< 이들의 함성이 들리는가? >

제 3회 이만수배 발달장애인 티볼야구대회가 끝난지 하루 지났다. 이번 대회를 통해 선수들과 임원진 그리고 학부형들과 함께 어울려 그라운드에서 함성 지르고 뛰어 다니는 모습을 보며 어디선가 모르는 뭉클한 마음이 든다. 지금도 대회의 여운이 사라지지 않고 있다.

이번 대회를 보면서 스텝진들은 선수들이 함성을 지르고 활짝 웃으며 달리는 모습을 보며 계속 눈물을 흘린다. 현장에서 보지 않고서는 아무리 글을 써도 이들의 감정과 표현을 느낄 수 없었을 것이다. 주체할 수 없는 눈물을 흘리며 감격하는 모습에 나 또한 가슴이 뭉클하면서 눈가가 촉촉해진다.

이번 대회를 치루면서 깜짝 놀란 것은 해가 거듭 될수록 대회 규모나 참가하는 팀 그리고 선수들과 동참하는 임원 및 학부형과 스폰서가 많아 졌다. 제 3회 이만수배 발달장애인 티볼야구대회에 참가한 선수들과 임원들 그리고 학부형들이 족히 500명이 훨씬 넘을것 같다.

경기가 치열해 질수록 선수들과 스텝진들이 서로 양쪽 팀에서 함성을 지르는데 꼭 잠실야구장에 나온 느낌이다. 이들이 언제 이렇게 함성을 지르며 환하게 웃는 모습을 보겠는가? 현장에 있지 않으면 이들의 해맑은 웃음과 즐거운 마음을 이해할 수 없을 것이다. 이날 만큼은 이들의 날이다.

야구장 두군데에서 한쪽은 중증 선수들만 경기를 치루고 매인 구장에서는 경증 선수와 경계선 선수들이 게임을 한다. 양쪽을 번가라 다니면서 구경했는데 중증 선수들이 티볼 경기를 할 때는 전적으로 선생님과 함께 경기를 한다. 수비할 때도 선생님이 선수들과 함께 하면서 수비를 한다. 타격할 때는 선수가 타격하면 곧바로 선생님이 선수의 손을 잡고 1루로 달린다. 야구 경험이 많이 있지 않은 여성 선수는 타격하고 선생님이 미처 손을 잡지 못한 사이 1루로 달리는 것이 아니라 3루로 달려 경기하는 선수들이나 선생님 그리고 스텝진들이 배를 잡고 넘어간다.

이번 대회에 처음 출전한 광주광역시 동구 'E.T(East Tigers)야구단'이 첫 전국 무대에서 우승을 거두었다. 광주광역시 동구 E.T 팀이 첫 출전했지만 그들의 실력은 족히 대한민국 발달장애인 티볼야구 팀들 중에서 세손가락 안에 들 정도로 정말 뛰어난 실력을 갖추었다. 서울의 호산나대학과 대전 팀 그리고 광주의 E.T 팀이 아마 쌍벽을 이루지 않을까? 생각한다.

특히 광주광역시 동구 E.T 팀은 임택 동구청장님의 열정적인 헌신과 후원 그리고 E.T 팀의 구단주로 활동하며 발달장애인들이 사회의 한 일원으로서 함께 할 수 있도록 많은 것들을 배려한다고 한다. 임택 동구청장님이 얼마나 열정적인 분이면 이번 대회에 참가하기 위해 광주에서 서울까지 선수들과 함께 버스를 타고 올라왔다.

대회가 끝난지 하루가 지났지만 지금도 주위 사람들에게 이야기를 듣고 있고 특히, 전국에서 많은 문의 전화가 오고 있다. 발달장애인 부모님들로부터 직접 전화가 걸려오고 또 전국에 있는 특수학교 선생님과 교육청 그리고 동사무소와 구청에서 이들을 도와주고 다음에는 자원봉사 하고 싶고 또 경기에 출전하고 싶다며 연락이 끊이지 않고 오고 있다.

대회를 열면서 늘 강조하는 것이 발달장애인들이 티볼을 통해 여가활동 기회를 넓히고 지역사회와의 소통을 촉진하기 위한 취지로 마련했다. 대회 슬로건인 '두 팔 벌려 세상 속으로'는 폐쇄적인 환경을 벗어나 장애인이 지역사회 일원으로 함께 더불어 살아갈 수 있는 길을 열어주기 위함이다.

야구는 누구에게나 열려 있다. 그리고 장애가 있어도, 국적이 달라도, 마음만 있다면 누구나 함께 할 수 있는 스포츠다. 이번 대회를 통해 발달장애인들이 더 큰 자신감과 사회적 소속감을 느낄 수 있길 바란다. 장애인들이나 비장애인들도 모두가 한 형제 자매라는 것을 잊지 않았으면 한다.

모든 대회와 행사를 다 끝내고 이번 대회를 위해 고생한 스텝진들과 가까운 식당에 가서 뒤풀이 했다. 이번 대회와 과정까지 서로 삼삼오오 모여 식사하며 재미있는 시간을 가졌다. 가볍게 한잔씩 하며 좋은 시간을 보내고 있는데 갑자기 이화성 대표님이 나의 사인볼을 보이며 경매에 들어갔다.

'이만수 감독님의 사인볼 하나에 10만원에 살 사람이 있느냐?'며 경매에 들어갔다. 경매가 시작되자마자 여기저기서 사겠다는 사람들이 손을 드는데 무려 30개를 팔았다. 그 자리에서 300만원 팔았다며 발달장애인티볼야구협회에 그대로 입금 시키겠단다. 이날 스텝진들과 늦은 시간까지 함께 하면서 좋은 시간을 보냈다.

2021년 가을에 마음을 서로 투합해 시작했던 일들이 어느 누구도 예상하지 못했던 위대한 대회가 되었고 또 발달장애인 선수들 뿐만 아니라 이들과 한몸으로 함께 했던 봉사자와 선생님 그리고 부모님들이 있었기에 가능한 일이었다.

나는 한평생 야구를 위해 달려왔다. 어느덧 야구한지 55년이 되었다. 야구를 갖고 세상에 기쁨을 줄 수 있고 그들에게 꿈과 희망을 전달할 수 있다는 것 하나로 나는 이 세상에 태어나 성공한 삶을 살아가고 있음을 고백하지 않을 수가 없다.

발달장애인 티볼야구대회가 앞으로도 많이 개최되어 이들에게 기쁨과 희망이 되길 기원한다.

A day has passed since the 3rd Lee Man-soo's T-ball competition for developmentally disabled people ended. Through this competition, I feel touched to see players, executives, and parents running around shouting and running on the ground. Even now, the lingering effects of the competition are still lingering.

While watching the competition, the staff members kept shedding tears as they watched the athletes shout and run with a big smile. No matter how many letters they write, they would have been unable to feel their emotions and expressions without watching them on the site. I was also moved and tearful at the sight of tears that I could not control.

What surprised me during this tournament was that the size of the tournament, the teams that participate, and the number of executives, parents and sponsors who participated with the players increased over the years. There are likely to be far more than 500 players, executives, and parents who participated in the 3rd Lee Man-soo-bae Developmentally Disabled T-Ball Baseball Competition.

As the game gets fiercer, players and staff members shout from both teams, and it feels like they are at Jamsil Baseball Stadium. When will they see them shout and smile brightly like this? If you are not in the field, you will not be able to understand their bright smiles and joy. This day is their day.

In two ballparks, only severely ill players play on one side, while mild and borderline players play on the other side. I went around the two sides to watch, but when severely ill players are playing T-ball, they play entirely with the teacher. When defending, the teacher plays defense with the players. When hitting, when a player hits, the teacher immediately holds the player's hand and runs to the first base. Female players who do not have much baseball experience hit the ball and run to the third base without the teacher's hand, but the players, teachers, and staff members who run to the third base grab the boat and fall over.

The East Tigers (E.T.) baseball team in Dong-gu, Gwangju, which participated in this competition for the first time, won its first national championship. The Dong-gu E.T. team in Gwangju Metropolitan City participated for the first time, but their skills were truly outstanding, making them one of only three among the developmentally disabled T-ball teams in Korea. Hosanna University in Seoul, Daejeon Team, and Gwangju E.T Team probably form a double wall, I think.

In particular, the E.T. team in Dong-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, is said to consider many things so that people with developmental disabilities can be together as a member of society, with the passionate dedication and support of Lim Taek, the head of Dong-gu, and the owner of the E.T. team. How passionate Lim Taek is, the head of Dong-gu District Office, came up with a bus from Gwangju to Seoul with the players to participate in this competition.

It's been a day since the competition ended, but I'm still hearing from people around me, especially from all over the country. Parents with developmental disabilities have called directly, and special school teachers, education offices, and district offices across the country have been contacting them constantly, saying they want to volunteer next time and participate in the game.

It is always emphasized during the competition to expand opportunities for people with developmental disabilities to engage in leisure activities through T-ball and promote communication with local communities. The slogan of the competition, "Into the World with Open Your Arms," is to open the way for the disabled to live together as members of the community, away from the closed environment.

Baseball is open to anyone. And it is a sport that anyone can play with, regardless of disability or nationality. Through this competition, I hope that people with developmental disabilities will feel greater confidence and social belonging. I hope the disabled and non-disabled people will not forget that everyone is one brother and sister.

After finishing all the competitions and events, we went to a restaurant close to the staff members who worked hard for this competition and had an after party. We had a fun time eating together in groups until this competition and process. While we were having a light drink and having a good time, suddenly CEO Lee Hwa-sung showed my autograph ball and went to the auction.

The auction went on, asking, "Does anyone want to buy a signed ball of Lee Man-soo for 100,000 won?" As soon as the auction began, people raised their hands to buy it here and there, and they sold a whopping 30. They said they sold 3 million won on the spot, adding that they will make the deposit to the T-Ball Association for the Developmentally Disabled. I had a great time with the staff members until late at night.

What started in the fall of 2021 with our hearts together became a great competition that no one expected, and it was possible because not only athletes with developmental disabilities but also volunteers, teachers, and parents who were with them as one body.

I've been running for baseball all my life. It's already been 55 years since I played baseball. Having baseball and being able to give joy to the world and deliver dreams and hopes to them, I can't help but confess that I was born in this world and have a successful life.

We hope that many T-ball baseball tournaments for people with developmental disabilities will be held in the future, giving them joy and hope.
