< 꿈꿀 수 있다면, 그 꿈은 이루어진다 >

9월 들어와 여기 저기 좋은 소식들이 이어지고 있다. 김세훈 회장은 인도네시아 야구협회와 협약식을 갖고, 상호 협력을 통한 야구 인프라 확충, 체육교육 과정 구성, 학교 스포츠클럽 활성화 등 다양한 발전 방향을 논의했다. 한국 야구가 걸어온 길을 되짚으며 하나의 모델 삼아, 인도네시아를 비롯한 동남아 국가들과 함께 새로운 미래를 설계하는 과정이다.

인도네시아는 이미 동남아시아에서 가장 탄탄한 야구 기반을 갖춘 나라 중 하나다. 앞으로 중요한 것은 발전의 속도와 방향이며, 그 과정에서 한국 야구의 경험은 소중한 길잡이가 될 것이다.

두번째 소식은 중국 위해시에 있는 위해중세외국인학교에 최정중 감독이 새롭게 야구단을 이끌게 되었다. 중국은 지금 한창 야구의 붐이 일어나고 있다. 그러나 최정중 감독이 들어간 위해시는 아직 야구가 많이 보급 되지 않은 상태다. 모든 것들이 낯설고 하나씩 이들에게 지도해야 한다.

중국 위해시는 한국인들에게도 널리 알려진 도시다. 한국 기업이 많이 들어가 있고, 사업가나 골프를 좋아하는 사람들에게는 힐링을 하기 위해 한번쯤 가고 싶어 하는 도시라고 한다. 중국 북쪽 동해 부근에 위치한 위해시는 현재 내가 살고 있는 인천시와 위도상 같은 위치에 있다. 이 도시에 위치한 위해중세외국인학교에서 정식으로 야구팀을 운영하기 위해 올 12월달에 창단을 한다고 한다. 아무도 예상하지도, 기대하지도 않았던 '위해중세외국인학교' 창단은 대한민국뿐만 아니라 중국  당국에서도 많은 관심을 갖고 있는 상태다.

야구인으로서 늘 보급을 꿈꾸었던 곳이 중국이다. 거대한 중국땅에 야구를 보급한다면 앞으로 거대한 세계적인 팀이 탄생할 것이라는 조심스레 예상해본다. 지난 11년 동안 라오스와 베트남 그리고 캄보디아와 인도네시아에 야구를 전파하고 꿈에만 그리던 중국 땅에 새롭게 야구팀이 탄생하게 되었다는 사실에 야구인의 한사람으로서 얼마나 보람을 느끼는지 모른다.

최정중 감독이 중국 위해시에 야구 팀을 창단하기 위해 위해중세외국인학교 이용규 이사장과 많은 대화를 나누었다고 한다. 최정중 감독한테 당부하고 싶은 것은 절대 서둘러서는 안 된다는 점이다. 천천히 멀리 보고 한 걸음씩 가야 한다. 중국 위해시는 베이징처럼 야구가 많이 활성화 되어 있지 않기 때문에 여러가지로 열악한 상황이지만 야구장은 생각외로 잘 갖추어져 있다고 한다. 이곳은 야구 교육이 꼭 필요한 곳이고 무한한 가능성을 갖고 있는 도시다.

최정중 감독은 “어린아이들과 청소년들 그리고 현지인들에게 여가 활동 그리고 건전하고 협동심 , 희생과 예의를 가르치며 야구를 보급하는데 최선을 다하겠다”며 다짐한다. 이제 첫발을 내디딘 최정중 감독은 야구 팀을 위해 조금이라도 편안하게 야구를 할 수 있도록 미약한 힘이지만 야구인의 한사람으로서 최선을 다하겠단다. 이제 첫발을 내딘 최정중 감독의 포부처럼, 학생들이 야구를 통해 희망을 갖고 꿈을 가지게 될 것이고 또 미래에 대한 열정과 비전을 품으며 앞으로 나아갈 것이라 믿는다. 최 감독은 학생들이 먼 미래의 청사진들을 그려가는 것을 보며 지도자로서 보람을 갖게 된다고한다.

최정중 감독한테 당부하고 싶은 것은, 생소한 야구를 학생들에게 가르친다는 것이 절대 순탄한 길이 아니지만, 끝까지 포기하지 말라는 것이다. 자신하건대 힘든 일만 있는 것은 아니다. 포기하고 싶고, 힘들어서 도망가고 싶을 때, 먼저 이 길을 걸었던 나를 보며 “ Never ever give up“ 정신으로, 끝까지 그 길을 완주하길 바란다.

Since September, good news has continued here and there. Chairman Kim Sei-hoon held an agreement ceremony with the Indonesian Baseball Association to discuss various development directions, including expansion of baseball infrastructure through mutual cooperation, formation of physical education courses, and revitalization of school sports clubs. Reflecting on the path taken by Korean baseball, Kim Sei-hoon is in the process of designing a new future with Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries as a model.

Indonesia already has one of the strongest baseball bases in Southeast Asia. What will be important in the future is the speed and direction of development, and the Korean baseball experience will be a valuable guide in the process.

The second news is that Choi Jung-joong will lead a new baseball team at the Weihai Middle School for Foreigners in Weihai City, China. In China, there is a baseball boom right now. However, in Weihai City, where Choi Jung-joong joined, baseball has not been widely distributed yet. Everything is unfamiliar and you have to teach them one by one.

Haihai City in China is also widely known to Koreans. It is said that it is a city that contains a lot of Korean companies, and for businessmen and golf lovers, they want to go there at least once to heal. Located near the East Sea in northern China, Weihai City is in the same location as Incheon City, where I currently live. It is said that it will be established in December this year to officially operate a baseball team at the Weihai Middle Foreign School located in the city. The establishment of the 'Haihae Middle Foreign School', which no one expected or expected, is attracting a lot of attention not only from the Republic of Korea but also from the Chinese authorities.

As a baseball player, China has always dreamed of distributing it. If baseball is distributed to a huge Chinese land, I carefully predict that a huge global team will be created in the future. I don't know how rewarding I am as a baseball player to spread baseball to Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia, and Indonesia over the past 11 years, and to have a new baseball team on the Chinese land that I dreamed of.

It is said that Choi Jung-joong talked a lot with Lee Yong-kyu, chairman of the Middle and High School for Foreigners, to establish a baseball team in Weihai, China. What I want to ask coach Choi Jung-joong is that you should never hurry. You should take your time and look far away and take one step at a time. The Chinese city of Weihai is in a poor situation because baseball is not as active as Beijing, but the baseball stadium is said to be better than expected. This is a place where baseball education is essential and has infinite possibilities.

Coach Choi Jung-joong vowed, "I will do my best to spread baseball by teaching young children, teenagers, and locals leisure activities, sound cooperation, sacrifice and courtesy." Choi Jung-joong, who has now taken his first step, said, "I will do my best as one of the baseball players, even though it is a weak force to play baseball comfortably for the baseball team. Just like Choi Jung-joong's ambition, who has now taken his first step, I believe that students will have hope and dreams through baseball and will move forward with passion and vision for the future. Choi says it is rewarding as a leader to see students draw blueprints for the distant future.

What I want to ask coach Choi Jung-joong is that teaching unfamiliar baseball to students is never a smooth path, but don't give up until the end. Confidently, it is not only hard work. When you want to give up and run away from being tired, look at me who walked this path first and finish it with the spirit of "Never give up."
