< 야구로 꿈꾸고, 사람으로 잇는다 >

15일, 나는 베트남으로 향했다. 하루 전인 14일 대구에서 강연을 마치고 막차를 타고 인천으로 올라왔고, 다음 날 아침 8시 비행기를 타야 했기에 거의 잠을 자지 못한 채 곧바로 공항으로 향했다. 이번 베트남 일정은 단순한 출장이나 방문이 아니라 앞으로 전개될 여러 프로젝트의 기반을 다지기 위한 중요한 여정이었기에 헐크파운데이션의 조경원 단장과 최홍준 부장과 함께 뜻을 모아 함께 움직였다.

하노이에 도착한 15일 저녁, 최영삼 대사님 내외와의 만찬이 대사관저에서 예정되어 있다. 16일에는 현지 기자분들과의 인터뷰와 오찬이 이어지고, 17일에는 하노이 금융단에서 강연 및 오찬 일정이 잡혀 있다. 짧지만 의미 있는 일정 속에서, 베트남과 한국을 야구로 잇는 새로운 장이 열릴 것이라는 기대감이 가득했다.

이번 베트남 방문은 이미 오래전, 한국문화원 최승진 원장과 헐크파운데이션 조경원 단장의 만남을 통해 기획된 프로젝트였다. 베트남에서 야구가 점차 활성화될 수 있었던 것도 최승진 원장님과 최영삼 대사님의 꾸준한 관심과 헌신 덕분이다. 그분들의 노력이 밑거름이 되어 매년 ‘한국 대사배 및 내셔널 대회’가 성대하게 개최되고 있다.

올해로 벌써 4회를 맞은 이 대회는 베트남 야구가 얼마나 빠른 속도로 성장하고 있는지를 보여주는 상징적인 행사다. 이렇게 규모 있고 체계적인 대회가 매년 열릴 수 있었던 것은 한국문화원과 대사관의 진심 어린 지원, 그리고 현지 관계자들의 열정이 함께한 결과였다.

짧은 시간 안에 한국 야구가 베트남 사회에 깊이 스며들며, 이제 현지 기업들 또한 그 가능성에 주목하기 시작했다. 무엇보다 베트남의 젊은 청소년들에게 야구는 축구 못지않은 세계적인 스포츠로 자리 잡고 있으며, 그들의 눈빛 속에서 새로운 세대의 열정과 꿈을 느낄 수 있다.

이 사실을 누구보다 잘 알고 있는 사람들은 바로 현장의 청소년들이다. 조경원 단장과 최홍준 부장은 최승진 원장과 함께, 야구를 통해 베트남과 한국이 더 가깝고 진정한 형제처럼 서로를 이해하고 교류할 수 있는 방법을 늘 고민해왔다. 정치나 외교보다도 더 빠르게 마음을 이어주는 것은 결국 ‘사람’이며, 그 마음을 잇는 가장 강력한 매개체가 바로 스포츠라는 믿음이 있다. 그 믿음 아래 헐크파운데이션과 한국문화원이 뜻을 모아 이번 행사를 주관하게 되었다.

지금 당장 우리가 꿈꾸는 모든 일들이 이루어지지 않더라도, 머지않아 반드시 야구를 통해 양국의 관계가 더욱 돈독해지고, 그 안에서 수많은 젊은이들의 꿈이 자라날 것이라 확신한다. 지난 55년 동안 나는 야구를 통해 세상과 호흡하며 꿈을 꾸었고, 그 길 위에서 수많은 도전과 배움을 통해 지금의 나를 만들어왔다.

나는 여전히 그라운드 위의 선수처럼 뛰고 있다. 꿈은 아직 끝나지 않았고, 야구는 여전히 나의 언어이며, 나의 삶이다. 오늘도 나는 아시아의 하늘 아래에서, 야구를 통해 사람과 사람을 잇고, 그 꿈을 향해 쉼 없이 달려간다.


  < Dreaming Through Baseball, Connecting Through People >

On the 15th, I headed to Vietnam. The day before, on the 14th, I finished a lecture in Daegu and caught the last train to Incheon. Since I had to catch an 8 a.m. flight the next morning, I barely slept and headed straight to the airport. This Vietnam trip was not a simple business trip or visit, but an important journey to lay the groundwork for several upcoming projects. Therefore, I joined forces with Director Jo Kyung-won and Deputy Director Choi Hong-jun of the Hulk Foundation to move forward together.

Upon arriving in Hanoi on the evening of the 15th, a dinner with Ambassador Choi Young-sam and his wife was scheduled at the ambassador's residence. On the 16th, interviews and a luncheon with local journalists followed, and on the 17th, a lecture and luncheon were scheduled at the Hanoi Financial District. Amid this short yet meaningful itinerary, anticipation ran high that a new chapter connecting Vietnam and Korea through baseball would be opened.

This Vietnam visit was a project planned long ago through a meeting between Director Choi Seung-jin of the Korean Cultural Center and Director Jo Kyoung-won of the Hulk Foundation. The gradual growth of baseball in Vietnam is also thanks to the consistent interest and dedication of Director Choi Seung-jin and Ambassador Choi Young-sam. Their efforts laid the groundwork for the annual ‘Korean Ambassador's Cup and National Tournament’ to be held grandly each year.

Now in its fourth year, this tournament is a symbolic event showcasing how rapidly Vietnamese baseball is growing. The fact that such a large-scale and well-organized tournament can be held annually is the result of the sincere support from the Korean Cultural Center and the Embassy, combined with the passion of local stakeholders.

In a short time, Korean baseball has deeply permeated Vietnamese society, and now local companies are also beginning to take notice of its potential. Above all, baseball has established itself among Vietnam's young youth as a global sport no less popular than soccer, and one can sense the passion and dreams of a new generation in their eyes.

Those who understand this reality best are the young people on the field themselves. Team Manager Cho Kyung-won and Deputy Manager Choi Hong-jun, alongside Director Choi Seung-jin, have consistently sought ways for Vietnam and Korea to grow closer and understand each other like true brothers through baseball. They believe that ultimately, it is ‘people’ who connect hearts faster than politics or diplomacy, and that the most powerful medium for connecting those hearts is sports. Guided by this conviction, the Hulk Foundation and the Korean Cultural Center have joined forces to host this event.

Even if not all our dreams come true immediately, I am certain that through baseball, the relationship between our two nations will soon grow stronger, and within that bond, the dreams of countless young people will flourish. For the past 55 years, I have breathed with the world and dreamed through baseball. Along that path, countless challenges and lessons have shaped me into who I am today.

I am still running like a player on the field. The dream is not over yet. Baseball remains my language and my life. Today, under the skies of Asia, I continue to connect people through baseball and run tirelessly toward that dream.
