of the Republic of Korea, as I said before.The film was released on November 3, 2011. In the "Help" movie, a black housekeeper in Jackson, Mississippi in the southern United States, in 1963, cannot even share a bathroom with a white owner.

The definition of equality refers to "the same state without discrimination in the pursuit of human dignity, rights, personality, values, and happiness." The world is not yet above people, there is no one under people. I just pray that everyone will be a world where they live recognizing that they are equal before the law.
