< 나의 영웅 루 게릭 >

나는 남들보다 늦게 야구를 시작했다. 그러다 보니 모든 것이 낯설고 무엇을 어떻게 해야 최고의 선수가 되는지 잘 모른 체 야구를 한 것 같다. 그런 나에게 누님은 야구의 눈을 뜨게 해준 분이다.

누님은 야구하는 동생에게 조금이나마 도움을 주기 위해 서점이란 서점은 다 둘러본 뒤 귀한 야구책을 여러 권 구입해 주었다. 당시만 해도 야구책은 대부분 번역이 되지 않은 영어 원서였다.

대학생이었던 누님은 야구하는 동생을 위해 몇날 며칠, 아니 몇달을 걸쳐 그 책을 번역해 주었다. 누님 덕분에 선진야구인 미국야구를 알게 되었고, 특히 가장 인상적인 미국 선수가 '루 게릭'이었다.

'루 게릭' 선수의 화려한 성적에 놀랐을 뿐 아니라, 너무 젊은 나이인 38살에 루 게릭 병으로 세상을 떠났다는 소식에 더욱 놀랐다. 그 때부터 '루 게릭' 선수를 마음의 영웅으로 삼고 선수생활을 했다.

누님이 두 번째로 번역해준 책은 '테드 윌리엄스' 선수다. 공교롭게도 두 선수가 서로 라이벌인 보스턴 레드삭스 팀과 뉴욕 양키스 팀 소속이었다. 누님이 세 번째로 번역해준 책은 '베이브 루스' 선수 관련 책이었다.

어린 시절에 누님이 번역해준 책들로 인해 야구를 시작했고, 나이가 많이 든 지금 돌아보아도 언제나 이들을 생각하며 꿈을 키워 나갔던 기억이 있다. 어린 시절에 접한 전설적인 선수들의 스토리가 있었기에 현장을 떠난 지금도 국내와 해외로 다니면서 야구 재능기부를 하면서 어린 선수들과 젊은이들에게 꿈과 희망을 전해 줄 수 있게 되었다.

이들은 나의 인생에서 영원히 잊을 수 없는 영웅으로 자리잡고 있다. 특히 '루 게릭' 선수를 잊을 수 없는 것은 나의 지인 두분이 루 게릭 병으로 힘든 시간을 보내고 있기 때문이다.

1939년 미국 메이저리그 베이스볼의 유명 타자였던 '루 게릭'은 근위축측삭경화증이라고 불리는 병 때문에 은퇴하였고 죽음에 이르면서, 그 병에 루 게릭 병이라는 별칭이 생겼다. 사실 이 병이 세상에 알려진 것은 1830년이며, 1869년 프랑스 의사 장 마르틴 샤코(Jean-Martin Chartcot)에 의해 최초로 보고되었으며, 1874년 명명 되었다고 한다.

2000년 시카고 화이트 삭스 코치로 활동할 때 처음으로 뉴욕 양키스 팀과 원정경기 갔을 때의 흥분과 설레임, 그리고 감격을 나의 삶에서 영원히 잊을 수가 없다. 경기 전날 잠을 제대로 이루지 못하고 뜬눈으로 지새웠던 기억이 난다. 그것은 다름이 아니라 나의 영웅들이 활동했던 뉴욕 양키스 구장에 가는 날이기 때문이다.

양키스 구장을 들어서는 순간 가슴이 매여 오는 느낌은 70을 바라보는 지금도 잊을 수가 없었다. 심장이 급하게 뛰고 흥분이 되어 제대로 걸어 갈 수 없을 정도였다. 지난번 글에서도 썼지만 양키스 구장 센터필드 뒤편에는 양키스 팀에서 활동했던 전설적인 선수들의 동상들이 서 있다.

아무도 보지 않기에 동상 가까이 가서 동상을 얼싸 안았던 기억이 있다. 거기에는 전설적인 '베이브 루스' 선수, '조 디마지오' 선수, '루 게릭' 선수, '요기 베라' 선수 등 수많은 전설적인 선수들의 동상이 걸려 있다.

그런데 미국 시카고 화이트 삭스 팀에서 코치 생활할 때 나에게 가장 많은 도움을 주고 지금까지 서로 연락하며 지내는 형님이 계신다. 그 형수님의 남동생이 '루 게릭' 병으로 오랜 시간 투병하다가 하늘나라에 가셨다. 그 형수님의 남동생은 미국에서 나와 함께 야구장을 찾아 응원하면서 좋은 시간을 보내기도 했는데, 결국 '루 게릭' 병을 앓고 하늘나라로 가셨다.

SK 와이번스 팀을 끝으로 인도차이나반도인 라오스와 베트남, 그리고 캄보디아로 내려가 야구를 보급할 때 내가 아끼고 좋아하는 어떤 아우님의 와이프가 '루 게릭' 병으로 오랜 시간 침대에서 꼼짝하지 못하고 있다는 소식을 듣고 아우님 집으로 찾아갔다. 제수씨한테 큰 위로가 되지 않지만 제수씨의 손을 잡고 기도했던 적이 있다.

지금도 아우님은 사랑하는 와이프를 위해 이 세상에서 좋다는 것은 다 해 준다고 한다. 힘들어 하는 와이프를 위해 가끔 와이프를 차에 태워 들로 바닷가로 구경가고 싶다고 했다. '루 게릭' 선수는 화려한 선수생활을 할 때 베이스를 돌다가 넘어져 병원에 갔는데 '루 게릭' 병이라는 것을 알게 되었다고 한다.

아우님이 제수씨와의 연애시절, 그리고 직장생활 할 때 묵묵하게 평생 자기 뒷바라지를 해준 와이프 스토리를 말할 때 나도 모르게 눈물이 흘렀다. 지금도 아내를 위해 헌신하고 사랑하는 모습을 볼 때면 요즈음 정말 보기 드문 훌륭한 남편이라는 생각이 든다.

'루 게릭' 선수뿐만 아니라 수많은 전설적인 선수들로 인해 부족하고 연약한 내가 중간에 포기하지 않고 여기까지 달려올 수 있었다. 나약하고 연약한 내가 이렇게 할 수 있었던 원동력도 그들의 영향을 받았기 때문이다. '루 게릭' 그는 나에게 큰 비젼과 꿈을 준 위대한 선수다.

My sister bought me several valuable baseball books after browsing all the bookstores called bookstores to give my younger brother a little help. Most baseball books were not translated into English at that time.

My sister, who was a college student, translated the book for my younger brother who played baseball for days, days, or months. Thanks to my sister, I got to know the advanced baseball league in the United States, and the most impressive American player was Lou Gehrig.

Not only was he surprised by his brilliant performance, but he was even more surprised at the news that he died of Lou Gehrig's disease at the young age of 38. Since then, he has played with Lou Gehrig as his hero.

The second book she translated was "Ted Williams." Coincidentally, the two players were from rival Boston Red Sox teams and New York Yankees teams. The third book she translated was "Baby Ruth."

When I was young, I started playing baseball with the books my sister translated, and even when I look back on my old age, I always thought about them and developed my dreams. Because of the story of legendary players who experienced childhood, even after leaving the field, I was able to deliver dreams and hopes to young players and young people by donating baseball talents at home and abroad.

They are the heroes that I will never forget in my life. Especially, I can't forget 'Lou Gehrig' because two of my acquaintances are having a hard time with Lou Gehrig's disease.

In 1939, a famous hitter in the U.S. Major League Baseball, 'Lou Gehrig' retired from a disease called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, which led to his death, giving him the nickname 'Lou Gehrig's disease. In fact, it was only in 1830, and it was first reported to the world by French physician Jean-Martin Chartcot in 1869, and it was named in 1874.

When I was a Chicago White Sox coach in 2000, I will never forget the excitement, excitement, and emotion of my first away game against the New York Yankees. I remember staying up all night the day before the game because I couldn't sleep well. It's because it's the day I go to the New York Yankees Stadium, where my heroes worked.

The moment I entered the Yankees stadium, I could not forget the feeling of being tied up even now as I was looking at 70. My heart was racing and I was so excited that I couldn't walk properly. As I wrote in the last article, statues of legendary players who played for the Yankees team stand behind Center Field.

I remember going close to the statue and hugging it because no one was watching. There are numerous statues of legendary players, including legendary Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, and Yogi Vera.

However, there is an older brother who helped me the most while coaching the Chicago White Sox in the United States, and who has been in contact with each other so far. The sister-in-law's younger brother died after battling Lou Gehrig's disease for a long time. The sister-in-law's younger brother spent a good time in the United States visiting and cheering for me, but eventually he suffered from Lou Gehrig's disease and went to heaven.

After the SK Wyverns team, I went down to Laos, Vietnam, and Cambodia, the Indochina Peninsula, and when I heard that my favorite brother's wife was stuck in bed for a long time due to Lou Gehrig's disease, so I went to his house. It's not a great comfort to Jesu, but I held her hand and prayed.

Even now, he says he does everything that is good in the world for his wife. For his wife, who is struggling, he sometimes said he wanted to drive his wife to the beach to take a look. Lou Gehrig went to the hospital after falling while running around the base during his stellar career, and he learned it was Lou Gehrig's disease.

Tears flowed unknowingly when my brother told me the story of his wife, who silently cared for him all her life during her love life with Jesu and her work life. When I see how devoted and loved my wife is, I think she is a great husband, which is rare these days.

Not only 'Lou Gehrig' but also a number of legendary players allowed me to come this far without giving up. The reason why I was weak and vulnerable was also influenced by them. 'Lou Gehrig' is a great player who gave me great vision and dreams.
