어제(18일) 헐크파운데이션 최홍준 부장으로부터 문자가 왔다.

“감독님!
우리와 함께한 인도네시아 프로젝트로 국민체육진흥공단에서 진행하는 드림투게더에서
다른 나라를 제치고 우그라세나가 우승을 차지했습니다.
큰 한국 행사에서 우승자로서 결과 발표를 하니 시간 내시어 다 함께 축하해줬으면 좋겠습니다.
코치진에게도 알려두었습니다.”

내가 인도네시아의 우그라세나(Ugrasena)를 처음 알게 된 것은 서울대학교 드림투게더마스터(DTM) 특강에서였다. 지금도 생생히 기억난다. 2023년 5월 25일, 서울대 국제스포츠행정가양성사업단(DTM)은 나를 초청해 특강을 열었다.

DTM 학생들은 개발도상국 출신으로, 차세대 스포츠 행정가를 꿈꾸며 서울대 글로벌스포츠매니지먼트 석사과정에서 공부하고 있다. 스포츠 산업·정책·개발 관련 수업을 듣고, 실제 사례를 통해 행정가로서의 역량을 키운다. 비교과 활동으로 진행되는 특강은 학생들이 가장 관심 있는 분야의 인사를 초청해 경험과 지식을 나누는 시간이다.

그날 나는 봄학기 첫 번째 특강 연사로 섰다. 언론은 나를 이렇게 소개했다.

“한국프로야구 1호 안타·타점·홈런의 주인공. 삼성 라이온즈에서 16년간 선수 생활 후 SK 와이번즈 감독을 역임.
2014년 사단법인 헐크파운데이션 설립 후 라오스, 베트남 등지에서 야구 저변 확대에 앞장서고 있다.”

언론은 또 이렇게 덧붙였다.

“라오스 최초 야구팀 창단, 베트남 야구협회 설립 등 이만수 이사장의 활동은 스포츠를 통한 국제개발협력의 모범 사례이며, DTM이 추구하는 철학과 일치한다.”

그날 강연에서 내 눈을 사로잡은 사람이 바로 우그라세나였다.
강연이 끝난 뒤에도 그는 내 곁을 떠나지 않고 많은 질문을 쏟아냈다. 여러 나라에서 온 학생들 중에서도 유독 그의 열정이 기억에 남았다. 그리고 올 7월, 그와 함께 인도네시아에서 야구 아카데미를 열 줄은 상상도 못 했다.

사실 우그라세나는 인도네시아 야구 국가대표 출신으로 2011년 동남아시안게임에서 은메달을 따낸 선수다. 한국에 와서도 서울대 야구부와 함께 운동하며 공부를 병행했고, “한국 야구의 전설 이만수 이사장을 직접 뵐 수 있어 설렌다”고 인터뷰했던 기억이 난다.

서울대 국제스포츠행정가양성사업단 강준호 단장은 이렇게 말했다.

“라오스, 베트남 등에서의 이만수 이사장의 경험은 개발도상국 학생들에게 큰 울림과 영감을 줄 것입니다. 졸업 후에도 그들이 꿈을 향해 나아갈 때, 오늘 특강의 제목처럼 ‘Never ever give up’을 기억하길 바랍니다.”

2013년부터 운영 중인 DTM은 개발도상국의 스포츠 발전에 기여할 차세대 스포츠 행정가를 양성하고, 글로벌 스포츠 네트워크를 구축하는 것을 목표로 한다. 매년 아시아, 아프리카, 오세아니아, 동유럽, 중남미 국가에서 20여 명의 학생들이 문화체육관광부와 국민체육진흥공단의 지원으로 서울대에서 공부한다.

그리고 오늘, 그때 내 강연을 열심히 듣던 우그라세나가 드림투게더에서 우승 소식을 전해왔다.

“강의실에서 싹튼 ‘Never Ever Give Up’의 정신이, 마침내 인도네시아에서 결실을 맺었다.이 우승은 한 사람의 꿈이 만든 기적이며, 동남아 야구의 새로운 희망이다.”

Yesterday (18th), I got a text message from Choi Hong-joon, the head of Hulk Foundation.

"Director!
We're working on a project in Indonesia that's being carried out by the Korea Sports Promotion FoundationUgrasena beat another country to win the championship.As a winner of a big Korean event, I hope you will take the time to celebrate the results together.I've informed the coaches as well."

The first time I got to know Ugrasena from Indonesia was at a special lecture at Seoul National University's Dream Together Master. I still vividly remember it. On May 25, 2023, the Seoul National University DTM invited me to give a special lecture.

DTM students are from developing countries and are studying at Seoul National University's master's course in global sports management, dreaming of becoming the next generation of sports administrators. They take classes related to the sports industry, policy, and development, and develop their capabilities as administrators through actual examples. The special lecture, which is conducted as a comparison and activity, is a time for students to share their experiences and knowledge by inviting people from the fields they are most interested in.

That day, I stood as the first special lecture speaker for the spring semester. The media introduced me like this.

"The hero of the first hit, RBI and home run in the Korean professional baseball league. After 16 years of playing for the Samsung Lions, he served as manager of the SK Wyverns.Since the establishment of the Hulk Foundation in 2014, it has been taking the lead in expanding the base of baseball in Laos and Vietnam”

The media also added.

"Chairman Lee Man-soo's activities, including the establishment of the first baseball team in Laos and the establishment of the Vietnam Baseball Association, are best practices for international development cooperation through sports and are consistent with the philosophy pursued by DTM."

It was Ugrazena who caught my eye at the lecture that day.Even after the lecture, he did not leave me alone and asked me a lot of questions. Among students from all over the world, his passion was especially memorable. And I never imagined that I would open a baseball academy with him in Indonesia this July.

In fact, Ugrasena is a former member of the Indonesian national baseball team and won a silver medal at the 2011 Southeast Asian Games. Even when he came to Korea, he worked out with the Seoul National University baseball team at the same time, and I remember interviewing him, "I'm excited to see Korean baseball legend Lee Man-soo in person."

Kang Joon-ho, head of the Seoul National University International Sports Administrator Training Project, said.

"Chairman Lee Man-soo's experience in Laos, Vietnam, etc. will resonate and inspire students in developing countries. When they move toward their dreams even after graduation, I hope they remember 'Never give up' as the title of today's special lecture."

In operation since 2013, the DTM aims to cultivate next-generation sports administrators who will contribute to the development of sports in developing countries and to establish a global sports network. Every year, about 20 students from countries in Asia, Africa, Oceania, Eastern Europe, and Latin America study at Seoul National University with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Korea Sports Promotion Foundation.

And today, Ugrasena, who listened to my lecture hard at the time, delivered the news of the victory at Dream Together.

"The spirit of 'Never Ever Give Up' that sprouted in the classroom finally paid off in Indonesia. This victory is a miracle of one's dreams and a new hope for Southeast Asian baseball."
