< 라오스 사역의 무게와 김한근 선배의 결단 >

어제 (29일), 나는 김한근 선배를 찾아뵙고 앞으로의 동남아 야구 사역에 대해 깊은 대화를 나누었다. 야구를 보급하는 데 있어 무엇보다 중요한 것은 전문적인 지도자를 세우는 일이라는 사실을 다시 한번 확인하는 자리였다.

그 자리에서 나는 라오스 루앙프라방의 ‘레드 라이더(Red Rider)’ 팀 이야기를 꺼내놓았다. 젊은 손사랑 감독이 홀로 팀을 맡아 고군분투하고 있지만, 경험과 역량의 한계 앞에 결국 도움을 요청해 온 것이다. 사실 나는 몇 달 동안 여러 지도자들에게 부탁을 해 보았으나 좀처럼 뜻을 이룰 수 없었고, 이제는 혼자의 힘으로는 더 이상 감당할 수 없는 상황임을 절실히 느끼고 있었다. 그래서 이번에는 오랜 세월 나와 동고동락하며 내 삶과 사역을 가장 잘 이해해온 김한근 선배께, 누구보다도 무겁고 간절한 청을 드릴 수밖에 없었다.

라오스는 이제 막 두 번째 팀이 생겨난 신생 야구의 땅이다. 손사랑 감독을 지도해 줄 경험 많은 멘토가 필요했고, 나는 그 역할에 가장 적합한 분이 김한근 선배라고 확신했다. 풍부한 야구 지식과 아마추어, 프로 무대에서의 긴 지도자 생활은 손사랑 감독을 단기간에 성장시킬 수 있는 토대가 되리라 믿었다. 만약 손사랑 감독이 김한근 선배에게서 제대로 훈련을 받고 지도자로서의 기초를 단단히 다질 수 있다면, 라오스 야구는 그를 통해 급속도로 성장하게 될 것이다.

선배는 나의 부탁을 조용히 들으시더니, 잠시 생각에 잠기시고는 담담하게 말씀하셨다. “체력이 다하는 날까지, 의미 있고 보람된 삶을 위해 마지막 불꽃을 피우고 싶다.” 그 한마디는 내 마음을 깊이 울렸고, 그 말 속에서 선배의 지난 삶 전체가 떠올랐다. 새로운 훈련법이 나오면 직접 발로 뛰며 배우고, 건강 관리에도 한 치의 소홀함이 없었던 모습, 현장을 떠난 뒤에도 멘탈 코칭 과정에 1기로 참여하여 1년 동안 하루도 빠지지 않고 수강하셨던 그 열정…. 나 역시 선배의 뒷모습에 자극을 받아 2기로 참여해 과정을 마쳤다. 그렇게 늘 앞장서 배우고 준비하며, 또 다른 이들을 위해 자신의 몸과 마음을 내어놓는 모습은 지금까지도 한결같다.

돌아보면 김한근 선배와 함께 걸어온 세월이 반세기가 넘는다. 그 긴 시간 동안 선배의 성실과 열정은 언제나 후배들의 길잡이가 되어주었다. 그리고 이제, 라오스라는 새로운 땅에서 다시 한번 젊은 지도자와 선수들을 세워가는 일을 맡아 주시게 되었다. 이 쉽지 않은 결정을 내려주신 선배께 나는 후배로서 존경과 찬사를 보내지 않을 수 없다. 모든 사람이 다 이만수가 아니라는것, 또 모든 사람이 다 이 길을 선택할 수 있는 것은 아니기에, 그래서 이런 분들이 곁에 있다는 것이 더욱 귀하고 고마운 일이다.

나는 김한근 선배의 성실과 열정이 손사랑 감독 한 사람을 넘어 라오스의 수많은 젊은 선수들에게 꿈과 희망을 심어줄 것이라 확신한다. 그곳에서 야구는 누군가의 삶을 비추는 빛이 되고, 희망의 길잡이가 될 것이다. 그리고 그 길 위에서, 나 역시 후배로서, 동역자로서, 끝까지 함께 발걸음을 맞추어 가고 싶다.


 < The Weight of Laos Ministry and Senior Kim Han-geun's Decision >

Yesterday (the 29th), I visited Senior Kim Han-geun and had a deep conversation about the future of baseball ministry in Southeast Asia. It reaffirmed that establishing professional coaches is paramount in promoting baseball.

During our meeting, I brought up the story of the ‘Red Rider’ team in Luang Prabang, Laos. Young coach Son Sarang has been struggling alone to manage the team, but ultimately reached out for help due to the limitations of his experience and capabilities. Truthfully, I had approached several coaches over the past few months, but my efforts had yielded little success. I now acutely felt that the situation was beyond what I could handle alone. Therefore, this time, I had no choice but to make a particularly earnest and weighty request to Senior Kim Han-geun, who had shared in my joys and sorrows for many years and understood my life and ministry better than anyone.

Laos is a fledgling baseball nation, having only recently established its second team. Coach Son Sa-rang needed an experienced mentor to guide him, and I was convinced Senior Kim Han-geun was the most suitable person for this role. His extensive baseball knowledge and long coaching career across both amateur and professional levels would provide the foundation to rapidly develop Coach Son Sa-rang. If Coach Son Sa-rang could receive proper training from Senior Kim Han-geun and solidify his foundation as a coach, Laotian baseball would rapidly grow through him.

Senior Kim listened quietly to my request, then fell into thought for a moment before speaking calmly. “Until the day my strength runs out, I want to ignite my final spark for a meaningful and rewarding life.” Those words resonated deeply within me, and his entire life flashed before my eyes. His relentless pursuit of new training methods, learning firsthand through hands-on effort; his unwavering dedication to health management; his passion even after leaving the field, participating in the first cohort of mental coaching courses and attending every single session for a full year without missing a day... Inspired by his example, I too joined the second cohort and completed the program. That spirit of always leading by example in learning and preparation, and selflessly dedicating his body and mind for others, remains unchanged to this day.

Looking back, over half a century has passed since I first walked alongside Senior Kim Han-geun. Throughout that long journey, his sincerity and passion have consistently guided us juniors. And now, he has taken on the task of nurturing young leaders and players once again, this time in the new land of Laos. As a junior, I cannot help but express my deepest respect and admiration for him making this difficult decision. Not everyone is Lee Man-soo, and not everyone can choose this path. That is precisely why having such individuals by our side is all the more precious and grateful.

I am confident that Kim Han-geun's dedication and passion will inspire dreams and hope not only for Coach Son Sarang but for countless young players in Laos. There, baseball will become a light illuminating someone's life and a guiding beacon of hope. And on that path, I too, as a junior and a fellow worker, wish to keep pace with him every step of the way.
