어제(25일) 제주도에 있는 나의 친구 윤광우 목사로부터 전화가 왔다. 돌아오는 31일 일요일에 제주도로 내려와 강연해 줄 수 있느냐?는 것이다. 친구는 내가 꽉찬 스케줄로 인해 시간을 낼 수 없음을 잘 알지만 혹시나 시간을 내어 제주도 주민들에게 강연해 줄 수 있는지 확인차 전화했던 것이다.

제일 친한 친구인지라 어렵게 부탁했음을 나는 너무나 잘 알고 있기에 스케줄을 한번 조절해 본다고 했다. 나 또한 친구가 보고싶기도 하고 올해 한번도 제주도로 내려가지 않았기 때문에 어떻게 해서라도 스케줄을 조절해 제주도로 내려가고 싶었다. 일단 먼저 약속한 사람에게 양해를 구하고 하루 미루기로 했다.

예전에도 나의 친구 윤광우에 대해 글을 쓴 적이 있다. 나의 친구 윤광우는 고등학교 3학년 시절부터 알고 지내던 친구다. 지금으로부터 48년전 1977년 제 32회 전국청룡기대회에서 우승할 때 맞붙었던 팀이 인천의 동산고등학교였다. 그 당시만 해도 인천의 동산고등학교는 전국에서 가장 강한 팀이었다.

전국대회에서 유일하게 패전부활전이 있는 대회가 청룡기대회였다. 고등학교 3학년 시절 청룡기대회에서 패전부활전을 통해 우승하기란 정말 하늘의 별따기 만큼 어려운 시절이다. 그때 대구상고 팀이 우승할 때 우승과 함께 내가 4관왕을 차지 했다. 내가 타격 1위할 때 타격 2위 했던 친구가 바로 동산고등학교 윤광우 친구다.

이때부터 윤광우 친구와 인연이 되어 50년 가까이 친구로 지내고 있다. 윤광우 친구는 인천 동산고등학교에서 한양대학교로 진학하게 되었고 나는 대구상고에서 한양대학교로 진학하게 되었다 윤광우 친구와 가깝게 지내게 된 것도 한양대 동기로 입학하면서 우리는 진한 우정을 쌓아갔다.

나의 친구 윤광우는 한양대학교 1학년까지 야구하다가 야구를 그만 두고 대학 2학년부터 야구선수가 아닌 일반학생으로 공부하게 되었다. 물론 많은 사연이 있었지만 무엇보다 윤광우 친구의 독특한 성격으로 인해 지도자들이나 선배들이 그의 재능을 발견하지 못했던 것이다.

한양대학교 신문방송학과를 졸업하고 곧바로 한양그룹에 입사해 회사에서도 유능한 임원으로 활동했다. 그랬던 친구가 집안 대대로 기독교 신앙을 갖고 있어 잘 다니던 회사를 그만두고 늦은 나이에 신학교에 들어가 신학을 공부하고 지금은 목사로 활동한지 어느덧 30년이 되었다.

세상적인 관점에서는 모두가 부러워하는 대기업 임원 자리를 내팽겨치고 배고픈 신학생의 길을 선택한다는 것은 이해하기 어려운 일이었을 것이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 친구 윤광우 목사는 묵묵히 목회자의 길을  걸어가고 있다. 어느 누가 뭐라해도 세상 명예 다 내려놓고 십자가의 길을 걷는 나의 친구 윤광우, 우리는 서로를 위해 늘 기도한다. 서로가 걷는 길은 다르고  서있는 곳은 다르지만 우리가 바라보는 방향은 동일하다.

윤광우 목사는 나와 오랜 친구라 지금도 허물없이 지내는 사이다. 삼성라이온즈 선수시절과 미국시절 그리고 다시 SK와이번스 팀과 라오스 들어갔을 때 평생 친구를 위해 기도해준 멋진 친구다. 지금도 나와 가족을 위해 평생 기도의 끈을 놓지 않고 기도해주는 가장 멋진 친구다.

친구는 제주도에서 목회생활로 인해 서로 자주 만나지 못해도 서로 영적으로 기도하는 사이라 언제나 멀리 떨어져 있어도 늘 가까운 사이다.

이제는 서로 흰머리가 히끗히끗 많이 나고 서로 할아버지가 되었지만 친구를 만나면 여전히 어른이 아닌 대학시절로 타임머신을 타고 되돌아가는 느낌이다. 할아버지가 되어도 윤광우 목사는 나에게 영원한 대학시절의 젊은 친구다.

친구야~ 스스럼 없이 언제라도 불러 주어 고맙다. 친구가 불러 준다면 언제라도 달려갈 수 있다. 곧 멋진 친구를 만날 생각을 하니 벌써부터 마음이 설렌다.

Yesterday (25th), I got a call from my friend Rev. Yoon Kwang-woo in Jeju Island. Can you come down to Jeju Island and give a lecture on Sunday the 31st? My friend knows well that I can't make time due to my packed schedule, but he called to see if he could make time to give a lecture to the residents of Jeju Island.

I know very well that he asked me to make it difficult for him because he is my best friend, so I said I would try to adjust my schedule. I also missed my friend and never went to Jeju Island this year, so I wanted to adjust my schedule somehow and go down to Jeju Island. First of all, I asked the person who promised me to understand and decided to postpone it for a day.

I have written about my friend Yoon Kwang-woo in the past. I have known my friend Yoon Kwang-woo since he was a third grader in high school. When winning the 32nd National Blue Dragon Open in 1977, 48 years ago, Dongsan High School in Incheon faced off. At that time, Dongsan High School in Incheon was the strongest team in the country.

The only competition in the national competition where the defeat was held was the Blue Dragon Open. When I was a third grader in high school, it was a difficult time to win the Blue Dragon Championship through a losing match. At that time, when the Daegu Sang High School team won, I won four gold medals along with the victory. Yoon Kwang-woo from Dongsan High School was the friend who came in second when I was the first in hitting.

Since then, I have been friends with Yoon Kwang-woo for nearly 50 years. Yoon Kwang-woo's friend went to Hanyang University from Dongsan High School in Incheon, and I went to Hanyang University from Daegu Sang High School. When I entered Hanyang University as a classmate of Hanyang University, I became close to Yoon Kwang-woo's friend, and we built a strong friendship.

My friend Yoon Kwang-woo played baseball until his freshman year at Hanyang University, then quit baseball to study as a regular student, not as a baseball player in his sophomore year. Of course, there were many stories, but above all, leaders and seniors did not find his talent because of Yoon Kwang-woo's unique personality.

After graduating from Hanyang University's Department of Newspaper and Broadcasting, he joined Hanyang Group immediately and worked as a competent executive at the company. It has already been 30 years since my friend left the company he used to work well because he had Christian beliefs from generation to generation, entered a seminary at a late age, studied theology, and now works as a pastor.

From a global point of view, it would have been difficult to understand to abandon the position of executive of a large company that everyone envies and choose the path of a hungry seminary student. Nevertheless, my friend Pastor Yoon Kwang-woo is silently walking the path of a pastor. No matter what anyone says, my friend Yoon Kwang-woo, who walks on the path of the cross after putting down all the world's honor, we always pray for each other. Although the paths are different and where we stand, the direction we see is the same.

Pastor Yoon Kwang-woo is an old friend of mine, and we are still close to each other. He is a wonderful friend who prayed for his friend forever when he was a player of the Samsung Lions, during his time in the U.S., and when he moved to Laos with the SK Wyverns. He is still the coolest friend who constantly prays for me and my family forever.

Friends are always close even if they are always far away because they pray spiritually to each other even if they cannot meet often due to pastoral life on Jeju Island.

Now, we have a lot of gray hair and have become grandfathers, but when I meet a friend, I still feel like I'm going back to college, not an adult. Even as a grandfather, Pastor Yoon Kwang-woo is a young friend from my eternal college days.

My friend, thank you for calling me anytime without hesitation. I can run anytime if my friend calls me. I'm already excited to think of meeting a wonderful friend soon.
