< 세월은 흘러도 내 마음의 고향 >

2025년도 MLB 메이저리그 개막이 오늘(3월 18일) 첫 경기가 일본 도쿄 돔에서 시카고 컵스 팀과 LA 다져스 팀과의 경기가 시작이 된다. ( 우리나라프로야구는 3월 22일 토요일에 개막이 시작 된다. ) 작년 2024년에는 MLB 메이저리그 개막이 한국에서 열렸다면 올해는 3월 18일 MLB 메이저리그 개막이 일본에서 열린다.

올해도 MLB 메이저리그가 시작되자 나는 어김 없이 지난 7년 동안 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 몸담았던 팀을 응원하게 된다. 내가 미국 MLB 메이저리그인 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀을 응원했다면 한국에서는 선수시절에 몸 담았던 삼성라이온즈 팀과 지도자 생활 했던 SK 와이번스 ( 현 SSG LANDERS )팀을 응원한다.

시카고 화이트 삭스 팀은 올해가 월드시리즈 우승(2005년) 20주년이 되는 해다. 프런트나 팬들 그리고 현장에 있는 선수들도 월드시리즈 우승 20주년을 기념하는 해이기 때문에 다른 어느해보다 선수들의 마음 자세가 남다를 것이다.

삼성라이온즈 팀에서 16년간 선수생활을 정리하고 미국으로 건너가 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 2000년부터 2006년까지 7년 동안 지도자 생활을 했다. 지금은 웃으며 그 시절을 회상하지만 처음 지도자 생활을 시작했을 때만 해도 언어와 문화의 장벽에 막혀 많은 어려움이 있었다. 가끔 포기하고 싶은 마음도 들었다. 그렇지만 지금 돌이켜보면 팀에서 함께 생활했던 많은 코치들, 구단 운영팀, 선수들은 내 생애 최고의 시간을 보냈다고 해도 지나침이 없다. 특히 그 중에서도 시카고 화이트 삭스의 팬들과 나눴던 시간들은 결코 잊을 수가 없다. 지금까지도 수만 킬로미터의 물리적 거리를 뛰어넘어 그들과 연락을 주고 받고 있으니 말이다.

2005년 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀이 감격스러운 월드시리즈 우승을 하고 나서 2015년 우승 10주년을 기념하기 위한 파티에 구단 초청을 받았다. 온 가족이 다 함께 시카고 구장을 방문했다. 야구 경기를 관람하는 가족을 두고 많은 추억이 깃든 그리운 불펜을 방문했다. 정말 놀라운 일이 벌어졌다. 예전 그 곳과 인접한 관중석을 지키던 그 팬들이 여전히 그 곳을 지키고 있는 것이었다.(10년이 흐른 지금 과연 그때 그 자리를 지키고 있던 나의 친구들이 지금도 그 자리를 지키고 있을지 많이 궁금하다.) 시카고 화이트 삭스의 유니폼을 입은 그들은 같은 자리에서 팀을 응원하고 그들의 인생을 즐기고 있었다. 나를 잊지 않고 먼저 반갑게 인사를 하는 그들에게서 많은 것을 느끼게 된다.

지금도 잊지 못하는 에피소드가 있다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 7년 동안 활동하면서 불펜에 있는 팬들과 가족처럼 지냈다. 이렇게 가깝게 지내다보니 시즌 끝나거나 시즌 중에 하루 쉬는 날이 있으면 친구들과 같이 골프치고 나서 저녁시간에 같이 식사하며 즐거운 시간을 보냈던 기억이 아직도 나의 뇌리에서 사라지지 않고 있다.

한국에서는 상상도 할 수 없는 일들을 미국에서 많은 경험과 새로운 것들을 배우고 깨닫게 되었다. 지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것은 그당시 내가 살고 있던 곳은 시카고 북쪽에서 살았고 친구들은 남쪽에 살았기 때문에 자동차로 무려 한시간 30분 이상 내려가야 친구들을 만날 수 있었다.

어느새 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀을 떠나온지 20년이 되었다. 시간이 많이 흘렀지만 여전히 그들은 같은 자리에서 열심히 경기를 관람하고 응원을 하고 있을 것이다. 그들은 아직도 마음 한 구석에 한국에서 온 나를 기억하고 소중한 친구라고 생각하고 있을 것이다. 세월이 더 지나도 그들은 팬이 아닌 친구로서 내 마음 속에 영원히 기억될 것이다.

MLB Opens in 2025 The first game will begin today (March 18) at the Tokyo Dome in Japan against the Chicago Cubs and the Los Angeles Dodgers. (The opening of the Korean professional baseball league will begin on Saturday, March 22nd.) If the MLB opening was held in Korea in 2024 last year, the MLB opening will be held in Japan on March 18 this year.

As the MLB Major League begins again this year, I will cheer for the team that has been with the Chicago White Sox for the past seven years without breaking the rules. If I supported the Chicago White Sox team, the MLB Major League in the U.S., I will support the Samsung Lions team that I used to be a player and the SK Wyverns (current SSG LANDERS) team that served as a leader in Korea.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the World Series championship (2005) for the Chicago White Sox. Players at the front desk, fans and on-site may have different attitudes than any other year as it is a year to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the World Series.

After 16 years of playing for the Samsung Lions, he moved to the U.S. and served as a leader for the Chicago White Sox from 2000 to 2006. I now recall those days with a smile, but when I first began teaching, I was blocked by language and culture and had many difficulties. Sometimes I wanted to give up. Looking back, however, it is not excessive to say that many of the coaches, club management teams, and players I have lived with on the team have had the best years of my life. Especially, I can never forget the times I spent with fans of the Chicago White Sox. I have communicated with them over tens of thousands of kilometers of physical distance.

After the Chicago White Sox won the World Series in 2005, they were invited to a party to celebrate the 10th anniversary of their victory. The whole family visited the stadium. I visited a bullpen session filled with memories of my family watching baseball games. Something amazing happened. The fans who used to guard the stands adjacent to the spot were still there. (I wonder if my friends who were there 10 years later will still be there.) Wearing the Chicago White Sox uniforms, they were cheering for the team and enjoying their lives. I feel a lot from them who never forget me and greeting me first.

There is an episode that I still can't forget. While working with the Chicago White Sox for seven years, I spent time like a family with fans in the bullpen. Since we were close like this, I still remember playing golf with my friends when the season was over or when I had a day off during the season, and then having dinner together.

I learned and realized many new things and experiences in America that I could not imagine in Korea. What is still haunting is that at that time, I lived north of Chicago and my friends lived south, so I had to go down by car for more than an hour and a half to meet my friends.

It's been 20 years since I left the Chicago White Sox. A lot of time has passed, but they will still be watching and cheering for the game in the same place. They will still remember me from Korea and think of me as a precious friend in the corner of their heart. They will be forever remembered in my heart as friends, not fans.
