< 한 평의 연습실이 너의 무대가 아니다 >

지금도 '심포니송' 함신익 지휘자가 나에게 했던 이야기가 잊혀지지 않는다. “한 평의 연습실이 너의 무대가 아니라 3천명 청중이 가득 차 있는 카네기 홀이 너의 무대라고 생각하고 연습하라.” 여러번 공연장에 갔기 때문에 함신익 지휘자의 이야기가 실감이 날 때가 많다. 아무리 멀리 있어도 청중들에게 잘 들릴 수 있도록 노래나 악기를 잘 다룰 줄 알아야 한다는 함신익 지휘자의 말은 많은 시간이 지났음에도 불구하고 지금도 잊혀지지 않는다.

정말 신기하게 중학교 시절과 고등학교 시절 그리고 대학시절에 혼자 개인연습 할 때면 언제나 3만명이 웅집하고 있는 동대문야구장을 연상하며 연습했던 기억이 있다. 70을 바라보는 이 나이에 어떻게 중학교 시절부터 그런 생각을 갖고 연습을 했는지 정말 신기할 뿐이다.

지금도 잊혀지지 않는다. 나는 기존의 친구들보다 많이 늦게 야구를 시작했다. 중학교 시절부터 야구를 시작했으니 늦어도 많이 늦게 야구를 했다. 그런데 신기하게도 기존의 친구들보다 특별하게 야구를 어린 나이부터 눈을 뜨게 된 것 같다.

그 단적인 것이 혼자 스윙을 하더라도 무작정 숫자를 체우기 위해 스윙 연습을 한 것이 아니라 하나를 하더라도 실전과 같은 연습을 했다. 하나를 하더라도 전력으로 스윙연습을 했고 가상으로 투수가 무슨 볼을 던질 것인지 생각하며 스윙연습을 했다.

내가 야구하던 시절에는 유투브나 사설 야구 아카데미 그리고 선진야구를 하던 시절이 아니라 본인이 스스로 터득하며 야구하던 시절이었다. 제대로 가르치는 선배들이나 지도자들이 많이 없던 시절이라 혼자서 공부하고 개발하지 않으면 안 되는 시절이다.

옛날이라 전문적인 야구 책도 제대로 구입하기 어려웠던 시절이다. 동영상은 당연히 없었다. 그러다보니 요즈음처럼 외다리 타법이나 중심을 많이 움직여서 타격하는 고도의 기술은 상상도 할 수 없었던 시절이다. 지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것이 옛날 타자들은 대부분 고정된 타격폼을 많이 갖고 있었던 시절이다.

타격할 때 힘을 모으기 위해 다리를 들거나 중심 이동을 하는 그런 고도의 타격 기술들은 상상도 할 수 없었던 시절이다. 많은 선수들이 중심을 대부분 오른쪽 중심에 둔체 요즈음처럼 고도의 중심 이동을 하지 못하고 뻣뻣하게 서 있는 타격 자세가 대부분이었다.

옛날에는 이런 야구를 많이 하다보니 대부분 투수들이 3점대 이상 던지는 투수들이 많이 없었다. 옛날 야구는 그야말로 투고 타저였다. 나의 고교야구와 대학시절만 해도 대부분 경기가 투수전이었다.

이런 야구를 했어도 어린시절부터 나는 개인연습할 때 이미지 트레이닝을 하며 연습했다. 이렇게 연습 하다보니 스윙 100개를 돌리면 최소 두시간이 걸린다. 스윙 연습을 다 끝내면 다시 포수연습에 들어갔다. 포수연습도 마찬가지다. 주자가 1루에서 2루로 도루 한다는 가상을 갖고 스로우잉 했던 기억이 있다.

지금도 70을 바라보는 나이지만 수많은 지도자들을 걸치면서 가장 많이 들었던 이야기가 '연습을 실전처럼 하라'였다.

나의 친구 함신익 지휘자가 단원들에게 늘 강조했던 “한 평의 연습실이 너의 무대가 아니라 3천명 청중이 가득 차 있는 카네기 홀이 너의 무대라고 생각하고 연습하라.”

Even now, I still can't forget the story that conductor Ham Shin-ik told me. "Practice thinking that the practice room of one criticism is not your stage, but Carnegie Hall, which is full of 3,000 audiences." Conductor Ham Shin-ik's story often feels real because he has been to the concert hall several times. No matter how far away you are, conductor Ham Shin-ik's words that you should know how to play songs or instruments well so that you can hear them well to the audience are still haunting.

Interestingly, I remember practicing alone in middle school, high school, and college, thinking of Dongdaemun Baseball Stadium, where 30,000 people always practice alone. It's just amazing how I practiced with that thought since I was in middle school at this age of 70.

I still can't forget it. I started playing baseball much later than my old friends. Since I started playing baseball in middle school, I played baseball a lot late at the latest. But strangely, I think I opened my eyes to baseball from an early age, which is more special than my old friends.

The only thing is that even if I swing alone, I didn't practice swing to fill the numbers blindly, but even if I did one, I practiced the same practice as in practice. Even if I did one, I practiced swing with all my might and virtually thought about what ball the pitcher was going to throw.

When I was playing baseball, I didn't play YouTube, private baseball academies, or advanced baseball, but I learned it myself and played baseball. It was a time when there weren't many seniors or leaders who taught properly, so I had to study and develop on my own.

In the old days, it was difficult to buy professional baseball books properly. Of course, there was no video. As a result, it was a time when I could not even imagine one-legged batting or high-tech hitting by moving the center as much as today. What is still haunting is the time when most of the old hitters had many fixed batting styles.

It was a time when such high-level hitting techniques were unimaginable to raise the legs or move the center to gather strength when hitting. Most of the players were centered on the right center, and most of them were in a stiff standing position without moving the center as much as they did today.

In the old days, most pitchers did not throw more than three points because they played a lot of such baseball. Baseball in the old days was simply a pitching pitcher. In my high school baseball and college years, most games were pitcher games.

Even though I played baseball like this, I practiced image training during individual practice since childhood. As I practice like this, it takes at least two hours to turn 100 swings. When I finished swing practice, I started catcher practice again. The same goes for catcher practice. I remember throwing around with the assumption that the runner stole from first base to second base.

Although he is still at the age of 70, the most common story he heard while walking through numerous leaders was "Practice like a real thing."

My friend, conductor Ham Shin-ik, always emphasized to the members, "Practice thinking that the practice room of Pyeong is not your stage, but Carnegie Hall, which is full of 3,000 audiences, is your stage."
