< 나를 넘어 모두가 행복해진다면 나는 이 길을 걸어 갈 것이다 >

야구는 단순히 스포츠가 아니라 하나의 문화라는 것을 잊어서는 안 된다. 내가 스포테인먼트라는 개념을 국내 야구에 접목시키기 위해 노력한 이유가 바로 여기에 있다. SK와이번스 코치 시절 팬티 세리머니를 할 수 있었던 이유도 하나의 문화를 만들어 가고 싶은 마음에서다. 팬과 함께 즐기는 야구. 야구는 선수만 하는 것이 아님을 선진야구를 보며 많이 배우게 되었다. 지난 미국에서의 10년 동안 보고 배운것은 팬들도 함께 선수들과 뛰고 있다는 것을 보게 되었다. 그래서 오늘의 나를 있게 만들어준 팬들에게 보답하는 것은 너무나 당연한 일이다.

그래서 어떠한 방식으로, 내가 팬들에게 받았던 사랑을 보답할까 하고 고민을 많이 했다. 그러한 고민이 현재 하고 있는 재능기부 일로 이어졌다. 헐크 파운데이션이라는 재단을 운영하고 있는 것도 그러한 책임을 다하고 싶어서 만들게 되었다. 헐크 파운데이션을 통해 국내의 유소년 선수들과 라오스 및 베트남 그리고 캄보디아와 곧 있을 인도네시아 현지 선수들을 지원해 주는 등 다양한  야구와 사회활동들을 그들과 함께 하고 있다.

나는 재능기부를 하기 위해 전국을 돌아다니고 있다. 고등학교는 3박 4일, 중학교는 2박 3일, 초등학교는 당일 기본으로 다니고 있다. 매년 전국고교야구대회 할 때마다 경기장을 찾아 '이만수 포수상 및 홈런상'을 찾는 일도 빼놓을 수 없는 나의 과제다. 유소년 캠프뿐만 아니라, 선수들을 위한 강연에도 빠짐없이 나가고 있다. 여기에 라오스와 베트남 그리고 캄보디아 등 외국에도 나가야 한다.

그 외에 사회로부터 소외된 이들을 위한 사회인 야구단 리커버리 야구단 총재를 맡고 있다. 게다가 발달장애인들을 위한 티볼대회 활동에도 많은 정성을 쏟고 있다. 발달장애인 야구단 협회 명예회장을 맡고 있는 이유도 그들도 사회의 한 구성원이라는 것을 일께워주기 위함이다. 나는 야구를 통해 어느덧 55년째하고 있다. 야구가 사회에 해줄 수 있는 것들이 얼마나 많은지 모른다. 앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 리커버리 야구단과 발달장애인 티볼대회를 통해 많은 사람들이 행복해 하는 모습들을 볼 때면 야구인의 한사람으로서 너무 행복하고 보람을 느낀다.

재능기부를 통해서 나는 ‘나’를 넘어서 ‘모두’가 행복해진다면 나의 삶이 다하는 그날까지 달려갈 것이라는 모토를 가지고 걸어가고 있다. 재능기부는 화려하지도 않고 아무런 부와 명예도 주어지지 않지만 이 활동을 통해 많은 사람들에게 삶의 의미를 찾게 하고 꿈과 희망을 줄 수 있다는 것이 나를 보람되게 해준다.

그렇기 때문에 나를 통해 누군가에게 희망을 주고 그들의 삶을 풍요롭게 한다면 나는 계속 그들에게 꿈과 희망을 주며 살아가고 싶다. 그것이 내가 야구를 통해 받은 사랑을 팬들에게 돌려주기 위한 마지막 과제이자 숙명이라고 생각한다.

후배들도 야구를 통해 받은 사랑을 사회에 돌려주기 위해 애써 주었으면 한다. 그것이 야구의 위상을 높이는 일이고, 결국 야구선수로서 자신의 삶을 보람되게 하는 것이다.


< If everyone is happy beyond me, I will walk this way >

It should not be forgotten that baseball is not just a sport but a culture. This is why I tried to incorporate the concept of sports into domestic baseball. When I was a coach with the SK Wyverns, I was able to do the underwear ceremony because I wanted to create a culture. Baseball that I enjoy with my fans. I learned a lot from watching advanced baseball that baseball is not just about players. What I saw and learned over the past 10 years in the U.S. was that fans are also playing with players. So it is only natural to repay the fans who made me who I am today.

So, I thought a lot about how to repay the love I received from my fans. That concern led to the talent donation work that I am currently doing. I made a foundation called the Hulk Foundation because I wanted to fulfill that responsibility. Through the Hulk Foundation, I am engaged in a variety of baseball and social activities, including supporting young domestic players, Laos and Vietnam, Cambodia, and upcoming Indonesian players.

I go around the country to donate my talents. I go to high school for three nights and four days, middle school for two nights and three days, and elementary school for the same day. Every year at the national high school baseball tournament, I go to the stadium and find the Lee Man-soo Catcher Award and the Home Run Award. I go to all lectures for players as well as youth camps. I have to go to Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.

In addition, he serves as the president of the Recovery Baseball Team, a social group for those marginalized by society. In addition, he is putting a lot of effort into activities for T-ball competitions for people with developmental disabilities. The reason he serves as the honorary chairman of the Baseball Association for the Developmentally Disabled is to let him know that they are also members of society. I have been doing it for 55 years through baseball. I don't know how much baseball can do to society. As mentioned earlier, seeing many people happy through the Recovery Baseball Team and the T-ball Championship for the Developmentally Disabled makes me so happy and rewarding as a baseball player.

Through talent donation, I am walking with the motto that if "everyone" becomes happy beyond "I", I will run to the day when my life is over. Talent donation is not spectacular and no wealth or honor is given, but it makes me feel rewarded that I can find the meaning of life for many people through this activity and give them dreams and hopes.

Therefore, if I give hope to someone and enrich their lives through me, I want to continue to live with dreams and hopes to them. I think that is the last task and destiny to return the love I received through baseball to my fans.

I hope that my juniors will also work hard to return the love they received through baseball to society. That is what raises the status of baseball, and in the end, makes your life as a baseball player worthwhile.
