< 문광 스님의 어린 시절 꿈 >

지난 6월 9일, 친구를 만나기 위해 서울 종로에 나갔다. 인천에 살다 보니 예전처럼 자주 서울에 나가는 일이 많지 않다. 이날은 베트남에서 잠시 귀국한 나의 친구인 신재영 대표가 중요한 사람을 소개해 주었다. 친구의 말에 따르면, 지난번 ‘발달장애인 티볼 야구대회’에 참석하지 못한 것이 늘 마음에 걸렸다고 한다.

신 대표는 내가 재단을 어떻게 운영하고 있는지, 그리고 국내외를 다니면서 어떻게 야구를 보급하고 있는지 어느 누구보다 잘 알고 있는 친구다.

그동안 내가 인도차이나반도의 라오스와 베트남 그리고 캄보디아는 물론이고, 곧 있을 인도네시아로 내려가 야구를 보급하고 젊은 선수들을 모아 지도하는 것을 잘 알고 있는 친구다. 나에 대해 너무 잘 알고 있기에 친구는 조금이라도 나를 위해 도움을 주고자 4일밖에 되지 않는 짧은 시간 동안 동분서주 바쁘게 뛰어다녔다.

그날은 특별히 한국발달장애인야구소프트볼협회 김재목 회장과 함께 미팅을 가졌다. 한국발달장애인야구소프트볼협회가 어떤 단체이고 어떤 목적과 비전을 갖고 운영하는지에 대해서 상세하게 설명했다. 무엇보다 발달장애인 선수들을 위해 헌신적으로 달려가는 김재목 회장이 협회 차원에서 조금이라도 선수들에게 좋은 환경과 좋은 여건에서 선수들이 마음껏 운동할 수 있도록 밤낮을 가리지 않고 열심히 뛰어다니는 멋진 회장이다.

이날 점심을 같이 하면서 좋은 시간을 가졌다. 그리고 근처에 김윤태 친구의 사무실이 있어서 김윤태 친구에게 전화해 이날 오후에 만나기로 약속을 정했다. 김윤태 친구는 고교 시절부터 함께 지낸 아주 오랜 친구다. 이날도 모처럼 만나 그동안 나누지 못한 세상 이야기와 앞으로 있을 미래에 대해 많은 대화를 나누었다.

이날 친구는 특별히 소개하고 싶은 분이 있다며 좋은 자리를 마련해 주었다. 요즘 젊은이들 사이에서 화제가 되고 있는 ‘문광 스님’이 곧 오신다는 것이었다. 친구의 말을 듣고 나는 그 자리에서 바로 인터넷으로 ‘문광 스님’이 어떤 분인지 찾아보았다. 인터넷에 접속해 ‘문광 스님’을 검색하자, 위키백과를 시작으로 유튜브, BTN불교TV, 다양한 불교 강연 영상들이 쏟아져 나왔다. 그중에서도 최근 가장 화제를 모은 것은 걸그룹 블랙핑크 제니의 첫 정규 앨범 수록곡 ‘젠(ZEN)’을 불교적으로 해석한 문광 스님의 영상이었다.

이 영상은 공개 하루 만에 조회 수 7만 회를 넘겼고, 570여 개의 댓글이 달릴 만큼 큰 반향을 일으켰다. 심지어 해외에서도 영어 자막을 요청하는 등 그 영향력이 국외로까지 확산되고 있다는 보도도 이어졌다.

앞서 잠시 언급했듯이, ‘문광 스님’이 오시기 전 나는 인터넷을 통해 간단히 검색해 보았다. 친구의 말처럼, 문광 스님은 요즘 불교계에서 가장 주목받는 인물로 큰 인기를 끌고 있었다. 친구는 문광 스님에 대해 열정적으로 설명하며 한참 이야기를 이어가고 있었는데, 바로 그 순간 문광 스님께서 우리가 있는 자리로 직접 찾아오셨다.

탄허학의 대가이신 ‘문광 스님’을 한 번 만나기 위해 몇 날 며칠이고 기다리는 사람들도 많다고 들었다. 그런데도 스님께서는 누추하고 보잘것없는 나와 친구, 그리고 세 분의 불교 신자를 만나기 위해 직접 이 자리에 찾아와 주셨다.

위키백과에 따르면 문광 스님은 1971년 대구에서 태어나, 어린 시절을 대구 신암동에서 보냈다고 한다. 대구에서 어린 시절을 보내다 보니 자연스럽게 삼성라이온즈팀의 팬이 되었고 어린이회원이었다고 한다. 어린 시절 부모님과 함께 대구 시민야구장을 찾아 열심히 응원도 했고 공교롭게도 나의 팬이 되어 그 시절 친구들과 열심히 야구장을 찾았다고 한다.

어린 시절부터 시작해 대학 시절까지 열심히 야구를 좋아하고 야구장을 여러 번 찾아가서 응원도 했지만, 연세대 중문학과 학사 및 석사를 마치고 다시 동국대 불교학과에서 불교 공부를 하고 한국학중앙연구원 철학박사를 끝으로 승려가 되고부터는 야구와 멀어졌다고 한다.

이날 ‘문광 스님’과 차를 마시면서 몇 시간 동안 야구 이야기에 시간 가는 줄 몰랐다. 이렇게 보이지 않는 곳에서 오랫동안 나를 응원해 주고 또 추억을 다시 되새기며 작은 것이라도 함께하고자 하는 분들이 있기에 오랜 세월 한길만 걸어온 것에 대한 보람과 감동이 있다.

살다 보면 때때로 오해와 모함으로 힘든 시간을 겪기도 하지만, 반대로 이렇게 많은 세월이 흘렀음에도 불구하고 나와 개인적인 인연이 없는 누군가가 선뜻 따뜻한 마음을 전할 때면, 정말 ‘평생 야구 하나만 바라보며 잘 살아왔구나’ 하는 뿌듯한 마음이 앞선다.

이제 내 나이 일흔을 바라보며 인생의 후반전을 달려가고 있지만, 내 삶이 다하는 그날까지 언제나 겸손한 자세로 걸어가려 한다.

인사하고 헤어지려고 하는데 '문광 스님'이 “탄허학 연구” 문광 지음 책을 선물한다. 더 감격스러운 것은 친필로 '저의 영원한 스타 이만수님' 적어서 선물한다.

On June 9, I went to Jongno, Seoul to meet my friend. Living in Incheon, I rarely go to Seoul as often as I used to. On this day, my friend Shin Jae-young, who returned from Vietnam for a while, introduced me to an important person. According to my friend, it always bothered me that I couldn't attend the 'T-Ball Baseball Competition for People with Developmental Disabilities' last time.

CEO Shin is a friend who knows better than anyone else how I run the foundation and how I am distributing baseball while traveling at home and abroad.
In the meantime, I am a friend who knows not only Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia on the Indochina Peninsula, but also Indonesia, where baseball is distributed, and young players are gathered and coached. Knowing me so well, my friend was busy running around for only four days to help me even a little bit.

That day, I had a special meeting with Kim Jae-mok, chairman of the Korea Baseball Softball Association for the Developed Disabled. It explained in detail what kind of organization the Korea Baseball Softball Association for the Developed Disabled operates with and with what purpose and vision. Above all, Chairman Kim Jae-mok, who runs devotedly for athletes with developmental disabilities, is a wonderful chairman who runs hard day and night so that players can exercise to their heart's content in a good environment and good conditions for the players at the association level.

We had a great time while having lunch together. I called my friend Kim Yun-tae and made an appointment to meet him in the afternoon. Kim Yun-tae is a long-time friend who we have been together since high school. We met again on this day for the first time in a long time and had many conversations about the world that we have not been able to talk about and about the future.

The friend prepared a nice place for me, saying that she wanted to introduce someone in particular. It was that Monk Mungwang, which is a hot topic among young people these days, would be coming soon. Hearing what my friend had said, I immediately looked up what kind of person he was on the Internet. When I went online and searched for Monk Mungwang, I saw a lot of videos of Buddhist lectures on YouTube, BTN Buddhism TV, and various other Buddhist lectures, starting with Wikipedia. Among them, the video clip that drew the most attention recently was the Buddhist interpretation of Jennie's first full-length album, ZEN.

The video was viewed more than 70,000 times within a day of its release, and caused a huge repercussion with more than 570 comments. There were even reports that its influence was spreading to foreign countries, such as requesting English subtitles overseas.

I did a quick search on the Internet before 'Vener Moon Kwang' arrived, as I mentioned earlier. As a friend said, Monk Moon Kwang was gaining huge popularity as the most prominent figure in the Buddhist world these days. The friend passionately explained about Monk Moon Kwang and continued talking for a long time, when he personally came to our place.

I've heard that many people wait for days to see 'Venerable Moon Kwang', a master of Tanheology. Nonetheless, the monk came here in person to meet me, a friend, and three Buddhists, who are shabby and insignificant.

According to Wikipedia, Monk Moon Kwang was born in Daegu in 1971 and spent his childhood in Sinam-dong, Daegu. After spending his childhood in Daegu, he naturally became a fan of the Samsung Lions and was a member of the Children's Club. When I was a child, I visited Daegu Citizens' Baseball Stadium with my parents and cheered hard, and coincidentally, I became a fan of mine and visited the baseball stadium with my friends at that time.

From childhood to college, he loved baseball and visited the ballpark several times to cheer for him, but after completing his bachelor's and master's degrees in Chinese literature at Yonsei University, he studied Buddhism at Dongguk University's Buddhist department and became a monk after completing his doctorate in philosophy at the Korea Studies Institute.

While drinking tea with "Venerable Moon Kwang" on this day, I lost track of time in baseball stories for hours. There are people who have been cheering for me for a long time in an invisible place like this, reflecting on memories, and wanting to be with me for even a small thing, so it is rewarding and touching to have walked for a long time.

Sometimes in life, misunderstandings and framing sometimes lead to difficult times, but on the contrary, when someone who has no personal relationship with me conveys his or her warm heart despite all these years, I feel proud that I have lived well looking at baseball all my life.

Now I am running through the second half of my life looking at my age of 70, but I always try to walk in a humble manner until the day my life ends.

I'm about to say hello and break up, but "Venerable Moon Kwang" presents a book written by Moon Kwang in "Research on Tanheology". What's more touching is that I write "My eternal star, Lee Man-soo" in my handwriting and give it as a gift.
