< 팬클럽과의 특별한 만남 >

매년 8월이면 나의 생일 축하 도 할 겸  서로 안부도 전할 겸 오랜 팬들과 대구나 인천에서 미팅을 갖는다. 올해도 어김 없이 8월 16일, 대구에서 모임을 가졌다. 이른 아침부터 설레는 마음으로 서둘러 광명역으로 출발했다.

16일 이른 새벽에 사우나 멤버들과 이야기 나누며 오늘 일찍 대구로 내려가기 때문에 오래 있을 수 없다고 하니 '왜 대구 내려 가느냐?' 궁금해 한다. '오늘 대구에서 팬클럽 미팅이 있어 전국 각지에서 내려가고 올라 온다'고 하니 부러워 하면서도 모두 놀라는 것이다. 그도 그럴 것이 칠순을 바라보는 나이에, 팬클럽과 모임을 갖고 서로 안부를 묻는 사이라는 말에 모두가 놀라는 눈치다.

팬클럽 회원들이 이 모임을 위해 몇 달 전부터 모든 스케줄을 맞춘다는 이야기에 고맙기도 하고, 한평생 야구인으로 달려온 나의 삶이 얼마나 행복한지 새삼 느끼게 된다.

이날도 나의 팬클럽 회원들은 서울에서, 인천에서, 영주와 충청도와 삼천포에서 버스나 기차를 타고, 자동차로 부모님을 모시고 많은 회원들이 대구로 찾아와 주었다. 85세 어르신부터 8세 어린이까지 스무 명이 넘는 회원들이 모여 정말 즐거운 시간을 보냈다.

세월이 많이 흘렀음에도 불구하고 아직까지도 많은 팬들과 회원들이 선수 시절을 그리워하는 팬분들이 계시다는 게 야구인으로서 정말 뿌듯하고 행복하다.

라오스 북쪽의 도시 루앙프라방 제2의 야구팀 '레드 라이더(Red Rider) 팀을 위해 앞으로 온 힘을 다해 스텝진들과 함께 청소년들과 대학생 그리고 일반 사람들에게 야구를 보급하려고 한다. 이 모든것을 지켜본 팬클럽 회장인 정신지님께서 많은 도움을 주고 있다.

야구선수 이만수를 응원해 주었던 오래된 팬들이 주축이 된 <포에버 22>는 이제 가족 같은 분위기라 별다른 말이 없어도 눈빛만으로도 통하는 사이라 나를 빼고 함께 모여 밥도 먹고, 놀러도 가고 자주 모여 내가 서운할 지경이다. 선수와 팬으로 만나 이제는 함께 늙어가고 좋은 일, 의미 있는 일도 함께 하는 모임으로 오래오래 있어 주어서 나에게 큰 힘이 된다.

늦은 시간 돌아오는 기차 안에서 생각해 보니 지금의 내가 있기까지 사랑해 주고 응원해 주었던 수많은 사람들의 힘이 컸음을 새삼새삼 느끼게 된다.

요즈음 간혹 팬들에게 실망을 주거나, 내가 야구만 잘하면 된다라고 생각하는 선수가 있다면 얼른 마음을 바꾸기를 부탁한다. 나의 플레이가 아무리 멋져도 박수치고 응원하는 사람들이 없다면 어떨까? 야구가 직업인 프로선수라면 기량을 갈고 닦을 뿐 아니라 나를 응원해준 팬들까지 나의 야구 인생의 한 부분이라는 것을 잘 기억하기를 선배로서 부탁하고 싶다.
 
이번에도 어김없이 포에버22 회원들이 동남아로 뛰어 다니는 나의 모습을 보며 많은 회원들이 십시일반 큰 도움을 주고 있다. 동남아시아 야구 보급에 힘써 주고, 도와주시는 분들이 많이 계셔 지금도 큰 힘을 얻고 있다.

프로야구는 팬이 없다면, 좋은 선수도 없다. 위대하고 고마운 팬들이 있기에 이만수도 존재하는 것이다. 삶이 다하는 순간까지 많은 사람들 기억 속에서 좋은 사람으로 남겠다 다짐해 본다.

                                                                        <Special meeting with fan club>
 
Every August, I have meetings with my longtime fans in Daegu or Incheon to celebrate my birthday and say hello to each other. The meeting was held in Daegu on August 16 this year as well. I hurried to Gwangmyeong Station with excitement from the early morning.

When I talked with the sauna members early in the morning on the 16th and said I couldn't stay long because I was going to Daegu early today, I was wondering, "Why are you going to Daegu?" He said, "I have a fan club meeting in Daegu today, so I'm going to go down and come up from all over the country," and everyone was envious but surprised. Everyone seems to be surprised to hear that he is at the age of 70, having a fan club and a meeting to ask after each other.

I am grateful that the fan club members have been making all the schedules for this meeting for months, and I feel how happy my life as a baseball player has been.

On this day, my fan club members came to Daegu by bus or train from Seoul, Incheon, Yeongju, Chungcheong-do, and Samcheonpo. More than 20 members, from 85-year-old seniors to 8-year-old children, gathered and had a really good time.

As a baseball player, I am very proud and happy that there are still many fans and members who miss their days as players, despite the fact that many years have passed.

For the Red Rider team, the second baseball team in Luang Prabang, a city in northern Laos, we are trying to distribute baseball to teenagers, college students and ordinary people with all our energy. Jung Shin-ji, the president of the fan club who watched all this, is helping a lot.

"Forever 22", led by old fans who supported baseball player Lee Man-soo, is now like a family, so even if they don't say anything, they can communicate with each other just by looking at their eyes, so I'm sad that they gather together to eat, go out to play, and get together often. Meeting players and fans, now they grow old together and have good things and meaningful things together for a long time, which is a great help to me.

When I think about it on the train returning late at night, I feel anew that the power of so many people who loved and supported me until I am now was great.

These days, if there is a player who sometimes disappoints fans or thinks that all you have to do is play baseball well, please change your mind quickly. No matter how great my play is, what if there are no people who applaud and cheer for me? If you are a professional baseball player whose job is baseball, I would like to ask you as a senior to remember that not only you sharpen your skills but also the fans who supported you are a part of my baseball life.

This time again, many members are helping me a lot by watching me run around to Southeast Asia. There are many people who work hard and help spread baseball in Southeast Asia, and they are still gaining great strength.

In professional baseball, if there are no fans, there are no good players. Lee Man-soo exists because there are great and grateful fans. I promise to remain a good person in many people's memories until the moment my life ends. Let's see.
