한국은 연일 37도를 넘나드는 폭염 속에 있다. 직장인들도, 공부하는 학생들도 모두 지쳐가고 있지만, 그런 더위에도 아랑곳하지 않고 오늘부터 베트남 호치민에서는 ‘제4회 대한민국 대사배 야구대회’가 시작되었다. 호치민 역시 낮에는 체감온도가 훨씬 높은 찜통더위로 인해 거리에 사람 하나 보이기 어려울 정도인데, 그 한가운데에서 야구가 시작된 것이다.

이번 대회의 전체 스케줄과 경기 운영, 심판 배정은 물론 이동까지 모두 최홍준 부장이 또다시 디렉터로 나서 총괄하고 있다. 헐크파운데이션의 최 부장은 국제 업무뿐 아니라 국내 야구 관련 일정까지 도맡아오며, 그간 몇 차례 대회에서 무리 끝에 병을 얻기도 했지만, 이번에도 본인의 책임을 다하기 위해 다시 아픈 몸을 이끌고 베트남에 입국해 현장에서 묵묵히 일하고 있다. 겉보기엔 단순한 운영처럼 보일지 모르지만, 누구나 할 수 있는 일이 아니라는 것을 현장에 있는 이들은 잘 알고 있다.

무더위 속에서도 땀을 비 오듯 흘리며 묵묵히 경기에 임하는 젊은 선수들을 보며, 야구인으로서 고마움과 존경심이 저절로 생겨난다. 호치민의 낮 기온은 36도를 넘고, 높은 습도 탓에 체감온도는 훨씬 더 높은데, 그런 상황 속에서도 선수들은 각자의 팀을 위해 달리고, 던지고, 치며 몸을 사리지 않고 최선을 다하고 있다. 이들이 흘리는 땀방울 하나하나가 이 대회의 진정한 가치를 보여주고 있다.

올해 대회는 작년보다 약 일주일 앞당겨진 일정으로, 7월 24일부터 나흘간 열린다. 짧은 기간이지만 모든 일정이 무사히 치러지고, 단 한 명의 부상자 없이 마무리되기를 간절히 바랄 뿐이다.

작년 ‘제3회 대한민국 대사배’는 7월 29일부터 사흘간 치러졌는데, 그때는 일정이 너무 빡빡해서 스태프와 심판들이 제대로 잠 한숨 못 자고, 새벽 3시 40분에 기상해 경기장으로 향하는 일이 반복되었다.

나는 당시 박효철 국가대표 감독, 그리고 심판진과 함께 새벽 4시 30분에 호텔을 출발해 해가 뜨기도 전인 5시에는 경기장에 도착해야 했고, 도착하자마자 어두운 그라운드 위에서 라인을 긋고, 마운드를 손질하고, 베이스를 설치하며 경기를 준비했다.

경기 시작은 아침 6시였고, 3군데 경기장에서 동시에 게임이 펼쳐졌기에 준비는 철두철미할 수밖에 없었다. 그 모든 걸 한 시간 안에 끝낸다는 건 상상 이상으로 힘든 일이었지만, 스태프와 심판들은 서로 한마음으로 움직였고, 각자 맡은 바를 끝까지 책임졌으며, 덕분에 선수들이 아무 불편 없이 경기를 시작할 수 있었다. 그렇게 흘렸던 땀과 헌신은 1년이 지난 지금도 잊히지 않는다.

이번 대회 역시 축구장을 개조해 사용하고 있는 터라, 정식 야구장은 아니지만 베트남 야구협회가 직접 마운드를 손보고, 한국에서 자비로 입국한 10명의 심판이 경기장을 지키고 있어 다행이라는 생각이 든다. 물론 시설은 여전히 열악하고 부족한 부분이 많지만, 대회를 앞두고 이른 시간부터 모인 선수들의 표정은 그 어느 때보다 진지하고 뜨거웠으며, 조경원 단장의 말에 따르면 경기장 환경이 어떻든 간에 이들의 투지와 열정은 그 모든 부족함을 덮고도 남을 만큼 대단했다고 한다.

경기 시작과 동시에 경기장은 활기로 가득 찼고, 매년 대회마다 한국에서 파견되는 심판들의 유니폼, 제스처, 스트라이크 콜은 야구에 익숙하지 않은 베트남 선수들과 관중들에게 신선한 충격으로 다가왔다. 절제된 동작과 강렬한 목소리, 우렁찬 콜은 야구의 품격을 보여주는 동시에, 이 대회가 단지 형식적인 이벤트가 아니라 진짜 스포츠 현장이라는 것을 느끼게 해주었다.

다행히 올해는 작년처럼 3일 안에 모든 경기를 끝내야 하는 강행군은 아니다. 하루 더 여유 있는 나흘 일정 덕분에 심판들도 하루에 다섯 경기씩 소화하지 않아도 되었고, 동시에 진행되는 세 경기장의 부담도 줄었다. 올해는 조경원 단장이 책임자로 현장에 투입되었는데, 과거 아마추어 심판위원장을 오래 지낸 그의 경험과 리더십 덕분에 모든 일정이 안정적으로 진행되고 있다.

무엇보다도 이번 대회를 가능하게 만든 주역은, 한국에서 자비로 입국한 심판진들이다. 하루 종일 햇볕 아래서 경기를 진행한 뒤, 늦은 시간 호텔로 돌아가는 길에서도 이들은 그날의 경기 내용을 차 안에서 함께 복기하며 웃음을 나눴다고 한다. 조경원 단장은 이 모습을 보며 “이들이야 말로 진짜 프로다”라고 말했고, 나 역시 그 말에 전적으로 공감한다.

그는 여러 번 강조했다. “이 심판들이 없었다면 이번 대회는 열릴 수조차 없었을 거예요.” 정말 그렇다. 이름을 남긴다. 조경원, 최홍준, 조성제, 박상호, 신현민, 임공식, 조상호, 김종구, 이유신. 이들이 있었기에 이번 대회가 가능했다.

박효철 국가대표 감독은 경기장 곳곳을 직접 돌며 선수 한 명 한 명을 꼼꼼히 체크하고 있다. 12월에 열릴 시게임(SEA Game)에 출전할 선수를 선발하기 위해 기록지를 직접 들여다보며, 땀을 흘려가며 경기장을 누비고 있다. 참가한 선수들도 이번 대회를 통해 국가대표로 발탁될 수 있다는 사실을 잘 알고 있기에, 그 어느 때보다 긴장감이 넘치고 있다.

멀리 베트남에서 들려오는 이 소식들을 통해 다시금 느낀다.

익숙하지 않은 땅에, 아무도 관심 갖지 않았던 야구라는 씨앗을 심었을 뿐인데, 그 씨앗이 싹을 틔우고, 줄기를 뻗어, 마침내 전국 대회라는 열매를 맺고 있다는 것을...

그 누구도 알아주지 않을 것 같았던 그 노력이 이제는 많은 청년들에게 꿈이 되었고, 많은 어른들에게 희망이 되었으며, 베트남 사회 곳곳에 야구라는 이름으로 새로운 비전을 선사하고 있다는 것을...

야구 하나로 이렇게 많은 사람들이 함께 움직이고, 기뻐하고, 변해간다.

결국, 세상을 바꾸는 건 ‘사람’이며, 그 사람들의 ‘진심’이다.

Korea is in a heat wave of more than 37 degrees Celsius every day. Both office workers and students studying are getting tired, but the "4th Korean Ambassador Baseball Competition" began today in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, regardless of the heat. Ho Chi Minh City also found it difficult to see a person on the street due to the scorching heat, which is much higher in the daytime, and baseball began in the middle of it.

Choi Hong-joon is in charge of the entire schedule of the tournament, the operation of the game, the allocation of referees, and the movement. Choi, the head of the Hulk Foundation, is in charge of not only international affairs but also domestic baseball-related schedules, and although he has been sick after a few competitions, he has entered Vietnam again to fulfill his responsibilities and is working silently on the spot. It may seem like a simple operation, but those in the field know that it is not something that everyone can do.

Watching young players silently playing in the game while sweating in the heat, gratitude and respect naturally arise as baseball players. Ho Chi Minh's daytime temperature exceeds 36 degrees, and the humidity is much higher, and despite this, the players are doing their best for their teams without sacrificing themselves by running, throwing, and hitting. Each drop of their sweat shows the true value of the competition.

This year's competition will be held for four days from July 24, which is about a week earlier than last year. Although it is a short period, I desperately hope that all the schedules will be completed safely and without a single injury.

Last year's "3rd Korean Ambassador Cup" was held for three days from July 29, when the schedule was so tight that staff and referees could not sleep properly, and they woke up at 3:40 a.m. and headed to the stadium repeatedly.

I left the hotel at 4:30 a.m. with national team coach Park Hyo-chul and the referee team and had to arrive at the stadium at 5 a.m., before sunrise, and as soon as I arrived, I drew a line on the dark ground, trimmed the mound, and set up the base to prepare for the game.

The start of the game was at 6 a.m., and the game was held at the same time in three stadiums, so the preparation had to be thorough. It was more difficult than you could imagine to finish it all in an hour, but the staff and the referees moved in one mind and took responsibility for each other's duties until the end, so the players were able to start the game without any inconvenience. The sweat and dedication that I have shed are still unforgettable a year later.

This tournament is also being used after remodeling the soccer field, so I think it is fortunate that the Vietnamese Baseball Association directly takes care of the mound, and 10 referees who entered the country at their own expense from Korea are guarding the stadium. Of course, the facilities are still poor and lacking, but the faces of the players gathered from early hours ahead of the tournament were more serious and hotter than ever, and according to Cho Kyung-won, the head of the team, their determination and enthusiasm were great enough to cover all the shortcomings regardless of the stadium's environment.

At the start of the game, the stadium was full of life, and the uniforms, gestures and strike calls of referees sent from South Korea every year came as a fresh shock to Vietnamese players and spectators unfamiliar with baseball. The understated movements, intense voices, and loud calls showed the dignity of baseball, while also making me feel that the tournament was not just a formal event but a real sports scene.

Fortunately, this year, it is not a compulsory force to finish all games in three days like last year. Thanks to the four-day schedule, which allows one more day, the referees did not have to play five games a day, and the burden on the three stadiums that run at the same time was reduced. This year, Cho Kyung-won, the head of the team, was appointed as the head of the team, and thanks to his experience and leadership as the chairman of the amateur referee committee for a long time in the past, all the schedules are going on stably.

Above all, the main players who made this competition possible were the judges who entered the country at their own expense from Korea. After playing in the sun all day, on their way back to the hotel late at night, they reportedly shared laughter while reproducing the contents of the game together in the car. Looking at this, Cho Kyung-won, the general manager, said, "They are real professionals," and I fully agree with that.

He stressed many times, "Without these judges, this tournament could not have even been held." Indeed, it does. It leaves a name. Cho Kyung-won, Choi Hong-jun, Cho Sung-je, Park Sang-ho, Shin Hyun-min, Lim Hyung-sik, Jo Sang-ho, Kim Jong-gu, and Lee Yoo-shin. This competition was possible because of them.

Korean national team coach Park Hyo-chul is meticulously checking each and every player in the stadium. He is sweating profusely looking at the records to select a player who will participate in the SEA Game in December. As he is well aware that he can be selected as a member of the national team through this year's event, he is more nervous than ever.

I feel it again through these news from far away Vietnam.

I just planted a seed called baseball, which no one was interested in, in an unfamiliar land, that it sprouted, stretched its stems, and finally bore the fruit of the national championship...

That effort that no one seemed to recognize has now become a dream for many young people, a hope for many adults, and a new vision in the name of baseball in all parts of Vietnamese society...

With baseball, so many people move together, rejoice, and change.

After all, it's 'people' that change the world, and it's their 'sincere'.
