< 100호 홈런 경쟁자인 김봉연 선수 >

김봉연 선배와의 인연은 많다. 김봉연 선배와 나는 홈런의 호적수였지만, 평소엔 경쟁 관계라기보다는 매우 가까운 사이였다. 김봉연 선배의 손위 동서가 우리나라 최초 권투 세계챔피언 김기수 형님이다. 거기에 비해 나의 동서는 첫번째 형님이다. 딸 여섯에 와이프는 막내다. 형님과 김기수 형님과는 어릴 때부터 이북에서 친구 사이였다. 두분 다 함경북도 북청 출신으로 한국전쟁 1‧4후퇴 당시 피란을 와서 남한에 정착해 살았다. 그러다 보니 김봉연 선배와 나는 동서를 매개로 가족끼리도 자주 만났다.

이러듯 그라운드 밖에선 서로 좋은 사이였지만, 그래도 그라운드 안에서는 보이지 않는 경쟁 관계. 특히 홈런에 관한 한 자존심이 강한 김봉연 선배와 나는 100호 홈런 만큼은 절대 양보할 수 없는 사이다.

1980년대 달군 영‧호남의 100호 홈런 대결은 그야말로 대한민국 최고의 이슈가 아닐 수 없었다. 어디를 가나 김봉연 선배가 먼저 100호 홈런을 칠 것인가 아니면 내가 먼저 홈런을 칠 것인가에 온 국민들의 이슈가 되었다. 이렇다보니 자연스럽게 김기수 형님과 큰동서인 형님과 비록 가까운 친구 사이지만 서로 치열한 선의 경쟁이 되었다.

작년에 이어 올해도 한국프로야구 1000만명 돌파라는 놀라운 기록을 세울 것인지에 대해 많은 기대를 하고 있지만 올해도 1000만명 관중 돌파는 무난히 이루어질 것 같다. 작년에 이어 올해 대한민국프로야구 최고의 인기를 누리고 있지만 1980년 대의 100호 홈런에는 못 미치는것 같다. (나만의 생각일지 모르나...)

한국프로야구 역사가 40년이 넘었지만 대한민국프로야구 역사 중에서 가장 흥미롭게 대중들로부터 많은 관심을 갖게 했던 것은 단연 김봉연 선배와 나와의 100호 홈런을 펼친 경쟁이 가장 흥미로운 라이벌 스토리 중 하나였을 것이다.

지금도 잊을 수가 없었던 것은 1980년대에 대한민국을 들썩이게 만든 나와 김봉연 선배의 한국프로야구 최초 100호 홈런을 과연 누가 먼저 칠 것인지에 만인들에게 관심의 초첨이었다.

이당시 언론의 스포트라이트도 ‘헐크’ 이만수와 ‘촌놈’ 김봉연의 라이벌 구도라는 대목으로 매일 대서특필로 다루었다.

100호 홈런을 누가 먼저 칠 것인지에 대한 관심도 많았지만 이 당시만 해도 영,호남의 보이지 않는 라이벌과 경쟁심으로 인해 사람들에게 더 많은 관심을 갖게 했는지 모른다.

이 당시 삼성라이온즈 4번 타자 이만수 , 해태 타이거즈 4번 타자 김봉연... 그리고 매일 기사에는 영남 대 호남. 해태 타이거즈 대 삼성 라이온즈. 이만수와 김봉연의 홈런 라이벌 구도는 1980년대 중·후반까지 프로야구 흥행을 이끈 기막힌 소재 중 하나였다.

대한민국 국민들에게 흥미를 주었던 것은 한국프로야구 최강 팀인 해태 타이거즈 팀과 삼성 라이온즈 팀과의 경쟁도 있었지만 이 당시 국민들에게 가장 많은 관심을 가져다 주었던 것이 홈런이었다. 야구하면 이 당시 홈런이었다. 지금은 누구나 칠 수 있는 홈런이었지만 그 당시만 해도 홈런 치기가 얼마나 어려운 시대였는지 모른다.

앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 이 당시 두 팀은 전력적으로 최강이었고, 김봉연 선배와 나는 프로야구 초창기 최고의 홈런 타자들답게 서로 앞서거니 뒤서거니 홈런을 때리면서 프로야구 팬들을 들었다 놨다 했다.

김봉연 선배와 치열한 홈런 경쟁을 만들어 놓았던 일등공신은 단연 언론이었다. 연일 보도되는 언론으로 인해 대한민국 국민이라면 누구 할 것 없이 자연스럽게 김봉연 선배와 나와의 홈런 경쟁이다. 

누가 말하지 않아도 자연스럽게 ‘누가 대한민국 최고 홈런 타자냐’, ‘누가 먼저 통산 100호 홈런에 도달할까’를 놓고 논쟁과 내기가 끊이지 않았던 기억이 난다. 팀의 승패도 승패지만, 그 시절 프로야구는 곳곳에 이런 라이벌 구도와 스토리로 인해 하루하루 야구 보는 재미와 흥미가 정말 대단했다.

김봉연 선배는 1952년생이고 거기에 반해 나는 1958년생이다. 김봉연 선배는 연세대 시절부터 ‘촌놈’이라는 별명을 가졌고, 나는 괴력의 홈런포를 터뜨리면서 당시 인기리에 방영된 미국 드라마 ‘두 얼굴의 사나이’ 주인공인 ‘헐크’라는 별명을 갖고 있었다.

한국프로야구가 40년이 훌쩍 넘었지만 지금도 잊을 수 없었던 것은 한국프로야구 초창기 시절 100호 홈런 선착 경쟁으로 인해 대한민국 최고의 인기를 누렸다.

이 당시 대한민국프로야구에서 누가 먼저 100호 홈런을 칠 것인지에 대한 관심이 컸으면 부상으로 100호 홈런을 먼저 치는 선수에게 고급 승용차를 부상으로 내 놓았다. 이 당시만 해도 승용차가 흔하지 않은 시대라 부상으로 승용차까지 나와 더 많은 관심을 갖게 했다. 거기다가 금 10냥쭝짜리 골든배트, VTR 등 720만 원 상당의 부상도 받았다.

지금도 그날을 잊을 수가 없다. 대망의 한국프로야구 최초 100호 홈런이 터지는 날이 9월 2일 홈구장인 대구구장에서 열린 빙그레전에 나는 1번타자로 나섰다. 빙그레 이글스 팀의 선발투수는 천창호 투수였다.

나는 1회말 리드오프로 타석에 들어섰다. 초구는 몸 쪽 높은 직구. 내가 가장 좋아하는 코스로 볼이 들어왔다. 이 기회를 놓치지 않고 나는 온 힘으로 풀스윙해 통타했다. 맞는 순간 홈런임을 직감했다. 지금도 그 순간의 짜릿한 손맛은 잊을 수가 없다. 얼마나 잘 맞았으면 왼쪽 외야 관중석을 지나 장외로 넘어가 버렸다.

나의 전매특허인 특유의 총총 걸음으로 다이아몬드를 달리기 시작했다. 1루 돌아 2루와 3루 앞에서 나의 전매특허인 ‘껑충 세리머니’를 펼치며 기쁨을 주체하지 못했던 기억은 아직도 잊혀지지 않는다. 3루를 돈 뒤 나의 은사이기도 한 정동진 코치님과 포옹을 했고, 천진난만한 함박웃음 속에 홈플레이트를 밟으면서 나의 전매특허인 ‘만세 세리머니’를 펼쳤다.

지금 기준으로 보면 100호 홈런은 큰 이슈가 될 수 없을지 모른다. 왜냐하면 이미 최정 선수가 500호 홈런을 쳤기 때문이다. 그러나 1980년 시대의 한국프로야구는 나와 김봉연 선배의 라이벌 구도는 정말 치열했던 한 시대를 풍미했을 정도다. 지금도 옛날 팬들이나 나이가 지긋이 된 분들은 그 시대의 향수를 잊지 못하고 이야기 할 때가 있다.

100호 홈런 경쟁자인 김봉연 선배와 나는 여전히 수많은 사람들에게 추억 속에 진한 낭만과 향수로 남아 있을 것이다.

As a result, Kim Bong-yeon and I met our family often through East and West.

We were on good terms outside the ground, but we are still in a competitive relationship that is not seen inside the ground. Especially when it comes to home runs, Kim Bong-yeon and I, who have strong self-esteem, cannot yield as much as our 100th home run.

The 100th home run match between Young and Honam, which was heated in the 1980s, was truly the best issue in Korea. Wherever Kim Bong-yeon went, the issue of whether Kim Bong-yeon hit his 100th home run first or I hit my home run first became the issue of the whole nation. As a result, Kim Ki-soo and his eldest brother, who are close friends, naturally became a fierce competition with each other.

I have high expectations on whether I will set a remarkable record of surpassing 10 million in the Korean pro baseball this year following last year, but I think I will be able to surpass 10 million in the Korean pro baseball again this year. There was also a lot of interest in who would hit his 100th home run first, but at this time, the invisible rivals and competition between Young and Honam may have made people more interested.

At that time, Samsung Lions' No. 4 hitter Lee Man-soo and Haitai Tigers' No. 4 hitter Kim Bong-yeon... And in the daily article, Yeongnam vs. Honam vs. Haitai Tigers vs. Samsung Lions. The rivalry between Lee Man-soo and Kim Bong-yeon was one of the most successful home runs in professional baseball until the mid and late 1980s.

What interested the Korean people was the competition between the Haitai Tigers team and the Samsung Lions team, the strongest team in the Korean professional baseball, but home runs were what attracted the most attention to the people at that time. When it comes to baseball, it was a home run at this time. It was a home run that anyone can hit now, but we don't know how difficult it was to hit a home run at that time.

As mentioned earlier, the two teams were the strongest in power at the time, and Kim Bong-yeon and I were the best home run hitters in the early days of professional baseball, holding up professional baseball fans by hitting home runs one after another.

The media was by far the first contributor to the fierce home run competition with Kim Bong-yeon. Due to the media that has been reported every day, it is a home run competition between Kim Bong-yeon and me, regardless of whether it is the Korean people.

Even if no one says it, I remember that there were constant debates and bets over "who is the best home run hitter in Korea" and "who will reach his 100th career home run first." The team's victory or defeat is also victory or defeat, but in those days, professional baseball was really fun and interesting to watch baseball day by day due to the rivalry and story everywhere.

Kim Bong-yeon was born in 1952, whereas I was born in 1958. Kim Bong-yeon has been nicknamed "Chon-nom" since his days at Yonsei University, and I was nicknamed "Hulk," the main character of the American drama "Man of Two Faces," which was popular at the time as he hit a home run.

Although the Korean professional baseball has been over 40 years, what was still unforgettable was that it enjoyed the highest popularity in Korea due to the competition for the 100th home run in the early days of Korean professional baseball.

At that time, if there was a great interest in who would hit his 100th home run first in the Korean professional baseball, he gave a luxury car to a player who hit his 100th home run first due to injury. Back then, passenger cars were not common, so even passenger cars were injured, which attracted more attention. In addition, he received 7.2 million won worth of injuries including a golden bat worth 10 nyang jong and a VTR.

I still can't forget that day. The long-awaited day when my 100th home run in the Korean professional baseball league exploded was on Sept. 2 at Binggrae game held at Daegu Stadium, my home ground. The starting pitcher for Binggrae Eagles was Chun Chang-ho.

I entered the batter's box with leadoff in the bottom of the first inning. The first pitch was a high fastball. The ball entered the court as my favorite course. Not missing this opportunity, I swung and hit the ball with all my might. The moment I was hit, I felt it was a home run. Even now, I still can't forget the thrilling feeling of the moment. How well it hit me, I passed the left outfield stands and went to the outside field.

He started running around the diamond with his unique gun steps. I still can't forget the memory that I couldn't control my joy by performing my signature "jumping ceremony" in front of the second and third bases around the first base. After running around the third base, I hugged my coach Chung Dong-jin, who is also my teacher, and performed my signature "Manse Ceremony" while stepping on the home plate with an innocent smile.

Based on the current standards, the 100th home run may not be a big issue. Because Choi Jung has already hit his 500th home run. However, in the 1980s, the rivalry between me and Kim Bong-yeon was very fierce. Even now, there are times when old fans and those who are still very old cannot forget the nostalgia of that era.
