라오스 제2의 도시 루앙프라방에서, 손사랑 감독은 오늘도 묵묵히 혼자 뛴다.
야구글러브 하나, 낡은 배트 한 자루, 아이들 웃음 몇 개면 충분하다는 듯이.

그의 이름을 처음 들은 지도 어느덧 5년이 넘었다. 20대 후반의 젊은 나이에 라오스에 정착해, 피아노 학원과 작은 카페를 운영하며 세 아이의 아버지로 살아가던 손사랑 감독.그는 “왜 이 도시에 야구팀이 하나도 없지?”라는 질문 하나로, 2023년 10월, 루앙프라방 최초의 야구팀을 창단했다.

이름은 ‘Red Rider’.

창단한지 횟수로 3년 되었지만 야구단을 운영한지 1년도 채 되지 않았지만, 그 열정만큼은 오래된 팀을 능가한다. 처음엔 몇 명 되지 않던 아이들이 어느새 모여들었고, 지금은 남학생과 여학생들이 함께 뛰고 던지고 훈련한다.

라오스는 모계사회라 그런지 여자선수들의 참여도 특히 활발하다. 처음엔 남학생들 뒤에서 응원만 하던 소녀들이 이젠 오히려 먼저 유니폼을 입고 훈련장에 나타난다. Red Rider엔 현재 여성 선수만 8명. 손사랑 감독은 머지않아 남녀팀이 따로 구성될 날도 기대하고 있다.

물론 어려움도 많다. 무엇보다, 야구장이 없다. 선수들은 소똥이 가득한 축구장에서 훈련을 한다. 딛는 땅이 울퉁불퉁하고, 미끄럽고, 위험하다. 그럼에도 누구 하나 불평하지 않는다. 아이들은 그저 야구가, 그리고 함께 뛰는 이 시간이 좋을 뿐이다.

손사랑 감독은 말한다.

“저는 야구를 전문적으로 배운 사람은 아닙니다. 그래도 아이들에게 꼭 해주고 싶은 말은 하나 있어요. ‘즐겁게 야구하자.’ 그 마음만 잃지 않으면, 언젠가는 좋은 팀이 될 수 있다고 믿습니다.”

그리고 그는 지금, 혼자가 아니다. 함께 고민하고, 함께 뛸 지도자, 아이들이 다치지 않도록 도와줄 기초 시설, 지속적인 후원의 손길이 필요할 뿐이다.

“If you can dream it, you can do it.”
꿈꿀 수 있다면, 그 꿈은 반드시 이루어질 수 있다.

소똥밭 위에서 야구를 배우는 아이들. 땀에 젖은 유니폼에도, 신기하게도 웃음은 선명하다. 가르치는 손사랑 감독도, 배우는 아이들도, 이 꿈을 무겁지 않게 지고 나아간다.

모두가 잠든 새벽, 조용히 야구 글러브를 말리며 기도하는 한 사람이 있다. 그리고 그 옆에서 함께 걸어주는 누군가를 오늘도 기다리고 있다.

In Luang Prabang, Laos' second-largest city, director Son Sa-rang plays silently and alone today.

As if a pair of baseball gloves, an old bat, and a few children's laughter were enough.

It has been more than five years since he first heard his name. Son Sa-rang, the coach who settled in Laos at the young age of his late 20s and lived as a father of three, running a piano academy and a small cafe. With one question: "Why doesn't the city have any baseball teams?" he founded Luang Prabang's first baseball team in October 2023.

The name is Red Rider.

It has been three years since its foundation, but it has been less than a year since it ran a baseball team, but its passion exceeds that of an old team. At first, only a few children gathered, and now boys and girls run, throw, and train together.

As Laos is a matriarchal society, female athletes are especially active in participation. Girls who initially only cheered for the boys are now appearing in the training ground wearing uniforms first. The Red Rider currently has eight female athletes. Coach Son Sa-rang expects that the men's and women's teams will be formed soon.

Of course, there are many difficulties. Above all, there are no ballparks. Players train on soccer fields full of cattle droppings. The ground is uneven, slippery, and dangerous. And yet no one complains. Kids just love baseball, and this time of playing together.

Director Son Sa-rang says.

"I'm not a professional baseball player. But there's one thing I really want to tell them. 'Let's have fun playing baseball.' I believe that if we don't lose that mindset, we can be a good team someday."

And now, he is not alone. He just needs a leader to agonize with, run with, infrastructure to help children not get hurt, and a constant helping hand.
