드디어 베트남 야구국가대표 팀이 7월 1일 열흘간의 미니캠프를 위해 한국에 들어온다. 이번에 한국에 들어올 수 있었던 것도 대한민국 문체부와 대한체육회 그리고 대한야구소프트볼협회의 배려로 베트남 국가대표 선수들이 비록 짧은 기간이지만 좋은 경험을 쌓을 것이라 기대해본다.

앞으로 다가올 시게임(Sea game) (시게임은 이들 동남아에서 스포츠 올림픽이라고 할 정도로 많은 관심을 갖고 있다.)을 위해 대한민국 정부에서 특별히 신경을 써 베트남 야구국가대표 선수들이 위대한 대한민국 선진야구를 경험하게 될 것이다. 인도차이나반도로 내려간지 어느덧 11년째가 된다. 처음 라오스로 내려갈 때만 해도 모든 사람들이 동남아에서 야구는 불가능한 일이라고 이야기 했다.

모두가 불가능하고 절대 할 수 없다고 생각했던 라오스 야구가 재작년 2023년 9월달에 있었던 중국항저우아시안게임에 출전해 싱가폴 팀 상대로 극적인 8 : 7 로 첫승을 올렸다. 누가 믿기라도 했던가? 아무도 믿지 않았고 기대도 하지 않았다. 그런 야구의 불모지인 라오스 팀이 아시안게임에서 첫승을 올렸다.

지난 11년 동안 얼마나 많은 일들이 있었는지 모른다. 그 많은 일들로 인해 마음의 상처와 억울함 그리고 모함으로 인해 당장 그만두고 싶었던 일들이 많을 때마다 나의 인생철학인 “Never ever give up” 정신으로 달려왔다.

박효철 감독과 함께 베트남에서 야구를 시작한지도 어느덧 4년째가 된다. 지난 시간동안 어떻게 하면 베트남 야구가 발전할 수 있는지 끊임없이 머리를 맞대고 고민했던 시간들이 기억이 난다.

박효철 감독은 미국에서 배웠던 선진야구의 노하우들을 어떻게 하면 짧은 시간에 베트남 청소년들에게 보급 시킬 수 있을지 고민 끝에 14세~23세 선수들을 위주로 야구 기본기를 훈련하여 이들이 본인이 속한 학교와 동아리 팀에 돌아가 야구의 규칙과 기술을 전달할 수 있는 수준에 도달할 수 있도록 시키는 것을 목표로 삼아 지금까지 지속적으로 베트남 선수들을 훈련시키고 있다.

풍부한 지도자 경험을 통해 야구의 기본기를 중요하게 생각하며 야구 가르치기를 사명으로 생각하는 박효철 감독 또한 앞으로 베트남 야구를 전파하는데 가장 중요한 역할을 해주고 있다. 박효철 감독의 헌신적인 지도로 인해 앞으로 10년 안에 동남아시아의 맹주로 자리 잡을 것이다. 물론 그렇게 되기까지 앞으로 해야 할 과제들이 많다.

베트남 야구는 아직 야구 인프라가 제대로 갖추어지지 않은 나라다. 부족한 베트남 야구를 발전시키고 대중스포츠로 활성화 되기 위해서는 많은 시간과 노력이 필요하다.

2021년 처음 야구를 시작할 때만 해도 베트남 청소년들에게 야구는 생소한 스포츠 종목중 하나였다. 베트남에서 가장 인기 있는 스포츠를 뽑으라면 단연 축구다. 베트남은 아직 나에게 모든것들이 낯설고 생소한 나라다. 비록 긴 시간은 아니지만 이들 베트남 청소년들과 같이 본격적으로 야구를 시작하고부터 많은 사람들이 가장 대중적으로 즐기고 보고 있는 스포츠인 축구에서 아주 조금씩 야구에 대한 호감을 갖게 되었다.

이제 베트남 청소년들에게 야구가 조금씩 보급되기 시작하면서 야구에 대한 관심이 크게 증가하고 있음을 알 수 있다. 지난번에도 이야기 했지만 요즈음 베트남 청소년들 사이에 유행하는 것이 MLB 모자나 유니폼 그리고 셔츠를 입고 다니는 것이 이들에게 부의 상징처럼 되어가고 있다.

동남아시아는 흔히 말하는 야구 불모지다. 그런 곳에서 야구 용품을 들고, 야구를 하는 아이들이 길거리에 보이기 시작했다는 것은 베트남의 야구가 발전하고 있고, 머지 않은 미래에 베트남이 세계 야구에 신선한 센세이션을 일으킬 수 있다는 의미라고 나는 생각한다.

이러한 베트남 야구의 급격한 발전은 박효철 감독의 숨은 공로가 가장 크다고 생각한다.지금도 밤낮을 가리지 않고 베트남 야구 발전을 위해 구슬땀을 흘리면서 뛰어 다니고 있다. 무엇보다 선수들이 훈련에 집중할 수 있도록 목이 쉬도록 선수들에게 일일이 이야기하고 본인이 직접 볼을 던져주고 펑고를 치고 1인다역을 하고 있다.

아직 베트남에는 라오스처럼 번뜻한 야구장도 없는 상황이다. 이러한 열악한 환경이지만, 야구 발전이라는 목표로 지금도 분주하게 박효철 감독은 열심히 뛰어 다니고 있다. 

베트남 야구 발전을 위해 불철주야 노력하고 있는 박효철 감독은 베트남의 야구 발전이 비록 더디고 느리지만 올바른 방향으로 나아가고 있다. 다시 강조하는 이야기지만 머지 않은 미래에 베트남이 세계 야구에 신선한 센세이션을 일으킬 수 있을 것이다.

1904년 필립 질레트 선교사로 부터 시작된 한국야구가 120년이 지난 지금 프로야구 천만관중을 이끌어 낼지 누가 알았겠는가?

불모지 땅에서 결실을 맺기까지 얼마나 많은 어려움이 있었겠는가? 누군가의 희생이 없었더라면 일구어 낼 수 없는 일이지만 눈물로 씨를 뿌리는 자가 있었기에 기쁨으로 단을 거둘 날을 묵묵히 인내하며 그 날을 기대하며 기다린다.

Finally, the Vietnamese national baseball team will enter Korea for a 10-day mini-camp on July 1. It is expected that Vietnamese national baseball players will gain good experience, albeit for a short period, due to the consideration of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the Korea Baseball Softball Association, and the Korea Baseball Organization.

As the South Korean government pays special attention to the upcoming "Sea Games," players from the Vietnamese national baseball team will experience great advanced Korean baseball. It has been 11 years since they went down to the Indochina Peninsula. When they first went down to Laos, everyone said baseball was impossible in Southeast Asia.

Lao baseball, which everyone thought was impossible and never possible, competed at the Hangzhou Asian Games in China two years ago in September 2023, and secured its first dramatic 8:7 victory over a Singaporean team. Who even believed it? No one believed it or expected it. Such a barren Laos team won its first Asian Games title.

I don't know how much has happened in the last 11 years. Whenever there were many things that I wanted to quit immediately due to heartache, injustice, and framing, I ran to the spirit of "Never give up," which is my life philosophy.

It's already been four years since I started baseball in Vietnam with coach Park Hyo-chul. I remember the past time when I was constantly thinking about how to develop Vietnamese baseball.

Coach Park Hyo-chul has been continuously training Vietnamese players so far, aiming to train baseball basic skills mainly for players aged 14 to 23 years old to reach the level of delivering baseball rules and skills by returning to their schools and club teams after thinking about how to distribute the know-how of advanced baseball he learned in the United States to Vietnamese teenagers in a short time.

Park Hyo-chul, who values the basics of baseball through his abundant leadership experience and whose mission is to teach baseball, is also playing an essential role in spreading Vietnamese baseball in the coming years. With Park's dedicated guidance, he will become the dominant player in Southeast Asia within the next 10 years. Of course, there are many tasks ahead of him.

Vietnamese baseball is a country that does not have enough baseball infrastructure yet. It takes a lot of time and effort to develop Vietnamese baseball, which is insufficient, and to be activated as a popular sport.

When I first started playing baseball in 2021, baseball was one of the unfamiliar sports to Vietnamese youth. Soccer is by far the most popular sport in Vietnam. Vietnam is still a country where everything is unfamiliar to me and unfamiliar to me. Although it is not a long time since I started playing baseball in earnest with these Vietnamese teenagers, I have developed a liking for baseball little by little in soccer, the most popular sport that many people enjoy and watch.

Now, as baseball has begun to spread little by little to Vietnamese teenagers, interest in baseball is increasing significantly. As I said last time, wearing MLB hats, uniforms and shirts is becoming a symbol of wealth to Vietnamese teenagers these days.

Southeast Asia is commonly referred to as a baseball barren. I think the fact that children with baseball equipment and playing baseball are starting to be seen on the street in such places means that Vietnam's baseball is developing, and Vietnam can become a fresh sensation in world baseball in the near future.

I think Park Hyo-chul's hidden contribution to the rapid development of Vietnamese baseball is the biggest. Even now, he is running around day and night sweating to develop Vietnamese baseball. Above all, he tells the players one by one so that they can concentrate on their training, throws the ball, hits the pungo, and plays multiple roles.

Vietnam does not have a baseball stadium like Laos yet. Despite such a poor environment, coach Park Hyo-chul is still busy running hard with the goal of developing baseball.

Coach Park Hyo-chul, who is working hard all day to develop Vietnamese baseball, is moving in the right direction, albeit slowly and slowly. Again, Vietnam could be a fresh sensation in world baseball in the near future.

Who knew that Korean baseball, which started with missionary Philip Gillette in 1904, will attract 10 million viewers in professional baseball 120 years later?

How many difficulties would there have been before it came to fruition in the barren land? It would not have been possible without someone's sacrifice, but since there was someone who sowed the seeds with tears, I silently endure the day and wait for the day to be completed with joy.
