어제(15일) 베트남 하노이에 도착하자마자 오후 6시, 최영삼 대사님과의 만찬 자리가 마련되었다. 짧은 시간이었지만, 대사님과 나눈 대화 속에는 베트남 내에서 야구가 점차 자리 잡아가는 흐름과, 앞으로의 교류 방향에 대한 깊은 공감이 담겨 있었다. 현장을 세심하게 살피고, 문화·스포츠 외교에 늘 진심을 다하는 모습에서 따뜻한 리더십을 느낄 수 있었다.

올해로 벌써 ‘제4회 대사배 내셔널컵 야구대회’가 열렸다. 베트남의 젊은 청소년들에게 야구가 빠른 속도로 퍼지고 있다는 사실을, 현장에서 직접 확인할 수 있었다. 거리에서는 야구 유니폼을 입은 청소년들을 어렵지 않게 볼 수 있고, 야구 모자를 쓴 젊은이들이 하나의 트렌드처럼 늘어나는 모습이 인상적이었다. 야구가 단순한 경기 그 이상의 문화로 자리 잡아가고 있다는 뜻이다.

짧은 시간 안에 한국 야구는 베트남 사회 속으로 자연스럽게 스며들었고, 현지 기업들도 점차 그 가능성에 관심을 보이고 있다. 무엇보다 베트남 청소년들에게 야구는 축구 못지않은 세계적인 스포츠로 인식되고 있으며, 그들의 눈빛 속에는 새로운 세대의 열정과 꿈이 살아 숨 쉰다.

이 변화를 가장 가까이에서 느끼는 사람들은 바로 현장의 청소년들이다. 그들과 함께 땀 흘리고 웃으며 배우는 시간 속에서, 야구를 통해 한국과 베트남이 서로 더 깊이 이해하고 가까워질 수 있음을 실감한다. 정치나 외교보다 더 빠르게 마음을 이어주는 것은 결국 ‘사람’이며, 그 마음을 잇는 가장 강력한 매개체가 스포츠라는 믿음은 변함이 없다.

지금 당장 우리가 꿈꾸는 모든 일들이 다 이루어지지 않더라도, 머지않아 야구를 통해 양국의 관계가 더욱 단단해지고, 그 안에서 수많은 젊은이들의 꿈이 자라날 것이라 믿는다. 지난 55년 동안 나는 야구를 통해 세상과 호흡하며 꿈을 꾸었고, 그 길 위에서 수많은 도전과 배움을 통해 지금의 나를 만들어왔다.

나는 여전히 그라운드 위의 선수처럼 뛰고 있다. 꿈은 아직 끝나지 않았고, 야구는 여전히 나의 언어이며, 나의 삶이다. 오늘도 나는 아시아의 하늘 아래에서, 야구를 통해 사람과 사람을 잇고, 그 꿈을 향해 쉼 없이 달려간다.


 < Baseball remains my language and my life. >

Upon arriving in Hanoi, Vietnam yesterday (the 15th), a dinner meeting with Ambassador Choi Young-sam was arranged at 6 PM. Though brief, our conversation reflected a deep shared understanding of baseball's growing presence within Vietnam and the direction of future exchanges. His meticulous attention to the field and sincere dedication to cultural and sports diplomacy conveyed a warm leadership.

This year marks the 4th Ambassador's Cup National Baseball Tournament. On the ground, we could directly observe how rapidly baseball is spreading among Vietnam's youth. It was striking to see teenagers in baseball uniforms easily spotted on the streets and young people wearing baseball caps increasingly becoming a trend. This signifies baseball is establishing itself as more than just a game—it's becoming a culture.

Within a short time, Korean baseball has naturally permeated Vietnamese society, and local businesses are gradually showing interest in its potential. Above all, Vietnamese youth perceive baseball as a global sport on par with soccer, and their eyes sparkle with the passion and dreams of a new generation.

The ones feeling this change most intimately are the young people on the field. Through the time spent sweating, laughing, and learning together, I truly feel that baseball can deepen mutual understanding and bring Korea and Vietnam closer. What ultimately connects hearts faster than politics or diplomacy is ‘people,’ and the belief that sports is the most powerful medium for connecting those hearts remains unchanged.

Even if not all the things we dream of come true right now, I believe that through baseball, the relationship between our two countries will soon grow stronger, and within that, the dreams of countless young people will flourish. For the past 55 years, I have breathed with the world and dreamed through baseball. Along that path, countless challenges and lessons have shaped me into who I am today.

I still run like a player on the field. The dream is not over yet. Baseball remains my language and my life. Today, under the skies of Asia, I continue to connect people through baseball and run tirelessly toward that dream.
