리커버리 야구단이 창단이 된지도 어느덧 올해가 8년째가 된다. 리커버리야구단 창단과 함께 권혁돈감독과 한상훈감독은 지난 8년간 리커버리야구단을 감독과 코치로 선수들을 지도하고 있다.

노숙인들과 은둔형 외톨이들이 어떻게 야구를 할 수 있을까? 생각할 수도 있지만 이들에게는 야구하는 시간이 보약과도 같고 몸과 마음을 치유하는 시간과도 같다고 말한다. 실제로 야구훈련을 통해 이들이 복용하고 있는 약을 줄였다는 이야기를 들었을 때 얼마나 기쁘고 감사했는지 모른다.

작은 헌신이 누군가에게는 큰 힘으로 작용되고 있음이 너무 감사했다.

칭찬을 받아본지가 기억조차 나지 않는 사람들이 야구를 통해 칭찬을 받고 하이파이브를 하는 시간이 이들에게는 어떤 치료제보다 강한 효과를 보게 하였던 것이다.

리커버리야구단은 야구훈련만을 하는 것이 아니라 매년 가을 제주서귀포야구협회에서 리커버리 야구단을 초청해 친선경기 및 서귀포사회인야구팀과 합동훈련을 하며 넘치는 사랑과 격려를 받는 시간을 갖는다.

또한 올레길 산책, 고살리 숲길 탐방, 계곡 힐링 탐험 등 여러 프로그램을 풍성하게 경험하며 새로운 체험의 시간을 통해 그동안 경험하지 못한 행복한 추억을 만든다.

올해(2025년)도 제주캠프를 위해 서귀포야구협회, 제주 서귀포 브라더스야구단, 하례 2리 마을회에서 야구캠프 준비를 위해 애쓰고 있다. 제주야구캠프를 통해 삶의 즐거움과 행복을 주고 야구경기를 통해 서로 한 형제이고 이웃이라는 것을 배우는 시간을 갖는 것이다.

홈리스, 조현병 환자, 은둔형 외톨이, 알코올 중독자. 한국 사회에서 이들은 이웃이 아닌 ‘타자’로 여겨지는 대상이다. 사회로부터 소외된 이들을 사람들은 막연한 편견과 두려움을 갖고 대한다.

야구를 통해 이들의 자활을 돕고, 사회의 일원으로 함께할 수 있게 도울 수 있다면 어떨까? 생각 끝에 지난 2018년도에 김현일 대표가 창단한 사회인 야구단이 ‘리커버리 야구단’이다.

전국에 수많은 야구동호인 클럽이 있지만 리커버리 야구단은 아주 특별했다. 홈리스 청년들과 봉사자로 구성된 야구단으로서 스포츠가 홈리스의 회복에 어떤 영향이 있는지 궁금해 실험적인 시도로 만들어진 팀이기 때문이다.

다양한 계층의 도시빈민들에게 자활과 새로운 삶을 지원하는 ‘바하밥집’에서 준비한 홈리스 회복프로그램 중의 하나가 리커버리 야구단이다. 권혁돈 감독과, 한상훈 감독 두 후배가 ‘바하밥집’ 김현일 대표와 함께 자원봉사로 팀의 야구 지도를 맡게 되었다는 소식을 듣고 나도 동참하게 됐다.

올해도 리커버리 야구단이 매달 훈련한다. 올해 들어오자마자 여러가지 일과 사정으로 인해 리커버리 야구단 훈련에 참석하지 못했다. 이미 권혁돈 감독으로부터 여러번 연락이 왔지만 리커버리 야구단과 함께 하지 못해 늘 미안한 마음이다.

돌아오는 5월 23일 리커버리 야구단이 훈련한다며 몇일전에 권혁돈 감독으로부터 연락이 와 이번에는 꼭 선수들과 함께 하겠다며 약속을 했다. 집에서 동두천까지 무려 108킬로나 되는 먼 거리지만 리커버리 선수들과 권혁돈 감독 그리고 한상훈 감독을 만난다는 생각에 기쁘고 행복하다.

“ 포유동물로 아가미가 없는 고래는 수면으로 올라와 호흡하고 동료와도 교류한다. 몸에 문제가 생겨 활동이 어려워진 고래가 있으면 주변 고래가 등으로 밀어 수면까지 올려준다. 무탈한 고래가 아픈 개체의 생존을 돕는 것이다. 이런 고래의 지혜에 착안해 고립은둔청년(은둔형외톨이)과 자립준비청년(보호종료아동)의 사회적 자립을 지원하는 단체가 되었다. 지난 2014년 고립 청년 대상 공동생활 그룹홈으로 출범한 ㈔푸른고래 리커버리센터다. “

푸른고래리커버리센터는 ‘리커버리야구단’을 창립하여 운영하며 사회적·정서적으로 고립되었던 사람들이 점차 회복되고 고립에서 벗어나게 되는 긍정적인 사례를 많이 경험했다. 이러한 선순환 구조를 체계적으로 만들기 위해 2018년 하반기부터 5149야구리그를 만들어 시범리그를 운영하고 2019년 정식 리그를 만들고 올해 7년째가 되었다.

5149리그는 51%의 건강한 사람들이 49%의 도움이 필요한 사람들을 돕는다는 의미에서 시작되었다. 5149리그는 51%의 건강한 사람들이 각자의 재능을 기부하여 리커버리야구단을 도와 정서적으로 고통받고 고립된 청년들의 회복을 돕는 것이다.

5149리그를 통해 정신적·육체적으로 회복된 사람들이 또 다른 사람들의 회복을 돕고, 이러한 사회적 약자를 돕는 공동체 문화가 다른 여러 사회 분야에도 퍼져나갈 수 있도록 하는 설립 취지에 맞게 5149리그가 연착륙해서 정착되리라 기대된다.

바쁜 시간을 쪼개어 봉사하는 일에 앞장선 두 후배인 권혁돈 감독과 한상훈 감독이 자랑스럽고 , 이런 멋진 프로그램을 생각해 낸 < 바하밥집 >의 김현일 대표와 리커버리 김옥란 대표에게 야구인으로서 진심으로 감사하고 고맙다. 나 또한 앞으로 더 많은 관심을 가지고 리커버리 총재로서 이들과 오랫동안 함께 달려가려고 한다.

스포츠 중에 유독 야구만이 갖고 있는 '희생'의 용어를 사용하는 유일한 종목이다. 야구의 정신에 맞게 턱없이 부족하고 미약하지만 지금까지 받은 귀한 사랑을 흘려보내는 앞으로의 시간이 되기를 소망한다.

I don't know how happy and grateful I was when I heard that they reduced the drugs they were taking through baseball training.

I was so grateful that a small commitment was a great force for someone.

The time when people who can't even remember being praised were praised through baseball and high-fives were more effective than any other treatment for them.

The recovery baseball team does not only conduct baseball training, but also invites the recovery baseball team at the Jeju Seogwipo Baseball Association every fall to receive overflowing love and encouragement by conducting friendly games and joint training with the Seogwipo Community Baseball Team.

In addition, they experience various programs in abundance, such as walking Olle Road, exploring Gosali Forest Road, and exploring valley healing, and creating happy memories that have not been experienced before through a time of new experiences.

For this year (2025), Seogwipo Baseball Association, Seogwipo Brothers Baseball Team in Jeju, and the Harye 2-ri Village Association are also working hard to prepare for the baseball camp. Through the Jeju baseball camp, they give joy and happiness in life and have time to learn that each other is one brother and neighbor through baseball games.

Homeless, schizophrenic, reclusive loner, and alcoholic. In Korean society, they are considered 'others', not neighbors. People treat those who are alienated from society with vague prejudice and fear.

What if we could help them self-support through baseball and help them be together as members of society? After thinking about it, the "Recovery Baseball Team" was founded by CEO Kim Hyun-il in 2018.

There are many baseball clubs all over the country, but the Recovery Baseball Team was very special. This is because as a baseball team consisting of young homeless people and volunteers, it was made in an experimental attempt to wonder how sports affect the recovery of homelessness.

One of the homeless recovery programs prepared by the "Bahabab restaurant," which supports self-sufficiency and new life for urban poor from various walks of life, is the Recovery Baseball Team. When I heard that two juniors, Kwon Hyuk-don and Han Sang-hoon, volunteered to lead the team's baseball with Kim Hyun-il, CEO of "Bahab restaurant," I joined.

Recovery baseball team will train every month this year as well. As soon as he joined the team this year, he couldn't attend its training due to various work and circumstances. Kwon has already contacted me several times, but I always feel sorry for not being able to join the team.

On May 23, the recovery baseball team said it would train, and I got a call from Kwon Hyuk-don a few days ago and promised that I would be with the players this time. Although it is a long distance of 108 kilometers from my home to Dongducheon, I am happy and happy to meet the recovery players, Kwon Hyuk-don and Han Sang-hoon.

" Whales, which are mammals and do not have gills, come to the surface to breathe and interact with colleagues. If there are whales that have difficulty activities due to body problems, the whales around them push them to the surface of the water. Safe whales help sick individuals survive. Based on this whale's wisdom, it has become an organization that supports the social independence of young people who are isolated (hidden loner) and young people who are preparing for self-reliance (child who has ended protection). It is the ㈔ Blue Whale Recovery Center, which was launched in 2014 as a communal living group home for young people in isolation

The Blue Whale Recovery Center founded and operated the Recovery Baseball Team, and experienced many positive cases in which people who were socially and emotionally isolated gradually recovered and escaped isolation. In order to systematically create this virtuous cycle structure, the 5,149 baseball league was created from the second half of 2018 to operate the pilot league, and the official league was formed in 2019 and this year became the seventh year.

The 5,149 league began with the meaning that 51 percent of healthy people help 49 percent of people in need. The 5149 league is where 51 percent of healthy people donate their talents to help recovery teams and young people who are emotionally distressed and isolated.

It is expected that the 5,149 league will be settled by a soft landing in line with the purpose of establishing a community culture that helps people who have recovered mentally and physically through the 5,149 league to help others recover and help the socially underprivileged spread to other social fields.

I am proud of my two juniors, Kwon Hyuk-don and Han Sang-hoon, who took the lead in volunteering by taking time out of their busy schedule, and I am truly grateful and grateful as a baseball player to Kim Hyun-il and Kim Ok-ran, the representatives of "Bajab Restaurant", who came up with such a wonderful program. I also intend to run with them for a long time as President of Recovery with more interest in the future.

It is the only sport that uses the term "sacrifice" that baseball has only. It is extremely insufficient and weak to fit the spirit of baseball, but I hope it will be a time to let go of the precious love I have received so far.
