동남아에 내려간지 어느덧 11년이 된다. 지금도 잊지 못하는 것은 아무 정보도 없이 난생 처음 내려간 라오스. 그때가 2014년 11월 12일이었다.

물론 동남아 내려갈 때 필요한 모든 예방 주사는 다 맞고 내려갔다. SK와이번스 감독생활 끝나자마자 낯선 동남아에 내려갈 때만 해도 체력적으로나 정신적으로 모든것들이 바닥이 난 상태였다. 아니나 다를까 그만 댕기열에 걸리고 말았다. 지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것은 약 4개월 동안 아무것도 하지 못해 병원신세 졌던 기억이 있다.

두번째로 힘든 일은 통풍이었다. 50년 넘도록 나의 삶에서 통풍이 오리라 전혀 예상하거나 생각지도 못한 일이다. 동남아 라오스는 석해질이 많아 물을 우리나라처럼 마음대로 먹을 수 없는 나라다.

11년 전만 해도 모든것들이 다 열악한 환경에서 야구했기 때문에 요즈음처럼 풍족하게 물을 마실 수 없었다. 매일 40도가 넘는 뜨거운 날씨에 야구 한다는 것은 말처럼 쉽지 않았다.

구슬땀은 물처럼 흘려 30분만 지나면 유니폼이 다 젖을 정도다. 이렇게 많은 땀을 흘리면 흘린 만큼 물을 보충해 주어야 하는데 몇년 동안 그렇게 하지 못해 결국 요산 수치가 극에 도달해 한 밤중에 비명을 지르며 응급실에 실려갔다.

한번 온 통풍은 1년에 서너번 올 정도로 습관이 되 지방이나 해외로 나갈 때 가장 먼저 챙기는 것이 통풍 약이다.

3번째 힘든것은 '봉와직염'이다. 권혁돈 감독이 '봉와직염' 걸려 3주 동안 병원에 입원해 얼마나 아픈지 이미 권 감독한테 이야기 들어 알고 있었다. 내가 처음 '봉와직염' 걸린것이 '2023년 중국항저우아시안게임'에 참석 했을 때다.

갑자기 오른발과 장단지까지 허벅지 만큼 부어 올라 응급처치로 한국국가대표 야구단인 트레이너에게 찾아가 강한 항생제와 해열제 얻어 한국 들어올 때까지 밤마다 오열과 씨름했던 기억이 있다.

젊은 시절에는 강한 체력으로 인해 왠만한 바이러스는 이겨 내었다. 그러나 이제는 체력적으로나 많은 나이로 인해 바이러스 한테 조금씩 지고 있다. 이 모든것들을 인정하고 받아 드려야 함에도 불구하고 나의 욕심과 야망으로 인해 여전히 예전 현역시절처럼 국내와 해외로 지금도 열심히 달려가고 있다.

열악한 환경인 동남아는 우리가 생각하는것 이상으로 모든것들이 열악한 편이다. 지금도 잊혀지지 않는 것은 스텝진들과 함께 캄보디아에 들어가 야구 재능기부하러 들어갔다.

캄보디아 수도인 프놈펜에서 버스를 타고 두시간 들어가면 숙소와 야구장이 있다. 새벽 4시에 도착해 잠도 자지 못하고 두시간 뒤에 야구장 나가야 한다. 방에서 쉬고 있는데 천장과 벽에서 무언가 자꾸 움직인다.

불을 환하게 켜서 보았더니 작은 도마뱀이 천장과 벽 그리고 화장실에서 열심히 뛰어 놀고 있다. 거기다가 알 수 없는 작은 벌레들로 인해 잠을 이루지 못했던 날들이 몇일이 될 정도다. 특히 도마뱀으로 인해 한번도 불을 끄고 잠을 자지 못했다. 또 한가지는 연일 40도 되는 날씨로 인해 샤워하고 싶어도 샤워실에 물이 제대로 나오지 않아 인내를 갖고 기다려야 겨우 고양이 샤워 할 수 있다.

네번째는 강한 동남아 향인 '고수'로 인해 몇년 동안 제대로 밥을 먹지 못해 주로 찰밥과 쌀국수로 하루 하루 견딜 정도로 비위가 약한 편이다. 이렇게 몇년동안 동남아로 내려가는 바람에 생각지도 않은 혈당이 급속도로 올라갔다.

이번 인도네시아 '유소년 야구 아카데미'에 처음 참가한 권혁돈 감독과 3명의 후배들은 여기가 이전에 다녔던 라오스와 베트남 그리고 캄보디아에 비해 천국과 같다고 하니 모두 어리둥절 하며 잘 이해하지 못하는 눈치다.

'헐크파운데이션' 조성제 팀장이 권혁돈 감독한테 그동안 스텝진들이 어떻게 재능기부 하고 어떻게 야구 보급 했는지 상세하게 설명한다. 아무리 더워도 아무리 열악한 환경에서 야구해도 우리는 오직 야구 전파라는 사명을 같고 지금까지 아무 불평 하나없이 여기까지 달려왔다.

엄청난 더위와 물갈이로 인해 장정같은 스텝진들이나 심판들이 팍팍 쓸어지는 일은 너무나 흔한 일이다. 그래도 이들은 아픈 몸을 이끌고 끝까지 모든 행사를 마무리 한다. 이렇게 무리한 스텝진들과 심판진들은 한국에 들어와 몇날 몇일 병원 신세를 진다.

이렇게 고생한 스텝진들이나 심판 그리고 봉사진들은 두번다시 오지 같은 곳으로 가지 않을 것이라 생각 하겠지만 이들은 또다시 짐을 챙겨 비행기에 오른다. 도대체 이들이 이렇게 몸과 마음 그리고 수많은 자비를 드려 오지로 내려가는 이유는 무엇인가?

나 또한 동남아로 내려온지 11년이 되었다. 도마뱀과 벌레로 인해 잠을 이루지 못해도 40도가 넘는 불볕 더위도 그리고 통풍과 봉와직염 또 혈당이 급속도로  올라가도 나는 나의 삶이 다 할 때까지 하나님께서 나에게 선물로 준 야구를 갖고 나의 삶이 다하는 그날까지 달려 갈 것이다.

It has been 11 years since I went to Southeast Asia. What I still can't forget is Laos, which was the first time I went there without any information. It was November 12, 2014.

Of course, all the shots needed to go down to Southeast Asia were taken. As soon as the SK Wyverns manager was over, everything was running out physically and mentally when I went down to unfamiliar Southeast Asia. Sure enough, I got fever. What is still haunting is that I remember being hospitalized for about four months because I couldn't do anything.

The second most difficult thing was gout. This is something that I never expected or expected because gout will come from my life for more than 50 years. Southeast Asia and Laos are a country where people cannot drink water as they please because there is a lot of sunset.

Eleven years ago, everything was played in poor conditions, so I couldn't drink as much water as I do today. Playing baseball every day in hot weather over 40 degrees was not as easy as it sounds.

The sweat drips like water, and the uniform gets wet after 30 minutes. If you sweat this much, you have to replenish the water as much as you shed, but after failing to do so for several years, your uric acid level reached its peak and was taken to the emergency room screaming in the middle of the night.

Once gout comes, it becomes a habit that comes three or four times a year, but the first thing you take when you go abroad is gout medicine.

The third difficult thing is 'Bongwa Direct Infection'. Coach Kwon Hyuk-don was hospitalized for three weeks with 'Bongwa Direct Infection' and already knew how sick he was. The first time I got 'Bongwa Direct Infection' was when I attended the 2023 Hangzhou Asian Games in China.

Suddenly, his right foot and intestinal complex were swollen as much as his thighs, and he visited the trainer, the Korean national baseball team, as a first aid and wrestled with sobbing every night until he came to Korea with strong antibiotics and antipyretics.

In my youth, I overcame some viruses due to my strong physical strength. But now I am losing little by little to the virus both physically and at my old age. Despite having to acknowledge and accept all these things, I am still working hard at home and abroad, just like I did during my active days.

In Southeast Asia, a poor environment, everything is worse than we think. What is still haunting is that he entered Cambodia with the staff members to donate his baseball talent.

If you take a bus from Phnom Penh, the capital of Cambodia, you will find accommodation and a ballpark. I arrive at 4 a.m. and have to leave the ballpark in two hours without sleeping. I am resting in my room and something keeps moving on the ceiling and the wall.

When I turned on the light, I saw a small lizard running hard on the ceiling, walls, and in the bathroom. There were days when I couldn't sleep because of unknown small bugs. Especially, lizards have never been able to sleep with the lights off. Another thing is that even if you want to take a shower every day, you have to wait patiently to take a cat shower because the water doesn't come out properly in the shower.

Fourth, due to the strong Southeast Asian aroma of 'cilantro', I have not eaten properly for several years, and my stomach is weak enough to endure a day mainly with rice and rice noodles. As I went down to Southeast Asia for several years, my blood sugar rose rapidly without thinking about it.

Head coach Kwon Hyuk-don and three juniors, who first participated in Indonesia's "Youth Baseball Academy," are puzzled and do not seem to understand well because they say it is like heaven compared to Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia.

Team leader Cho Sung-je of "Hulk Foundation" explains in detail to head coach Kwon Hyuk-don how the staff members have donated their talents and distributed baseball. No matter how hot it is, no matter how poor the baseball is, we have the same mission of spreading baseball and have been running this far without any complaints.

It is very common for staff members and judges like marchers to be swept away due to the extreme heat and water coverings. Still, they lead their sick bodies to finish all events until the end. These overworking staff members and judges enter Korea and are hospitalized for days and days.

You may think that the staff members, judges, and Bong-photos who have suffered like this will never go to Oji again, but they pack their bags and board the plane again. Why on earth do they give their bodies, hearts, and countless mercy to go down to Oji?

It's been 11 years since I came down to Southeast Asia, too. Even if lizards and bugs keep me awake, the scorching heat of more than 40 degrees, and even if gout, cellulitis, and blood sugar rise rapidly, I will run to the day when my life ends with the baseball that God gave me as a gift.
