연천 미라클 야구팀의 이해성 단장으로부터 올해 여러번 연락이 왔다. 김인식 감독과 코치 그리고 선수들과 좋은 시간을 한번 가져 주었으면 좋겠다며 연락이 온 것이다. 올해도 해외로 전국으로 다니다보니 좀처럼 시간이 나지 않았는데 마침 발달장애인티볼야구대회가 끝나는 다음날 시간이 되어 이해성 단장님한테 연락해 5월 31일 만나기로 약속을 정했다.

연천 미라클 야구팀은 독립리그에서 독보적인 팀이다. 매년 통합우승을 하듯이 모든 대회에서 우승을 차지했다. 올해도 벌써 'KBO 드림컵' 대회에서 우승을 했다. 이해성 단장님의 주선으로 31일 서울 합정동 일식집에서 미팅을 가졌다. 이날 김인식 감독과 노찬엽 코치 그리고 선수들을 만나 맛난 것 먹으면서 많은 대화를 나누었다.

김인식 선배는 1982년 프로야구 초창기 시절 서울을 홈 팀으로 갖고 있던 MBC 청룡 시절부터 선의의 경쟁을 했던 선배다. 세월이 흘렀음에도 불구하고 여전히 지금까지 서로 연락하고 좋은 관계로 지내고 있다.

연천 미라클 야구팀의 이해성 단장은 김인식 감독과는 둘도 없는 친구 사이다. 그런데 이해성 단장님의 해박한 야구 지식을 듣고 솔직히 야구인으로서 놀라지 않을 수가 없었다. 얼마나 해박한 지식을 갖고 있으면 프로야구 초창기 시절부터 중요한 경기를 다 기억하고 있다.

특히 공학도라 그런지 타격에 대해서도 일각을 갖고 있는 분이었다. 한 예로 프로야구 초창기 때만 해도 우리나라프로야구는 전형적인 일본프로야구를 그대로 전수 받았던 시절이다. 그 당시 유행했던 것이 도끼타법이다. 그런데 이해성 단장은 그당시 왜 타자들이 한결 같이 모두가 도끼 타법을 하는지 이해할 수가 없다며 친구인 김인식 감독한테 여러번 이야기 했다고 한다.

공학도였던 이해성 단장님은 과학적으로도 위에서 내려오는 볼을 위에서 도끼타법을 하게 되면 맞는 타점이 없기 때문에 좋은 타격을 할 수 없다며 칠순이 훨씬 넘으신 분이 식당에서 일어서서 타격 시범을 보이시는 것이다. 이 광경을 보고 있던 연천 미라클 선수들이 입을 벌리면서 집중한다.

이때부터 옛날 우리나라프로야구 초창기 시절부터 이야기가 시작이 되는데 끊이지 않고 무려 퇴근시간까지 이야기가 이어졌다. 거기다가 김인식 선배가 MBC 청룡 시절 삼성라이온즈 팀과 경기할 때 '만수가 포수로 앉아 있으면 그놈의 입담으로 인해 얼마나 힘이 들었는지 모른다'며 이야기 한다.

그러면서 김인신 선배가 '이만수의 입담은 정말 놀라울 정도로 대단했다'며 옛날 이야기 하는데 젊은 연천 미라클 선수들이 입을 다물지 못하고 옆에서 듣는다. 김인식 선배가 한번은 이런 일이 있었다며 선수들에게 이야기 한다. 타석에 들어서는데 또다시 이만수가 입담을 하기 시작해 도저히 타격할 수 없어 '야~새** 하며 야구 배트로 나를 그대로 때렸다' 이로 인해 양 팀 선수들이 그라운드로 나와 밴치클리어닝이 벌어졌던 기억이 있다며 이야기 하는데 미라클 선수들이 재미있다며 웃는 것이다.

한방 맞은 내가 너무 화가 나서 심판한테 항의하니깐 그당시 모든 심판들은 자기 편이라며 퇴장 안 당했다는 것이다. 요즘 시대에서는 상상도 할 수 없는 일이지만 그당시에는 이런 일이 비일비재 했던 시절이다.

프로야구 초창기 시절 김인식 선수하면 현역 때는 안타를 못 치면 맞고라도 나가겠다고 노골적으로 홈 플레이트 쪽으로 바짝 붙는 투지 넘치는 자세, 공을 맞고 나면 '왜 나를 맞추느냐?'를 진심으로 표현하는 그 표정연기가 트레이드 마크였으며, 더불어 그렇게 온갖 엄살 속에 1루로 나가서는 번잡스레 도루를 할듯말듯 깔짝거리고 투수의 신경을 긁어대는 플레이 스타일 때문에 당시의 타 팀 팬들에겐 상당한 비호감 이미지였다.

미라클 선수들에게 김인식 감독이 현역시절 이런 스타일이기 때문에 나의 입이 가만히 있겠느냐? 그래서 김인식 선배가 타석에 들어오면 나의 입이 모타 달린것처럼 쉬지 않고 떠들어 대기 시작했던 기억이 있다며 선수들에게 이야기 했더니 선수들이 깔깔 거리며 넘어간다.

곧이어 김인식 선배와 이해성 단장님이 1983년 장명부에게 3연속 몸에 맞는 공을 얻어 맞으며 벤치 클리어링을 이끌어 내기도 할 정도로 악바리 근성을 갖졌던 비하인드를 이야기 한다.. 김인식 선배가 장명부 투수에게 3연속으로 몸에 맞아 화가 나 마운드로 달려가 장명부 투수를 잡는데 꼼짝도 하지 않더라는 것이다. 그런데 문제는 그당시 밴치클리어링에 대해 잘 모르던 시절이라 혼자 마운드에 올라 갔다가 내려왔단다. 이야기를 듣던 선수들이 배를 잡고 넘어간다.

김인식 선배가 프로야구 초창기 시절의 이야기 하는데 이야기가 끝이 없다. 특히 이해창 선수와 김일곤 선수 그리고 이종도 선수와 김유동 선수 이선희 투수와 황규봉 투수에 대해서도 너무 잘 알고 있다. 거기다가 먼저 하늘나라로 간 장효조 선수와 최동원 투수 더 많은 이야기 나누었지만 여기에 열거하기에는 지면이 부족할 정도다.

김인식 선배는 MBC 청룡 시절, 꾸준함과 근성으로 한 시대를 살아간 선수였다. 아파서 출전하지 못하는 경기가 없을 정도로 자신과 팀을 위해 끝까지 헌신한 선수였다. 그리고 김인식 선배의 현역 시절 별명은 작은 키와 거무잡잡한 피부 때문에 붙은 별명이 '베트콩'이다.

별명을 듣고 있던 이해성 단장님이 선수들에게 '김인식 감독의 진짜 별명을 알고 있느냐?' 물론 대표적인 별명이 '베트콩'이지만 김인식 감독의 진짜 별명은 따로 있다며 이야기 한다. 김인식 감독이 어린시절부터 친구들에게 붙혀진 별명은 '꼴뚜기'란다.

어떻게 해서 '꼴뚜기'가 되었으냐? 하면 옛날 어린시절 어머님이 새우젓을 팔아서 생계를 이어가던 시절이라 어린시절부터 '꼴뚜기'라는 별명을 갖게 되었다고 한다. 이해성 단장님은 김인식 선배와 어린시절부터 한 동네에서 같이 살았기 때문에 김인식 선배에 대한 비하인드 스토리에 대해 너무 잘 알고 있다.

김인식 선배가 어린시절부터 프로야구 초창기 시절까지 이야기 하는데 시간이 얼마나 빨리 지나가는지 퇴근시간이 되었다. 더 많이 이야기 나누고 싶었지만 퇴근시간이 되어 더 있다가는 인천에 갈 수 없을 것 같아 다음에 또 만나기로 약속하고 헤어졌다.

앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 MBC청룡 팀과의 경기를 할 때면 늘 선배님한테 내가 입버릇처럼 했던 이야기가 아직도 생각이 난다. '선배님 제발 타석에 바짝 붙어 서지마세요' '또다시 몸에 맞으면 형수님이 마음 아파합니다' '선배님 왜 별명이 베트콩 입니까?' 이렇게 선배님한테 이야기 하면 아랑곳 하지 않고 어떻게 해서라도 1루에 진출하기 위해 최선을 다하던 선배님이 얼마나 화가 났으면 배트로 나를 때릴 정도였을까?

옛날 이야기 나누다보면 몇일을 해도 끝이 없을 정도다. 또 하나는 옛날 선수협 만들 때 최동원 선수와 이만수 두 선수가 뽑혀 선수협 초대 회장 투표했다. 그런데 노조가 없던 삼성그룹이 야구선수들이 대전에 모여 선수협을 만든다는 소식을 듣고 구단에서 전화가 오고 야단이 났던 기억이 난다.

모든 선수들이 최동원 선수를 선수협 초대 회장으로 선출할 것을 기대했는데 난데 없이 김인식 선배가 손을 들어 이만수 선수를 추천한다며 나의 이름을 올렸다. 결국 최동원 선수와 내가 선수협에 나와 투표했다. 그런데 나를 추천했던 김인식 선배가 나에게 한표를 주어야 하는데 김인식 선배가 결국 나에게 주지 않고 최동원 투수에게 몰표로 주었다. 그러면서 그당시 왜 자기가 이만수 후배를 추천하면서 투표하지 않았는지에 대해 설명한다.

'삼성그룹은 노조도 없고 또 이만수가 선수협에 나오게 되면 프로야구도 시끄럽고 또 이만수 후배가 장래에 큰 지장이 있기 때문에 자기가 좋아하는 이만수 선수를 비록 추천했지만 마지막 가서 투표할 때는 이만수 후배에게 투표하지 않고 최동원 투수에게 몰표 주었다'고 한다. 그당시 나에게 투표한 사람이 단 한사람도 없이 최동원 투수에게 몰표로 선수협 초대회장이 되었다.

선배님의 인생 스토리와 프로야구 초창기 시절의 이야기를 하다보니 시간이 빨리 지나갔는지 몰랐다. 식당에서도 우리를 쳐다보며 무언의 암시적인 눈치를 주었지만 이런 기회가 아니면 언제 다시 할 수 있느냐?며 계속 이야기를 이어갔다. 이날 주도권은 당연 이해성 단장님이다. 앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 이해성 단장님의 해박한 야구지식은 솔직히 끝이 없었다. 이날 하지 못한 이야기는 다음에 꼭 다시 만나서 하잖다.

예전 한국프로야구 초창기를 주름 잡았던 김인식 선배로 인해 이날 만큼은 헤어지기 싫었다. 인천으로 돌아오는 내내 차 안에서 나의 입가에 웃음이 사라지지 않았다.

선배님~ 오래 건강하세요. 그리고 후배들을 위해 좋은 야구 많이 가르쳐 주세요.

Lee Hae-sung, general manager of Yeoncheon Miracle Baseball Team, contacted me several times this year. He contacted me saying that he would like to have a good time with manager Kim In-sik, coaches and players. This year, I rarely had time because I was traveling abroad, but I contacted Lee Hae-sung the day after the developmental disability T-Ball baseball tournament ended, and made an appointment to meet him on May 31.

The Yeoncheon Miracle Baseball Team is the unrivaled team in the independent league. It has won the title in all competitions as if it were the unified Korean team every year. It already won the "KBO Dream Cup" competition this year. At the initiative of the team's general manager Lee Hae-sung, the team had a meeting at a Japanese restaurant in Hapjeong-dong, Seoul on Sunday. On the day, I met with manager Kim In-sik, coach Roh Chan-yup and the players, and had a lot of conversations while eating delicious food.

Kim In-shik has competed in good faith since the days of MBC`s Blue Dragon, which had Seoul as its home team in the early days of professional baseball in 1982. Even though many years have passed, the two have kept in touch with each other and are still on good terms.

Lee Hae-sung, general manager of Yeoncheon Miracle Baseball Team, is close to manager Kim In-sik. To be honest, I was surprised as a baseball player after hearing Lee Hae-sung's extensive knowledge of baseball. He remembers all the important games from the early days of professional baseball with such extensive knowledge.

In particular, he was an engineering student, so he had some idea about hitting. For example, in the early days of professional baseball, Korean professional baseball was a time when typical Japanese professional baseball was passed on as it was. Axe hitting was popular at the time. However, General Manager Lee Hae-sung reportedly told his friend Kim In-sik several times at the time, saying he could not understand why batters were always using axes.

Lee Hae-sung, a former engineering student, said, "Scientifically, if you axe a ball from the top, you can't hit well because there is no RBI that hits you," adding, "A person who is well over 70 years old stands up at the restaurant and demonstrates how to hit the ball. The Yeoncheon Miracle players, who were watching this scene, are paying attention to it while opening their mouths.

From then on, the story began in the early days of professional baseball in Korea, and the story continued until the end of the day. In addition, when Kim In-sik played against the Samsung Lions team during the MBC Blue Dragon era, he said, "If Mansu sits as a catcher, he doesn't know how hard it was to talk."

In the meantime, Kim In-shin said in the past, "Lee Man-soo's talking was amazing," but young Yeoncheon Miracle players couldn't close their mouths and listened to it next to him. Kim In-sik once tells the players that this happened. When I was entering the batter's box, Lee Man-soo started talking again and I couldn't hit him, so I couldn't hit him. As a result, players from both teams came to the ground and said they had memories of a banch cleaning, and Miracle players laughed, saying it was fun.

I was so angry that I complained to the referee that all the referees were on their side at the time and they were not sent off. It is unimaginable in these days, but it was a time when this was common at that time.

In the early days of professional baseball, Kim In-sik's gritty attitude was his trademark, and his expression of "Why are you hitting me?" when he was hit by the ball, and his playing style, which made him feel like he was going to steal first base in all kinds of strictures, made him a considerable unfavorable image to fans of other teams at the time.

I told Miracle players, "Do you think my mouth would stay still because manager Kim In-sik is like this when he was active?" So when Kim In-sik came to the batter's box, I told the players, "I remember talking nonstop as if my mouth was on a motor and starting to wait," and the players laughed and moved on.

Soon after, Kim In-sik and general manager Lee Hae-sung told the behind-the-scenes story of how they had strong grit to the extent that they were beaten by Jang Myung-boo in 1983 by three consecutive hit balls. Kim In-sik was angry at Jang Myung-boo's third consecutive hit by him, and ran to the mound to catch Jang. However, the problem was that he didn't know much about banch clearing at the time, so he went up to the mound alone and came down. Players who were listening to him grab the boat and move on.

Kim In-sik talks about his early days in professional baseball, but there is no end to the story. In particular, he knows too well about Lee Hae-chang and Kim Il-gon, Lee Jong-do, Kim Yoo-soo, Lee Sun-hee, and Hwang Kyu-bong. In addition, we talked more about Jang Hyo-jo and Choi Dong-won, who went to heaven first, but there is not enough space to list them here.

Kim In-shik was a player who lived through an era with consistency and grit when he was an MBC Blue Dragon player. He devoted himself to himself and his team to the end, to the extent that there were no games that he couldn't participate due to illness. And Kim In-shik's nickname when he was active was "Bet Kong," which was given to him due to his short stature and dark skin.

Lee Hae-sung, who was listening to the nickname, told the players, "Do you know the real nickname of manager Kim In-sik?" Of course, the representative nickname is "Bet Kong," but Kim In-sik's real nickname is separate. Manager Kim In-sik's nickname, which has been attached to his friends since childhood, is "Catchul-ttogi."

How did you become a "catchy grasshopper"? In other words, it is said that his mother made a living by selling salted shrimp when he was a child, so he was nicknamed "Kkuldokkiri" from his childhood. Lee Hae-sung, the general manager, has lived in the same neighborhood with Kim In-sik since he was a child, so he knows too well about the behind-the-scenes story about Kim In-sik.

Kim In-sik talks from his childhood to his early days in professional baseball, and it's time to get off work. I wanted to talk more, but I couldn't go to Incheon anymore because it was time to get off work, so I promised to meet again next time and broke up.

As mentioned earlier, I still remember what I always said to my senior when I played against the MBC Blue Dragon team. "Please don't stand close to the batter's box," "If you get hit again, your sister-in-law will be heartbroken," and "Why is your nickname Viet Cong?" If I told him like this, how angry would the senior who was doing his best to advance to the first base be to hit me with the bat?

Talking about the past, there is no end no matter how many days we have. Another was when Choi Dong-won and Lee Man-soo were selected to form the Korea Professional Baseball Association, and voted for the first president of the Korea Professional Baseball Association. However, I remember the Samsung Group, which had no union, got a call from the team and got scolded when I heard that baseball players would gather in Daejeon to form a Korea Professional Baseball Association.

All of the players expected to elect Choi as the first president of the Korea Federation of Athletes' Association, but out of the blue, Kim In-shik raised his hand and put me on the list, saying, "I recommend Lee Man-soo." In the end, Choi and I came to the Korea Federation of Athletes' Association and voted. However, Kim In-sik, who recommended me, had to give me a vote, but Kim In-sik eventually did not give it to me, but gave it to Choi Dong-won as a vote. Then, he explains why he did not vote while recommending Lee Man-soo's junior at the time.

"Samsung Group does not have a union, and if Lee Man-soo comes to the Korea Professional Baseball Association, professional baseball will be noisy, and Lee Man-soo's junior will have a big impact on the future, so I recommended his favorite player, but when I went to the last time I voted, I didn't vote for Lee Man-soo's junior and gave all the votes to Choi Dong-won." At that time, no one voted for me, and Choi Dong-won became the first president of the Korea Professional Baseball Association.

Talking about his senior's life story and the early days of professional baseball, I didn't realize that time flew by. The restaurant also looked at us and gave us implicit hints, but he kept saying, "If it's not for this opportunity, when can we do it again?" As I mentioned earlier, Lee Hae-sung, the general manager, frankly, had endless knowledge about baseball. We should meet again next time to talk about things we couldn't talk about on the day.

I didn't want to part with Kim In-sik, who dominated the early days of the Korean professional baseball league. All the way back to Incheon, my smile didn't go away in the car.

Senior, please stay healthy for a long time. And please teach me a lot of good baseball for your juniors.
