< 김한근이라는 교과서 >

야구 인생 55년 동안, 중학교 1학년 때 처음 야구를 어떻게 해야 할지 몰라 헤매던 시절, 나에게 야구란 무엇인지 하나하나 알려주신 선배님이 계신다. 그분이 바로 김한근 선배님이다.

그 시절 나는 대구 시내 중심가에 살았고, 선배님은 경북대학교 근처에 거주하셨다. 버스를 타고도 30분 이상 걸리는 거리였지만, 나는 배트 하나 들고 매일같이 선배님 댁까지 달려갔다. 이른 새벽이나 저녁 무렵에도 야구를 가르쳐 달라고 찾아가면, 선배님은 단 한 번도 귀찮아하지 않으시고, 항상 정성스럽게 가르쳐주셨다.

우리는 세 살 차이로 대학 시절 나는 1학년, 선배님은 4학년이었다. 당시만 해도 선배가 무서워 말도 제대로 붙이기 어려운 시절이었다. 김한근 선배님이 늘 나를 챙겨주신 덕분에 2, 3학년 선배들에게 혼나는 일 없이 평탄하게 1년을 보낼 수 있었다.

선배님과 함께 보낸 시간이 어느덧 50년을 넘겼다. 우리는 중학교, 고등학교, 대학, 그리고 프로 무대까지 함께 선수 생활을 했고, 지금도 연락을 주고받으며 인연을 이어오고 있다. 나에게 김한근 선배님은 단순한 선배가 아니라, 인생의 스승과도 같은 존재다.

김한근 선배님은 대구중학교와 대구상고, 한양대학교를 거쳐 삼성 라이온즈에 입단했다. 고등학교 시절부터 전국적인 명성을 얻은 선수였으며, 투수와 타자를 겸하며 팀의 중심 역할을 맡았다. 특히 1973년 세 차례의 전국대회 우승을 이끌며 결승전을 홀로 완투할 정도로 뛰어난 투수이기도 했다. 강한 체격과 지치지 않는 체력, 탁월한 제구와 변화구 구사는 단연 압도적이었다.

그러나 프로에 들어와서는 몸을 사리지 않는 플레이 스타일로 인해 잦은 부상을 겪었고, 기대만큼의 성적을 오래 이어가지 못한 것이 안타까웠다. 결국 1985년, 빙그레 이글스로 이적하게 되었다. 하지만 선배님의 진짜 전성기는 그 이후에 펼쳐졌다.

지도자로서의 김한근 선배님은 더욱 빛났다. OB 베어스 타격코치, 대구상고 감독, 삼성 라이온즈 타격코치, 한양대학교 코치와 감독을 거치며 수많은 선수들을 성장시켰다. 해박한 이론과 실전에 강한 리더십은 후배들에게 큰 신뢰를 주었고, 선배님이 가는 곳마다 선수들이 더 좋은 성적을 냈다. 그 덕분에 여러 팀에서 먼저 모셔가려 했던, 진정한 현장형 지도자였다.

지도자로서 선배님과 가장 가까이 함께했던 기억은 한양대학교 감독 시절, 일본 캠프에 동행했던 경험이다. 같은 숙소에서 지내며 나눈 이야기들, 훈련장에서 보여주신 열정은 지금도 내 기억 속에 선명히 남아 있다. 프로야구 초창기 룸메이트로 함께 생활하던 시절도 마찬가지다. 근면함과 성실함으로 하루를 시작하시던 모습이 지금도 잊히지 않는다.

학문에 대한 열정 역시 대단하셨다. 아침이면 신문을 독파하듯 읽으셨고, 사회면과 정치면, 한문과 역사까지 빠짐없이 섭렵하셨다. 사극은 거의 빼놓지 않고 챙겨보실 정도로, 한국사에 대한 애정도 깊었다. 그 덕분에 ‘야구선수’이면서도 동시에 ‘지식인’이라는 말을 자연스럽게 떠올리게 만드는 분이셨다.

현장을 떠난 지금도 선배님의 배움에 대한 자세는 여전하다. 새로운 야구 이론이나 코칭법이 있으면 직접 발로 뛰며 배운다. 특히 멘탈 코칭 과정에서는 1기로 참여하셔서 1년간 단 하루도 빠지지 않고 수강하셨고, 그 열정에 자극받아 나도 2기로 참여해 수료할 수 있었다.

건강 관리에도 철저하신 분이다. 근육이 빠지면 잔병치레가 많아진다며 꾸준한 웨이트 트레이닝을 빼놓지 않으신다. 예전만큼 자주 만나진 못하지만, 우리는 종종 통화를 통해 안부를 나눈다. 몸은 예전 같지 않지만, 언제나 현역 시절처럼 깨어 있고 사회에 도움이 되는 일을 마다하지 않는 멋진 선배다.

<A textbook called Kim Han-geun>

For 55 years in baseball life, there is a senior who taught me one by one what baseball is when I was wandering around for the first time in the first year of middle school without knowing what to do with it. That is Kim Han-geun.

At that time, I lived in the center of downtown Daegu, and my senior lived near Kyungpook National University. It took more than 30 minutes by bus, but I ran to my senior's house every day with a bat. When I visited them to teach me baseball even at early dawn or in the evening, they never bothered me, and they always taught me sincerely.

When we were in college, three years apart, I was in the first grade and my seniors were in the fourth grade. Back then, it was hard to even talk properly because I was afraid of my seniors. Thanks to Kim Han-geun's always caring for me, I was able to spend the year flatly without getting scolded by my seniors.

It has already been more than 50 years since I spent time with my senior. We played together in middle school, high school, college, and professional stages, and we are still in contact with each other. To me, Kim Han-geun is not just a senior, but a teacher of life.

Kim Han-geun joined the Samsung Lions after graduating from Daegu Middle School, Daegu Sang High School, and Hanyang University. He gained national fame from his high school days, and played a central role in the team as both a pitcher and a batter. Notably, he led the team to three national championships in 1973, and was an outstanding pitcher who completely pitched in the finals alone. His strong physique, tireless physical strength, and outstanding ball control and breaking pitching were overwhelming.

However, when he entered the professional league, he suffered frequent injuries due to his unwavering style of play, and it was a pity that he could not continue his performance as expected. Eventually, he moved to the Binggrae Eagles in 1985. However, his real heyday unfolded after that.

Kim Han-geun was even more brilliant as a leader. He developed numerous players through his stints as an OB Bears batting coach, Daegu Sang High School coach, Samsung Lions batting coach, and Hanyang University coach. His deep theory and strong practical leadership gave great trust to his juniors, and the players performed better wherever he went. As a result, he was a true on-the-job leader who wanted to serve him first in various teams.

The closest I remember as a leader was the experience of accompanying my senior to a Japanese camp when I was a coach at Hanyang University. The stories we shared while staying in the same lodging and the passion you showed at the training site are still clearly in my memory. The same applies to the days when we lived together as roommates in the early days of professional baseball. I still can't forget how you started your day with diligence and diligence.

He was also passionate about his studies. He read newspapers like a reader in the morning, and was well versed in social and political aspects, Chinese characters and history. He also had a deep affection for Korean history, as he watched almost all historical dramas. As a result, he was a baseball player and made me think of the term "intellectual" at the same time.

Even after leaving the field, the senior's attitude toward learning remains. If there is a new baseball theory or coaching method, you can learn by running on your own feet. In particular, in the mental coaching course, he participated as the first team and took the course without missing a single day for a year, and I was able to participate as the second team and complete it.

He is also a thorough healthcare worker. He always does weight training, saying, "If you lose muscle, you will get more serious." Although we do not see each other as often as we used to, we often talk to each other on the phone to say hello. He is a wonderful senior who is always awake and does not hesitate to do things that are helpful to society, even though he is not the same as before.
