< 나의 친구 토미 톰슨 >

어제(18일) 오후에 권혁돈 감독이 동영상 하나와 글을 보내왔다. "제 제자가 한화이글스 국제 스카우트로 있는데 지금 미국에 머물고 있습니다. '토미 톰슨' 이 다가오더니 '한국에서 왔느냐?'고 물으면서 대뜸 '이만수코치를 아냐?'고 물어보더라는 겁니다. 너무 잘 알고 있다고 하니 '토미 톰슨'이 꼭 안부를 전해 달라면서 그 자리에서 영상으로 안부를 전해 주었습니다." 영상을 보니 나의 친구 토미 톰슨 코치다. 얼마나 반가운지 나도 모르게 수십번 돌려 보았다. 몇년만에 보는 친구인가? 친구를 보지 못한지 벌써 18년이 되었다.

나는 미국생활 2년째인 1999년도에 샬롯의 시카고 화이트 삭스 트리플 A팀 (Chicago White Sox triple A)으로 옮겼다. 시카고 화이트 삭스 트리플A 팀에 있을 때 토미 톰슨 친구는 배터리 순회 코치였다. 1999년도 캠프 때부터 토미 톰슨 친구를 알게 되었다. 그리고 다음해인 2000년도부터는 7년동안 시카고에 거주하며 시카고 화이트 삭스 (Chicago White Sox) 메이저리그 팀에서 계속 지도자로 생활할 때 친구로 지냈다.

2000년도에 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 지도자생활 할 때도 자연스럽게 친구로 지냈으니 18년이란 세월이 지났음에도 멀리 반대편에 있는 나에게 안부를 전해주니 얼마나 반갑고 고마운 친구인지 모른다.

지금은 생각만 해도 웃음 꽃을 가져다 주는 나의 미국생활 10년이지만 당연히 좋은 추억만 있었던 것은 아니다. 그래도 힘든 추억은 늘 좋은 추억들이 잘 감싸준다. 그리고 그 좋은 추억은 항상 좋은 사람과의 관계에서 시작된다. 나의 친구 토미 톰슨은 메이저리그에서 잘 정착 할 수 있도록 만들어준 고마운 친구다.

내가 토미 톰슨 친구를 처음 만났을 때만 해도 젊었는데 지금 영상을 보니 세월이 얼마나 많이 흘렀는지 나이가 들어 보인다. 늘 강조하는 이야기지만 젊었을 때는 잘 몰랐지만 이렇게 나이가 들어보니 좋은 추억들이 많아 날마다 행복한 시간을 보내고 있다.

세월이 많이 흘렀음에도 불구하고 이렇게 멀리 미국에서 그리워 해주고 안부를 전해주어 정말 고맙다.

On the afternoon of yesterday (18th), Kwon Hyuk-don sent me a video and a message. "My student is a Hanwha Eagles international scout and he is currently staying in the U.S.A. Tommy Thompson approached me and asked me, 'Are you from Korea?' and asked me, 'Do you know Coach Lee Man-soo?' I heard that he knew me so well that Tommy Thompson asked me to say hi on the spot and said hello through the video." The video shows my friend Tommy Thompson. I watched it dozens of times without realizing how nice it is to see him. How many years has it been? It has been 18 years since I have not seen him.

In 1999, my second year in the U.S., I moved to Charlotte's Chicago White Sox Triple A. Tommy Thompson was a battery traveling coach when he was with the Chicago White Sox Triple A team. I had known Tommy Thompson since the 1999 camp. And the following year, in 2000, I lived in Chicago for seven years and became friends while still leading the Chicago White Sox.

When I was a leader of the Chicago White Sox in 2000, I naturally became a friend, so I don't know how nice and grateful he is to say hello to me on the other side even after 18 years.

For now, I have lived in the U.S. for 10 years, but of course, I didn't have only good memories. Still, hard memories are always embraced by good memories. And those good memories always begin with a relationship with a good person. My friend Tommy Thompson is a grateful friend who made me settle down well in the Major League.

I was young when I first met my friend Tommy Thompson, but looking at the video now, I can see how much time has passed. I always emphasize this, but I didn't know when I was young, but when I get older, I have a lot of good memories, so I'm having a happy time every day.

Thank you so much for missing me and saying hello to me from far away in the United States, even though many years have passed.
