2025년 5월 30일 월요일, 경기 김포시 신곡리 191-26 전호생활야구장에서 “제3회 이만수배 발달장애인 티볼 야구대회”가 열린다.

벌써 3회를 맞았다니 감회가 새롭다. 처음 대회를 시작했을 땐 걱정과 오해가 많았다. “왜 그런 걸 하느냐?”, “혹시 장애인을 이용하려는 거 아니냐?”, “대회 중에 사고라도 나면 어떻게 할 거냐?”, “일회성이라면 아예 시작하지 마라.” 이런 말들로 초대 회장이자 함께한 이갑용 회장과 운영진들은 적잖이 상처를 받았다. 좋은 뜻으로 시작한 일에 오해가 따르니 마음이 무거웠던 시간들이었다.

하지만 나는 늘 믿는다. “사람이 꿈을 버리지 않으면, 그 꿈은 반드시 이루어진다.” 나는 야구인이다. 야구는 내 인생 그 자체였다. 지금도 라오스, 베트남, 캄보디아, 곧 진출할 인도네시아에 이르기까지, 대한민국의 선진야구를 전파하며 야구의 꿈을 이어가고 있다.

야구를 통해 참 많은 사랑을 받았다. 그 사랑을 사회에 조금이라도 돌려주고 싶었다. 발달장애인들도 야구를 하면 행복해질 수 있다고 믿었고, 이갑용 회장과 함께 이 일을 시작했다. 야구는 분명 이들의 삶에 희망의 등대가 될 수 있다. 처음의 작은 믿음은 전국에서 참가 문의가 올 정도로 성장했다.

이 대회의 슬로건은 **[두 팔 벌려 세상 속으로]**이다. 발달장애인들이 세상과 어우러질 수 있다는 가능성을 상징적으로 보여주는 말이다.

이번 대회는 ‘헐크파운데이션’이 주최하고, ‘한국발달장애인야구소프트볼협회’가 주관한다. 그리고 전통적인 야구가 아닌 티볼로 진행한다. 티볼은 투수 없이 고정된 공을 타자가 치는 방식으로, 규칙이 단순해 장애인과 비장애인이 함께 즐길 수 있기 때문이다.

나는 2022년, 애화학교에서 열린 시범경기에서 티볼이 발달장애인의 삶을 바꾸는 현장을 처음 목격했다. 이전까지 스포츠가 발달장애인에게 긍정적 영향을 줄 수 있으리라고는 미처 생각하지 못했다. 친구들과 뛰며 땀 흘리는 순간, 그들의 눈빛은 살아 있었다. 닫혀 있던 야구의 문이 열리고, 그 안에서 새로운 희망이 피어났다.

그 변화는 지금도 계속되고 있다. 매년 열리는 대회에서 우리는 자녀의 경기를 바라보며 눈시울을 붉히는 부모들을 만난다. “저렇게 웃는 모습은 처음 봅니다.” 한 어머니는 조용히 눈물을 훔쳤다. 아이가 세상과 소통하는 그 순간을 오랫동안 기다려왔기 때문일 것이다.

스포츠는 발달장애인에게 두 가지 큰 효용을 준다. 하나는 신체활동을 통해 균형을 되찾고 건강을 회복하는 것이다. 다른 하나는 신체 움직임을 통한 즐거움 속에서 정서와 지적 발달을 도모하는 것이다. 운동이 지능 발달에 긍정적인 영향을 준다는 연구도 있다.

발달장애인은 직업을 갖거나 독립적인 삶을 꾸리기 어렵기에 평생 가족이나 복지시설에 의존해야 하는 경우가 많다. 우리는 그들이 어떻게 사회의 일원으로 함께 살아갈 수 있을지를 끊임없이 고민하고 있다.

티볼을 통해 우리는 변화의 가능성을 보았다. 장애인들은 자발적으로 훈련에 임하고, 대회를 목표로 몸을 단련하며, 자신만의 꿈을 갖기 시작했다. 그 과정은 당사자뿐 아니라 가족, 사회, 그리고 국가에게도 깊은 울림을 주고 있다.

발달장애인도 우리 사회의 당당한 구성원이다. 여가활동과 사회참여는 이들에게도 당연한 권리다. 우리는 이 대회를 통해 “발달장애인도 할 수 있다”는 가능성을 보여주고, 모두가 함께 살아가는 길을 만들고자 한다.

‘헐크파운데이션’과 ‘한국발달장애인야구소프트볼협회’는 **[두 팔 벌려 세상 속으로]**라는 슬로건 아래, 발달장애인들이 스포츠를 통해 세상과 연결되고, 어울리며, 행복하게 살아가는 세상을 꿈꾼다.

마지막으로, 세상에 쉬운 일은 없다. 하지만 희망과 용기를 품고 시작하면, 생각지도 못한 기적 같은 일들이 일어난다. 티볼이 발달장애인 사회에 뿌리내리고, 이들의 삶을 바꾸는 그날까지 나는 열정으로 뛰고 또 뛸 것이다.

On Monday, May 30, 2025, the "3rd Lee Man-soo-bae Developmentally Disabled T-Ball Baseball Competition" will be held at the 191-26 Jeonho Life Baseball Stadium in Singok-ri, Gimpo-si, Gyeonggi-do.

It feels fresh to hear that it is already the third event of the championship. When I first started the championship, I had a lot of worries and misunderstandings. "Why are you doing that?" "Are you trying to use the disabled?" "What if there is an accident during the championship?" "If it's a one-off event, don't start it at all." Chairman Lee Kap-yong and the management staff were hurt a lot as they were the first chairman. These were times when I felt heavy because there was a misunderstanding about what I started the event with a good intention.

But I always believe, "If a man does not give up his dream, it must come true." I am a baseball player. Baseball was my life itself. Even now, Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia, where he will soon advance, continue his dream by spreading Korea's advanced baseball.

Through baseball, I received a lot of love. I wanted to return that love to society even a little. People with developmental disabilities believed that playing baseball could make them happy, and I started this work with Chairman Lee Kap-yong. Baseball can certainly be a lighthouse of hope in their lives. At first, small beliefs grew to the point where participation inquiries were made from all over the country.

The slogan of the contest is **[Into the world with open arms]**. It symbolizes the possibility that people with developmental disabilities can blend in with the world.

This competition is hosted by the Hulk Foundation and organized by the Korea Baseball Softball Association for the Developmentally Disabled. And it is not a traditional baseball but a T-ball. A T-ball is a method in which a batter hits a fixed ball without a pitcher, and the rules are simple so that disabled and non-disabled people can enjoy it together.

In 2022, I first witnessed the scene where T-ball changed the lives of people with developmental disabilities at an exhibition game at Ahwa School. Until now, I had never thought that sports could have a positive effect on people with developmental disabilities. The moment I played and sweated with my friends, their eyes were alive. The closed door of baseball opened, and new hope blossomed in it.

That change is still ongoing. In the annual contest, we meet parents who shed tears while watching their children's games. "I've never seen her smile like that before." One mother quietly wiped away her tears. It may be because the child has been waiting for a long time for the moment to communicate with the world.

Sports give two great utility to people with developmental disabilities. One is to restore balance and health through physical activity. The other is to promote emotional and intellectual development in pleasure through body movement. There are also studies showing that exercise has a positive effect on intelligence development.

People with developmental disabilities often have to rely on their families or welfare facilities for life because it is difficult to get a job or build an independent life. We are constantly thinking about how they can live together as members of society.

Through the T-ball, we saw potential for change. People with disabilities began to voluntarily train, train their bodies to aim for competitions, and have dreams of their own. The process resonates deeply not only for the person concerned, but also for the family, society, and the country.

People with developmental disabilities are also confident members of our society. Leisure activities and social participation are also natural rights for them. Through this competition, we want to show the possibility that "even people with developmental disabilities can do it" and create a way for everyone to live together.

The Hulk Foundation and the Korea Baseball Softball Association for People with Developmental Disabilities dream of a world where people with developmental disabilities connect, mingle, and live happily through sports under the slogan **[Into the world with open arms]**.

Finally, nothing is easy in the world. But when you start with hope and courage, unexpected miracles happen. Until the day the T-ball takes root in the society of the developmentally disabled and changes their lives, I will run and run with passion.
