한국 야구를 이야기할 때 이승엽 선수의 이름을 빼놓을 수 없다. 그는 성실함과 겸손함, 실력까지 겸비한, 누구나 인정할 수밖에 없는 선수다. 같은 이유로 박찬호 선수도 자주 언급된다. 두 사람 모두 선수로서뿐 아니라 은퇴 이후에도 타의 모범이 되는 삶을 살아가고 있다. 한 명은 메이저리그에서, 한 명은 KBO 리그와 일본프로야구에서, 각자의 자리에서 한국 야구를 대표했다.

이승엽 선수는 내가 삼성 라이온즈에서 선수 생활을 하던 시절, 갓 입단한 신인이었다. 나와는 무려 18년의 나이 차이가 있었지만, 어린 후배의 태도와 기량은 이미 남다르게 느껴졌다. 경북고 재학 시절부터 투타 모두에서 탁월한 재능을 보여준 이승엽은, 입단 당시부터 구단 내에서 투수로 키울 것인지, 타자로 육성할 것인지를 놓고 많은 고민을 낳게 했다. 결국 구단은 타자로의 전향을 결정했고, 이는 이승엽 개인은 물론 팀의 미래에도 가장 현명한 선택이 되었다.

처음 그를 본 건 미국 플로리다의 베로비치에서 열린 스프링캠프였다. 신인 선수로는 이례적으로 1군 캠프에 합류한 그는 수비와 타격에서 모두 인상적인 모습을 보였다. 특히 타격 훈련을 지켜보며 “정말 20살이 맞나” 하는 의문이 들 정도였다. 정교함과 파워를 동시에 갖춘 그의 타격은 분명 특별했다.

하지만 내가 이승엽 선수를 좋아하게 된 가장 큰 이유는 실력보다 인성에 있었다. 그는 어린 나이에도 불구하고 항상 선배들의 말을 경청했고, 어떠한 지시에도 불평이 없었다. 그런 태도는 시간이 지나 스타가 되고 나서도 변하지 않았다. 많은 후배들이 성장하면서 변화하거나 흐트러지는 경우를 봐왔기에, 그의 일관된 성품은 더 특별하게 다가왔다.

이승엽 선수는 야구 외적으로도 늘 모범이었다. 가족을 소중히 여기고, 팬과 동료, 야구계를 향한 예의와 책임감을 잃지 않았다. 많은 시간이 흘렀지만, 나는 여전히 그를 떠올릴 때마다 야구가 참 좋은 스포츠라는 생각을 한다. 그렇게 후배 한 명의 존재가, 야구 인생을 자랑스럽게 만들어주는 순간들이 있다.

이승엽 선수의 타격 스타일은 '레그킥' 타법으로 대표된다. 왼손 타자로서 무게 중심을 실으며 다리를 들어올리는 이 방식은, 같은 레그킥이라 해도 왕정치 선수, 추신수 선수와는 다른 특징을 가진다. 왕정치 선수는 한 다리를 높이 들고 중심을 오래 유지하는 '외다리'에 가까운 타법이고, 추신수 선수는 비교적 간결하고 따라 하기 쉬운 동작을 사용한다. 반면 이승엽 선수의 타격은 고난도 기술의 집약체다. 타이밍, 무게 이동, 스윙 궤도까지 세밀하게 조율돼야만 가능한 폼이다.

현역 시절, 나는 이승엽 선수의 타격을 멀리서 지켜보다가 훈련 후 집에 돌아와 그의 동작을 따라 해보곤 했다. 이미 오래된 습관으로 몸에 밴 내 스윙을 바꾸는 일은 쉽지 않았지만, 더 잘하고 싶은 마음은 나이와 상관없이 뜨거웠다. 그래서 어린 선수들에게 타격폼을 이야기할 때마다, 무엇보다 중요한 시기가 초등학교와 중학교 시절이라는 사실을 강조하게 된다.

타자는 저마다 체형, 감각, 리듬이 다르다. 잘하는 타자의 폼을 무작정 따라 하기보다, 자기 스타일로 소화해내는 것이 중요하다. 레그킥은 파워를 얻을 수 있는 방법이지만, 그만큼 고도의 기술이 필요하다. 중심 이동과 착지 타이밍, 스윙의 궤적과 인내심 등, 겉으로 보이는 동작 이상으로 복합적인 요소들이 작용한다. 이승엽 선수는 그 모든 요소들을 오랜 시간 다듬어 자신만의 스타일로 완성해냈다.

나는 미국에서 10년 넘게 생활하며, 메이저리그 선수들이 기술과 노하우를 공유하는 문화에도 깊은 인상을 받았다. 그들은 아무리 많은 정보를 나눠도, 결국 자기 것이 아니면 똑같이 할 수 없다는 사실을 잘 알고 있었다. 기술은 흉내 내는 것이 아니라 자기 안에서 익혀내는 것이다.

이승엽 선수의 타격은 그래서 누구나 따라 하고 싶어 하면서도, 누구도 완전히 따라 할 수 없는 독창적인 영역이다. 하지만 그의 성실함과 태도는 누구든 본받을 수 있다. 지금도 후배들에게 이승엽 선수 이야기를 자주 한다. 훌륭한 선수 이전에 훌륭한 사람이었고, 지금도 그러하다고.

야구 인생 55년을 걸어오면서, 수많은 후배를 만났다. 그 중에서도 이승엽 선수는 늘 내 마음 한켠에 깊이 자리한 이름이다. 그리고 그 이름은 언제나 나를 야구인으로서 자랑스럽게 만들어준다.

When talking about Korean baseball, Lee Seung-yeop's name is a must-have item. He is a player that everyone can only recognize, as he combines sincerity, humility and skills. This is why Park Chan-ho is often mentioned. Both of them are leading role models not only as players but also after retirement. One represented Korean baseball in the Major League and the other in the KBO League and the Japanese Professional Baseball in their respective positions.

Lee Seung-yeop was a rookie when I was playing for the Samsung Lions. Although he was 18 years younger than me, his attitude and skills were already different. Lee, who has shown outstanding talent in both pitching and hitting since he was a student at Kyungpook High School, has made me think a lot about whether to raise him as a pitcher or a batter within the club since joining the team. In the end, the club decided to turn to a batter, making it the smartest choice not only for Lee but also for the team's future.

The first time I saw him was at Vero Beach in Florida. As he joined the first team camp, which is unusual for a rookie player, he showed impressive performance both in defense and batting. Notably, while watching the batting training, I wondered if he was really 20 years old. Equipped with sophistication and power at the same time, his batting was definitely special.

However, the biggest reason I fell in love with Lee was not his ability but his personality. Despite his young age, he always listened to his seniors, and he did not complain about any instructions. His attitude did not change as time passed and he became a star. His consistent personality came to him more special, as he had seen many juniors change or become disorganized as they grew up.

Lee Seung-yeop was always an example outside of baseball. He cherished his family and did not lose his courtesy and responsibility toward his fans, colleagues, and the baseball community. Many years have passed, but I still think baseball is a very good sport whenever I think of him. There are moments when the presence of one junior makes me proud of my baseball life.

Lee's batting style is represented by the "leg kick" batting style. As a left-handed batter, Lee raises his leg while loading the center of gravity, which is different from Wang Jeong-gi and Choo Shin-soo's. Wang is a one-legged skater who holds one leg high and maintains balance for a long time, while Choo Shin-soo uses relatively simple and easy-to-follow motions. In contrast, Lee's batting is a combination of high-level techniques. This form will be possible only when the timing, weight movement, and swing trajectory are precisely coordinated.

When I was active, I watched Lee Seung-yeop's batting from a distance and then returned home after training to copy his movements. It was not easy to change my swing, which had already been worn by an old habit, but my desire to do better was hot regardless of my age. So whenever I talk about my batting form to young players, I emphasize the fact that the most important period is elementary and middle school.

Each batter has a different body shape, sense, and rhythm. Rather than blindly imitating the form of a good hitter, it is important to digest it in your own style. Leg kicks are a way to gain power, but that requires a high level of skill. Complex factors work more than just visible movements, such as center movement and landing timing, swing trajectory and patience. Lee Seung-yeop completed all of those elements in his own style by trimming them for a long time.

After living in the United States for over 10 years, I was also impressed by the culture in which Major League Baseball players shared their skills and know-how. They were well aware that no matter how much information they shared, they could not do the same unless it was their own. Technology is not about imitation, but about learning within yourself.

This is why everyone wants to imitate Lee's batting, but no one can completely imitate it. However, anyone can imitate Lee's sincerity and attitude. I often talk about Lee to my juniors. He was and still is a great person before he was a great player.

In my 55 years of baseball life, I met many juniors. Among them, Lee Seung-yeop is a name that is always deep in my heart. And that name always makes me proud as a baseball player.
