〈양준혁, 야구장을 넘어선 사나이〉

양준혁 선수는 나의 모교, 대구상고 출신이다. 대구상고를 졸업하고 영남대학교를 거쳐 1993년 삼성 라이온즈에 입단했다. 그해부터 프로야구계에 ‘양준혁’이라는 이름이 깊이 새겨지기 시작했다.

삼성 유니폼을 입고 처음 그 모습을 보았을 때, 단번에 시선이 쏠렸다. 체격부터가 다르다. 마치 메이저리그에서 건너온 듯한 당당한 실루엣이 그라운드를 가득 채웠다. 넓은 어깨, 강한 팔, 균형 잡힌 몸놀림은 국내에서는 보기 힘든 신체 조건이었다. 그러나 그를 진정으로 특별하게 만든 건, 체격만큼이나 눈을 사로잡은 타격이었다.

특히, '만세 타법'은 그만의 독특한 상징이 되었다. 팔을 높이 들어올리며 방망이를 휘두를 때, 공은 하늘을 찢는 듯한 비거리와 속도로 날아갔다. 타격의 순간, 방망이와 공이 만나는 소리에서부터 느껴지는 폭발적인 에너지는 그 어떤 선수가 흉내 낼 수 없는 강렬한 인상을 남겼다. 양준혁 선수의 타격을 보고 있으면, 단순한 힘이 아니라, 몸의 모든 부위가 조화를 이루며 공을 날리는 모습을 볼 수 있었다. 그의 스윙은 타고난 유연성과 완벽한 타이밍이 결합된 예술이었다.

경산 볼파크에서 날린 공은 가끔 도로를 넘어 자동차 유리를 깨뜨리기도 했다. 그만큼 공의 비거리는 상상 이상이었다. 사람들은 단순히 '대단하다'는 말을 넘어서, 양준혁의 타격을 하나의 경험으로 기억했다. 그리고 양준혁 선수의 체격만큼이나 빠른 발놀림에 팬들은 또 한 번 놀라지 않을 수 없었다. 덩치가 크다고 느릴 것이라 생각할 수 있지만, 팀 내에서도 주력은 손에 꼽힐 만큼 빠른 편이었다. 1루를 향해 전력 질주하는 모습에서 느껴지는 진심과 근성은, 관중석에서도 뚜렷이 전해졌다. 거대한 몸을 이끌고 흙먼지를 날리며 달리는 모습은 마치 야구에 온 생을 던지는 사람처럼 보였다.
 
무엇보다 인상 깊었던 건, 야구 외적인 면에서도 뚜렷한 개성을 지녔다는 점이다. 대부분의 운동선수들이 수줍음이 많고 말수가 적은 반면, 양준혁 선수는 유쾌한 입담과 재치로 분위기를 이끌었다. 임기응변에도 능했고, 낯가림 없이 사람들을 편하게 대하는 성격이었다.

그 다채로운 재능은 은퇴 후 더 확실히 빛을 발했다. 방송 프로그램에서 자연스럽게 자리 잡았고, 예능감은 예상 이상이었다. 무대 위에서, 마이크 앞에서, 자신을 감추지 않고 드러내는 솔직함과 유쾌함. 현역 시절보다 더 많은 이들이 양준혁이라는 사람을 새롭게 알아가기 시작했다.

사업가로서의 감각도 예사롭지 않았다. 은퇴 후 진로를 두고 방황하는 이들이 적지 않은 현실 속에서, 스스로의 길을 주도적으로 열어가는 모습이 인상 깊었다. 기획력과 추진력, 그리고 뚝심까지 겸비해 야구장 밖에서도 확고한 궤도를 만들어냈다.

이처럼 다양한 영역에서 두각을 나타냈지만, 가장 놀라운 건 변함없는 태도다. 나와는 10년 가까이 나이 차이가 있지만, 언제나 성실했고 자기 자리를 지키는 자세가 흐트러짐 없었다. 선수로서, 방송인으로서, 사업가로서 성공을 거뒀지만, 들뜨거나 거만한 기색은 찾아보기 어려웠다.

나는 그의 능력을 그라운드에서 다시 보고 싶다는 생각을 줄곧 했었다. 그리고 그 마음이 행동으로 이어졌던 순간이 있다. 2012년, 내가 SK 와이번스 감독으로 있던 시절. 양준혁 선수의 타격 노하우가 너무도 아깝게 느껴져 직접 타격코치 제안을 했었다. 단순히 명성이 아까워서가 아니라, 현장에 정말 필요한 자질을 지닌 인재였기 때문이다.

요즘도 가끔 만나 대화를 나누다 보면, 여전히 그라운드를 그리워하는 마음이 고스란히 전해진다. 누군가는 “이제는 나이가 들었다”고 말할지 모르지만, 나는 그렇게 생각하지 않는다. 진짜 기술과 통찰은 세월을 타지 않는다. 녹슬지 않은 노하우와 경험, 후배들을 아우르는 리더십은 지금도 빛나고 있다.

언젠가 유니폼을 다시 입고 현장에 선다면, 그 이름은 또 한 번, 팬들의 가슴을 뜨겁게 할 것이다. 양준혁은 언제나, 야구장을 넘어 빛나는 사나이니까.


                                                                        "Yang Junhyuk, A Man Beyond the Ballpark"

Yang Jun-hyuk is from my alma mater, Daegu Sang High School. After graduating from Daegu Sang High School, he went to Yeungnam University and joined the Samsung Lions in 1993. The name "Yang Jun-hyuk" began to be deeply engraved in the professional baseball world that year.

When I first saw him wearing a Samsung uniform, my eyes were on him. He has a different physique. His imposing silhouette filled the ground as if he were from a major league team. Wide shoulders, strong arms, and well-balanced movements were rare physical conditions in Korea. What really made him special, however, was his eye-catching strike as much as his physique.

In particular, the 'manse batting' became his own unique symbol. When he lifted his arms high and swung his bat, the ball flew at a flying distance and speed that seemed to rip through the sky. The explosive energy felt from the sound of the bat and the ball meeting at the moment of the strike left an intense impression that no player could imitate. Looking at Yang's batting, he could see all parts of his body flying the ball in harmony, not just strength. His swing was an art that combined natural flexibility and perfect timing.

The ball that was thrown at Gyeongsan Ballpark sometimes crossed the road and broke the car's glass. As such, the flying distance of the ball was beyond imagination. Beyond simply saying "great," people remembered Yang Jun-hyuk's strike as an experience. And fans were once again surprised by his fast footwork as Yang Jun-hyuk's physique. You might think he was slow as he was, but even within the team, he focused very quickly. The sincerity and grit felt from the sprint toward the first base were clearly conveyed in the audience. He seemed to throw his whole life into baseball when he ran with his huge body flying dust.

What impressed me most is that he has a distinct personality outside of baseball. While most athletes were shy and reticent, Yang Jun-hyuk led the atmosphere with his pleasant talking and wit. He was good at improvising and was a person who treated people comfortably without being shy.

The colorful talent shone more clearly in retirement. It naturally established itself in broadcast programs, and the sense of entertainment was more than expected. On stage, in front of a microphone, the candor and delightfulness of revealing oneself without hiding. More people have begun to get to know Yang Joon-hyuk anew than during his active days.

His sense of being an entrepreneur was also unusual. It was impressive to see him taking the initiative in opening his own path amid the reality that many people are wandering about after retirement. He has created a solid trajectory outside the ballpark by combining planning, driving force, and toughness.

Although he has stood out in such various areas, the most surprising thing is his unwavering attitude. Although there is a difference of nearly 10 years in age from me, he has always been sincere and has not been disturbed in his attitude to keep his position. He has succeeded as a player, broadcaster, and businessman, but it has been difficult to find any signs of excitement or arrogance.

I had always thought that I wanted to see his ability on the ground again. And there was a moment when that heart led to action. In 2012, when I was the head coach of the SK Wyverns. I felt that Yang Jun-hyuk's batting know-how was such a waste, so I personally suggested the batting coach. It's not just because he was a waste of fame, but because he was a talent with the qualities he really needed in the field.

Even these days, when we meet and talk from time to time, the feeling of missing the ground is still conveyed. Someone might say, "I'm old now," but I don't think so. Real skills and insights don't age. His know-how, experience, and leadership that encompasses his juniors are still shining.

One day, if you wear your uniform again on the set, the name will heat up the hearts of fans once again. Yang is always a man who shines beyond the ballpark.
