현장을 떠난지 어느덧 11년째가 된다. 현장을 떠나 해외로 전국으로 다니면서 재능기부 할 때면 내가 알지 못하는 기술들을 보며 후배들에게 많이 배우고 있다. 늘 강조하는 이야기지만 아무리 나이가 많이 들고 자기 종목에서 최고의 위치에 있더라도 젊은이들이 갖고 있는 새로운 기술과 현대에 맞는 트렌드는 따라갈 수 없다.

물론 현장에서 나와 5 - 7년까지는 예전 내가 갖고 있는 노하우들을 젊은이들에게 전수하면 요즈음 트렌드라고 할 수 있는 기술부분에서 별로 색다르지 않다. 그리고 내가 늘 강조하는 이야기지만 야구는 100년이 넘어선 현대에 와서도 획기적으로 다른 점을 많이 볼 수 없다.

이전에 갖고 있는 기술들을 요즈음 현대 젊은 선수들에게 어떻게 적용하고 그들에게 어떻게 전달할 것인지에 대해 더 많이 고민하고 연구하고 공부해야 한다. 현장을 떠난지 10년이 넘다보니 이제는 나의 생각이나 나의 계획보다 '헐크파운데이션' 스텝진들의 생각을 더 많이 수용하고 받아 드리고 있다. 아무래도 나의 생각보다 요즈음 젊은 사람들의 생각이 훨씬 뛰어나다는 것을 많이 경험하며 옆에서 지켜보고 있다.

이번 인도네시아 '유소년 야구 아카데미'를 위해 모든 스케줄과 프로그램들을 최홍준 부장에게 일임했다. 이렇게 젊은 최홍준 부장에게 다 맡겼더니 얼마나 지혜롭게 잘 하는지 모른다.

이번 인도네시아 '유소년 야구 아카데미' 할 때 아들보다 더 젊은 후배들이 참가했다. 이들에게 믿고 맡겼더니 자신들이 맡은 역할에 대해 철저하게 준비해서 들어왔다. 이틀전에도 글을 썼지만 이들 셋은 아직 많이 젊은 편이다. 앞에서도 잠시 언급했지만 이들은 아들보다도 어린, 풋풋한 나이의 후배들이지만 그 열정과 책임감 만큼은 누구보다 깊고 단단함을 이들과 함께 생활하면서 알게 되었다. 특히 이번 활동이 가벼운 자리가 아님을 누구보다 잘 알고 있었을 텐데도, 오히려 기쁜 마음으로 동참하겠다며 나서주는 후배들이 자랑스럽고 고마울 뿐이다.


지난 11일 무더운 날씨와 높은 습도에 어린선수들이 구슬땀을 흘리면서도 젊은 세사람의 지도에 잘 따라한다. 앞에서도 이야기 했지만 젊은 나용훈, 김세훈, 김대륙 세 후배들이 이번 '유소년 야구 아카데미' 할 때 얼마나 철저하게 준비해 왔으면 어린선수들이 지치고 힘들어 하고 있음을 알고 갑자기 큰 스피커를 가지고 오더니 '오징어 게임'에 나오는 '둥글게 둥글게 놀이' (수건 돌리기)하자는 것이다.

그런데 깜짝 놀란 것은 여기 인도네시아에서도 어린아이들에게 '둥글게 둥글게' 동요를 아는 것이다. 거기다가 '오징어 게임'은 세계적으로 히트를 쳤기 때문에 부모로부터 많이 들었던 모양이다. 여기 인도네시아에서도 K - 팝과 K - 드라마 그리고 K - 푸드가 이들에게 얼마나 인기가 많은지 모른다. 이제 이들에게 새로운 K - 야구를 전파하려고 한다. 지금은 시작에 불과하지만 라오스와 베트남 그리고 캄보디아처럼 아무도 관심을 갖지 않았던 야구가 이제 그들에게 K - 야구가 얼마나 대단하고 위대함을 조금씩 알아가고 있다.

어린선수들이 구슬땀을 뻘뻘 흘리고 있을 때 젊은 세명의 지도아래 '오징어 게임'인 '술래잡기'에 어린선수들뿐만 아니라 함께 참석한 인도네시아 코치들도 배를 잡고 숨이 넘어간다. 나 또한 이들이 하는 '오징어 게임'을 보며 한바탕 크게 웃었다.

이런 기발한 발상은 젊은 코치들이 아니면 상상도 할 수 없는 일이다. 이들의 기발한 아이디어를 보며 앞으로도 나의 생각보다 이들의 생각을 존중하며 함께 달려가야 겠다는 생각을 한다. 이들이 이렇게 할 수 있었던 것은 세명의 지도자들이 유소년들과 함께 야구를 하기 때문에 그들의 눈높이에 맞추어 가르쳐야 어린선수들이 따라오기 때문에 많이 연구했다고 한다..

나영훈, 김세훈, 김대륙 후배들은 이번 '유소년 야구 아카데미'에 참석하면서 가장 중요하게 생각했던 부분이 “야구를 통해 아이들이 더 행복해 졌으면 좋겠다.” 그 마음이 참 깊었다. 재미있어야 흥미로 이어지고, 흥미가 있어야 더 많은 아이들이 그라운드로 달려나올 수 있다며, 어떻게든 인도네시아 유소년들에게 야구의 즐거움을 전하고 싶다고 했다. 이건 단순한 ‘기술 전수’가 아니라, 야구라는 스포츠를 통해 삶의 활력을 전하겠다는 마음이었다.

지난번에도 글을 썼지만 이들처럼 심지가 곧고, 사명감 하나로 묵묵히 걸어가는 젊은 지도자를 만나긴 쉽지 않다. 이들이 흔들림 없이 중심을 지켜가며 성장할 수 있도록 곁에서 도와주는 것, 그게 지금의 내가 해야 할 일이다.

후배라는 말이 때로는 가볍게 느껴질 수도 있다. 하지만 이 세 사람은 내게 있어 단순한 후배가 아닌, 정말 본받을 점이 많은 동료이자 지도자다. 이들이 인도네시아에서 보여준 진심은, 언젠가 대한민국 유소년 야구를 넘어 동남아 전체에 선한 영향력으로 퍼질 거라 믿는다. 이들이야 말로 한국 야구의 뿌리가 되어줄 사람들이다. 앞으로도 이 멋진 후배들과 함께 야구를 통해 더 많은 웃음과 희망을 나눌 수 있기를 바란다.

I am watching from the side, experiencing a lot that the thoughts of young people are much better these days than I think.

But what surprised me was to know the children's song 'round round' here in Indonesia. In addition, 'Squid Game' was a hit all over the world, so I guess I heard it a lot from my parents. Here in Indonesia, we don't know how popular K-pop, K-drama, and K-food are among them. Now we're trying to spread the new K-baseball to them. It's just the beginning, but baseball, which no one was interested in like Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, is now learning little by little how great and great K-baseball is to them.

When the young players were sweating profusely, not only the young players but also the Indonesian coaches who attended the "Squid Game" under the guidance of the three young players held their bellies and took their breath away. I also laughed out loud watching the "Squid Game" they played.

Such brilliant ideas are unimaginable to young coaches. Looking at their brilliant ideas, I think I should continue to respect their thoughts more than I think. When Na Young-hoon, Kim Se-hoon, and Kim Dae-ryuk attended the "Youth Baseball Academy," the most important part was, "I hope children will be happier through baseball." It was very deep. He said that having fun leads to interest, and that more children can run to the ground only when they are interested, and that he wanted to somehow convey the joy of baseball to Indonesian youth. This was not just a "technology transfer," but a desire to convey the vitality of life through a sport called baseball.

I wrote last time, but it's not easy to meet a young leader who has a straight wick and walks silently with a sense of duty like them. That's what I have to do now, to help them grow by maintaining their center without shaking.

The term "junior" can be taken lightly at times. However, these three people are not just juniors but colleagues and leaders who really have a lot to learn from. I believe that their sincerity in Indonesia will someday spread beyond Korea's youth baseball to the whole of Southeast Asia. These are the people who will be the roots of Korean baseball. I hope that I will continue to share more laughter and hope through baseball with these wonderful juniors.
