< 나의 친구 최동원에게 >

나의 친구이자 만인의 친구, 위대한 최동원 투수가 우리 곁을 떠난지 벌써 14년이 된다. 지금 40대 혹은 5-60대 이상이라면 야구를 좋아하지 않더라도 ‘무쇠 팔’ 최동원(崔東原·1958~2011) 투수를 기억할 것이다.

선수 최동원은 근면과 성실, 열정과 집념으로 상징되는 ‘70~80년대 산업화 시대의 상징적인 모델이었다. 최동원 투수는 남에게 지기 싫어하는 승부 근성을 갖고 있다. 안쪽으로 들어오는 볼에 안타를 맞으면 다음 타석에서도 똑같이 안쪽 공으로 승부를 볼 정도로 승부사 기질이 있는 친구였다.

최동원투수를 처음 본 것은 중학교 2학년 시절이었다. 청주에서 열리는 문교부장관기 전국대회가 열렸다. 나는 대구중학교 대표로, 최동원투수는 부산 경남중학교 대표로 문교부장관기대회에 출전하게 되었다.

작은 체구지만 이 당시만 해도 상체와 하체가 기존의 선수들보다 상당히 발달된 몸이었다. 안경 낀 투수가 마운드에서 볼을 던지는데 중학생 엘리트선수들이 공에 손도 대지 못했던 기억이 난다. 뒤에서 구경한 나 또한 어떻게 중학생 선수가 고등학생 이상의 강하고 빠르게 볼을 던지는지 넋을 놓고 구경했던 기억이 난다.

최동원투수는 야구를 잘해 유급하지 않고 그대로 고등학교와 대학을 진학했지만 나는 중학교부터 야구를 시작했기 때문에 어쩔 수 없이 1년을 유급했다. 이렇게 동급생인 나는 고등학교 시절부터 최동원투수와 늘 1년 후배 선수가 되어 야구 선수로서의 길을 걸어왔다. 최동원투수는 경남고등학교로, 나는 대구상고로. 이후 최동원투수는 연세대학교, 나는 야구 명문 한양대학교로 진학하게 되었다. 프로에서는 최동원투수는 부산 연고의 롯데 팀으로, 나는 대구 연고의 삼성라이온즈에 입단하였고, 그렇게 어린시절부터 성인이 되어서까지 늘 투수와 타자로 숱하게 겨뤄오며 자랐다.

한국 야구사에 수많은 투수가 있지만, 개인적으로 최동원 투수를 첫손에 꼽는 이유는 남다른 근성과 야구에 대한 열정 때문이다. 그는 마운드 위에서 투수로서 자신의 '업무'를 시작하는 자세가 언제나 진지했다. 같은 시기를 지나온 선수로서 서로 대면하여 경기장에 서면 최동원 투수가 버릇처럼 하는 행동이 있다. 가장 먼저 로진백, 양말, 금테안경, 모자챙을 차례로 만지고 나서야 공을 던지던 그의 루틴은 아직도 나의 뇌리에 남아있다. 특히 독특한 투구폼은 요즈음 자라나는 투수들이나 일반 팬들에게는 독특하게까지 보일 정도다.

그는 아무리 멀리서 볼을 던지더라도 최동원 투수임을 한눈에 알아볼 수 있을 정도로 독특한 투구폼으로 볼을 던졌다. 왼팔과 왼발을 다이내믹하게 휘두르는 특유의 투구폼은 수많은 세월이 흘렀지만 지금도 여전히 최동원 투수의 시그니처로 남아있다.

최동원 투수의 주무기는 시속 155㎞에 육박하는 강속구와 폭포수처럼 떨어지는 커브다. 특히 커브는 알면서도 칠 수 없을 정도로 까다롭고 어려운 볼이다. 나의 친구인 최동원 투수를 만나면 늘 이야기 한다. '너 때문에 나의 프로야구 통산 타율이 3할이 되지 못했다'라며 농담 아닌 농담을 했던 기억이 있다. 그리고 최동원 투수의 또 다른 장점이라면 빠른 승부였다. 최동원 투수가 그날 게임에 나오면 늘 2시간 40분 안에 경기가 끝날 정도로 빠른 템포로 투구하는 스타일이다. 이런 빠른 템포로 인해 타자들이 경기 도중에 타임을 부를 정도였다.

한번은 대표팀에서 함께 배터리로 조를 이루어 연습하는데 최동원투수가 피칭 전에 몸을 풀 때 롱팩을 얼마나 많이 하는지 깜짝 놀란 적이 있었다. 좌측 폴대에서 우측 폴대까지 롱팩을 하는데 정말 놀랐다. 더불어 갖춰진 유연성 또한 놀라울 정도였다. 최동원투수뿐 아니라 메이저리그에서도 투수들은 누구 할 것 없이 롱팩을 많이 하는 편이다. 예전 구대성투수도 어깨를 다쳐 한참 재활 할 때도 가장 많이 던졌던 것이 롱팩이었다. 요즈음 젊은 투수들에게 건하고 싶은 것은 이들 최동원투수나 구대성투수 그리고 메이저리그 투수들이 던지는 것처럼 롱팩을 많이 했으면 한다. 이렇게 함으로서 어깨가 강해지고 좋은 바란스를 잡을 수 있다.

그러던 최동원투수가 드디어 나와 함께 밧데리로 경기장에서 함께 하게 되었던 시절이 있었다. 프로야구에서 가장 이슈가 되었던 대형 트레이드가 발생하게 되었던 것이다. 지금은 너무나 당연하게 생각하던 시절이었지만 프로야구가 출범하고 10년전까지만 해도 트레이드라는 것은 상상도 할 수 없는 시절이었다. 이 당시만 해도 트레이드 되어 간다는 것은 좋지 않은 인식들이 있어 팬들이나 선수들에게 큰 상처가 되곤 했던 시절이었다. 그런 시절에 상상도 할 수 없는 대형 트레이드가 발생하게 되었던 것이다. 삼성라이온즈 팀에서는 장효조선수와 김시진투수 롯데자이언츠 팀에서는 최동원투수와 김용철선수가 서로 맞 트레이드 되었던 것이다.

이것 하나로 인해 오랫동안 프로야구가 시끄러웠고 팬들로부터 서로 구단을 외면하는 사건이 한동안 벌어지곤 했다. 앞에서도 이야기 했지만 프로야구가 40년이 지난 지금은 트레이드가 너무나 당연시 된 시기지만 그 당시만 해도 트레이드 되어 간다는 것은 선수의 생명이 끝났다는 인식이 많았던 시절이다. 이렇게 서로 대형트레이드가 되어 각각 고향을 떠나서 야구한다는 것 자체가 선수들에게 크나큰 상처를 안겨 주었다. 선수들뿐만 아니라 팬들에게도 구단에 대한 배신감으로 인해 지금도 여전히 올드 팬들에게 회자가 되곤 한다.

대한민국 아마추어와 프로야구를 풍자했던 최동원투수가 기나긴 투병생활 중에서도 평생 해온 야구를 잊지 못해 운명할 때까지 야구를 그리워하며 손에서 볼을 놓지 않았던 모습이 지금도 생생하게 기억이 난다.

지금도 친구인 최동원투수의 다이나믹하고 힘있는 투구폼이 생각이 난다. 비록 현장을 떠나 우리 곁을 떠난지 오래 되었지만 최동원투수의 야구사랑과 정신은 영원히 잊을 수 없을 것 같다.

친구야 너무 보고 싶고 그립다.

It has already been 14 years since the great pitcher Choi Dong-won, my friend and everyone's friend, left our side. Those in their 40s or 5s and 60s and older will remember Choi Dong-won (1958-2011), the "iron arm" of the 崔, even if they don't like baseball.

Player Choi Dong-won was a symbolic model of the industrialization era in the '70s and '80s, symbolized by diligence, hard work, passion and tenacity. Choi Dong-won has the determination to win, which he does not want to lose to others. He had the temperament of an adventurer, as evidenced by the fact that if he got a hit on the ball coming in from the inside, he would watch the game with the ball in the next batter's box.

The first time I saw Choi Dong-won pitcher was when I was in the second year of middle school. The national competition of the Minister of Education was held in Cheongju. I represented Daegu Middle School and Choi Dong-won represented Busan Gyeongnam Middle School and participated in the Minister of Education competition.

Although he was small, his upper and lower body were considerably more advanced than existing players at that time. I remember that a pitcher wearing glasses threw a ball on the mound, but the elite middle school players couldn't even touch the ball. I also remember watching from behind and watching how a middle school player threw a ball stronger and faster than a high school student.

Choi went to high school and college without being paid because he was good at baseball, but I started playing baseball in middle school, so I had no choice but to pay one year. As such, I have always been a baseball player a year younger than Choi since I was in high school. Choi Dong-won went to Gyeongnam High School, I went to Daegu Sang High School, and Choi went to Yonsei University, and I went to Hanyang University, a prestigious baseball school. In the professional league, Choi Dong-won joined the Lotte team from Busan, and I joined the Samsung Lions from Daegu, and from childhood to adulthood, I always competed as a pitcher and batter.

There are many pitchers in the history of Korean baseball, but the reason why I personally pick Choi Dong-won as my first hand is because of his extraordinary grit and passion for baseball. He has always been serious about starting his "work" as a pitcher on the mound. As a player who has passed the same period, Choi Dong-won has a habit of throwing the ball after facing each other on the field. His routine of throwing the ball after touching the rosin bag, socks, gold-rimmed glasses, and hat-brimmed glasses remains in my mind. In particular, the unique pitching form is even unique to pitchers and general fans who grow up these days.

No matter how far he throws the ball, he throws the ball in a unique pitching form that recognizes Choi Dong-won at a glance. His unique pitching form, which dynamically swings his left arm and left foot, remains Choi's signature even now, after many years.

Choi's main weapon is a fastball that speeds up to 155 kilometers per hour and a curve that falls like a waterfall. In particular, a curveball is so tricky and difficult that you cannot hit even though you know it. I always talk to my friend Choi Dong-won. I remember him jokingly saying, "Because of you, my overall batting average in professional baseball did not reach 30%. Another strength of Choi was that he pitched fast enough to end the game within 2 hours and 40 minutes. When Choi appears in the game on the day, he throws the ball at such a fast tempo that batters call time during the game.

Once, I was surprised how much Choi Dong-won does long packs when warming up before pitching while practicing in a battery group with the national team. He was playing long packs from the left pole to the right pole, and I was really surprised. Moreover, the flexibility was remarkable. Not only Choi but also other pitchers in the Major League Baseball tend to wear long packs a lot. Long packs were thrown the most frequently by Koo Dae-sung during his rehabilitation process with a shoulder injury. What I want to deal with young pitchers these days is to do as many long packs as Choi Dong-won, Koo Dae-sung, and Major League pitchers do. By doing so, you can strengthen your shoulders and catch good variances.

Then there was a time when Choi Dong-won finally joined me in the stadium as a battery. A large trade, which was the most important issue in professional baseball, occurred. It was a time when I took it for granted now, but until 10 years ago when professional baseball was launched, I could not imagine a trade. At this time, there were bad perceptions that it was being traded, so it was a time when it used to be very hurtful to fans and players. In such a time, unimaginable large-scale trade occurred. On the Samsung Lions team, Jang Hyo-jo and Kim Si-jin, on the Lotte Giants team, Choi Dong-won and Kim Yong-chul were traded.

Because of this one thing, professional baseball has been noisy for a long time, and there have been cases where fans turn away from the club for a while. As mentioned earlier, 40 years after professional baseball, trade has become so natural, but at that time, there was a lot of recognition that the player's life was over. The fact that they became large-scale transactions with each other and played baseball away from their hometowns hurt the players greatly. Not only the players but also the fans are still talked about by the old fans because of the sense of betrayal of the club.

I still vividly remember that Choi Dong-won, who satirized Korean amateur and professional baseball, missed baseball and did not let go of his ball until his fate because he could not forget the baseball he had played his whole life.

I still remember the dynamic and powerful pitching form of my friend Choi Dong-won. Although it has been a long time since he left the scene and left our side, I think I will never forget Choi Dong-won's love and spirit for baseball.
