< 추억의 대구시민야구장 >

2024년 4월 27일, 이른 새벽 4시에 차를 타고 인천에서 경북 영천으로 향했다. 이날은 영천과 대구 달서구 구지에서 간증 일정이 예정되어 있었다. 오전 11시 예배를 마치고, 저녁 7시 집회까지의 시간 동안 모처럼 짬이 나 고향 대구로 향했다.

고향으로 가는 길은 언제나 설렌다. 어린 시절, 청년기, 프로야구 선수 시절과 지도자 생활을 지나 지금 칠순을 바라보는 나이에 이르기까지, 대구는 늘 내 마음의 뿌리다. 그날도 익숙한 길 위에서 마음은 벌써 옛 시절을 걷고 있었다.

대구에 도착한 뒤, 모처럼 모교를 찾아 후배들에게 재능기부를 할 생각이었다. 그런데 마침 대구시민야구장에서 대구상원고(옛 대구상고)와 경북고의 고교야구 주말리그 경기가 열린다는 소식을 듣게 되었고, 나는 자연스럽게 그 시합이 벌어지는 야구장으로 발길을 돌렸다.

나는 올해도 전국을 돌며 ‘이만수 포수상’ 수상 후보가 될 만한 포수들을 찾고 있다. 그중에서도 대구상원고와 경북고는 전통의 라이벌이자 강팀이기에 주목할 만한 경기였다. 야구장에는 양팀 학부모들과 동문들이 뜨거운 응원전을 펼치고 있었고, 나 역시 그 열기 속으로 들어섰다.

대구시민야구장. 그 이름만으로도 가슴이 뛴다. 이곳은 내 청춘의 전부를 바쳤던 야구장이자, 수많은 피와 땀, 그리고 눈물이 서린 인생의 무대다. 최신식 대구야구장이 들어선 지금도, 내 마음속 야구장은 여전히 이곳이다.

경기장에 들어서자, 마치 시간이 멈춘 듯했다. 현역 시절이 꼭 어제 같은데, 나는 어느덧 칠순을 바라보며 그라운드를 멀리서 지켜보고 있었다. 스탠드와 덕아웃, 본부석까지 나는 그날 혼자 야구장 구석구석을 걸으며 사진을 찍었다. 그 순간만큼은 다시 그 시절로 돌아간 듯했다.

떠오르는 장면들도 많다. 장외 홈런을 날린 뒤, 공이 주택가로 날아가 기와장을 깼다며 주민들이 찾아오던 일. 구단이 변상했던 기억. 그 주택들은 이제 대형 아파트로 바뀌었고, 풍경은 달라졌지만 마음에 남은 추억은 바래지 않았다.

젊을 때는 시간이 이토록 빠르게 흐를 줄 몰랐다. 이제는 현장을 떠나 그라운드를 바라보며 그 시절을 추억하는 나이가 되었지만, 그 모든 시간이 내 인생의 일부였고, 지금의 나를 만든 시간들이었다.

대구시민야구장은 이제 내 삶에서 한참 지난 이야기처럼 느껴질지 몰라도, 그날 그 자리에서 들려오는 함성은 여전히 내 귓가를 울린다.

On April 27, 2024, at 4 a.m., I drove from Incheon to Yeongcheon, Gyeongsangbuk-do. On this day, testimony was scheduled in Yeongcheon and the old district of Dalseo-gu, Daegu. After the service at 11 a.m., I had time to go to my hometown of Daegu during the time until the 7 p.m. rally.

The road to my hometown is always exciting. Daegu is always the root of my heart from childhood, youth, professional baseball player to the age when I am now approaching my 70th birthday. On the road that I was used to that day, my heart was already walking in the past.

After arriving in Daegu, I decided to visit my alma mater for the first time in a long time and donate my talents to my juniors. But when I heard that Daegu Sangwon High School (formerly Daegu Sangwon High School) and Gyeongbuk High School would be held at Daegu Civic Baseball Stadium, I naturally turned to the baseball stadium where the game took place.

This year, I am looking for catchers who can be candidates for the Lee Man-soo Catcher Award. Among them, Daegu Sangwon High School and Gyeongbuk High School were noteworthy because they were traditional rivals and strong teams. Parents and alumni of both teams were cheering at the ballpark, and I also entered the heat.

Daegu Citizens' Baseball Stadium. That name alone makes my heart race. This is a baseball stadium where I gave my whole youth, and a stage of my life with countless blood, sweat, and tears. Even now, the latest Daegu baseball stadium is still here.

When I entered the stadium, it seemed as if time had stopped. It felt like yesterday when I was active, but I was already watching the ground from a distance, looking at the 70th birthday. I walked all over the ballpark by myself that day, including the stand, the dugout, and the headquarters seat. At that moment, I felt like I was back in those days.

There are many scenes that come to mind. When residents visited the building to say that the ball flew to a residential area and broke the tile-roofed house after hitting an outdoor home run, the team compensated. The houses have now been turned into large apartments, and the landscape has changed, but the memories have not faded.

When I was young, I didn't know that time would pass so fast. I'm at an age where I leave the field, look at the ground, and remember those days, but all those times were part of my life and the times that made me who I am now.

Daegu Civic Baseball Stadium may feel like a long time ago in my life now, but the roar from the spot still rings my ears that day.
