< 변화는 선택이다 >

조유현 장로님이 오늘(23일), 전라도 장성으로 내려가셨다. 건강이 악화되어 병원에서도 더는 치료 방법이 없다는 진단을 받으셨고, 피톤치드가 풍부한 자연환경 속에서 회복을 도모하기 위해 장성에서 6개월간 요양하시기로 한 것이다.

오늘은 목요일, 매주 열리던 ‘사랑방모임’의 날이기도 하다. 장로님은 몸이 불편하심에도 며칠 전부터 공과 자료와 학습 내용을 미리 준비해 순원들에게 보내주셨다. 지난 주일 교회에서 뵈었을 때는 예전보다 훨씬 쇠약해 보이셨지만, 여전히 환한 미소로 성도들을 맞이하셨다. 늘 그렇듯, 장로님은 자신보다 남을 먼저 생각하셨다.

장로님 곁에는 언제나 권사님이 계신다. 주일이면 누구보다 먼저 교회에 나오셔서 강단을 정돈하고, 예배 순서를 살피고, 사랑방모임이 있는 날에는 다과와 음식을 준비해 순원들을 맞이하신다. 그 환한 미소와 섬김의 손길은 교인 모두가 아는 ‘한나’와 같은 믿음의 본이다.

장로님은 장성으로 내려가시기 전, 순원들에게 이렇게 메시지를 보내주셨다.

“샬롬. 항암 부작용이 심해 의료진의 권고로 표적 항암을 중단하고, 앞으로는 3주에 한 번 면역 항암만 받게 되었습니다. 피톤치드의 자연치유가 도움이 된다고 하여 전남 장성으로 내려왔습니다. 하나님께서 예비하신 거처를 6개월 단위로 계약하게 되었는데, 이것도 큰 은혜라 생각합니다. 부득이하게 오늘 사랑방 예배는 영상으로 드리게 되었습니다. 불편을 드려 송구하지만 함께 은혜의 시간 되길 바랍니다.”

통화 중에도 장로님은 밝은 목소리로 말씀하셨다.
“오늘만큼은 부득이하게 영상으로 예배를 드려야 할 것 같습니다.”
그 말씀에 나는 “장로님, 매주 영상으로 드려도 괜찮습니다. 건강이 먼저입니다.”라고 말씀드렸다. 그런데도 장로님은 끝까지 웃음으로 답하셨다. 아픔을 내색하지 않고, 오히려 우리를 위로하시는 그 모습에서 진짜 믿음의 힘이 느껴졌다.

최근 장로님은 담임목사님께 장로직을 잠시 내려놓겠다고 말씀드렸다고 한다. 1년간 안식년을 갖고 건강 회복에 집중하기 위해서였다. 그 결정 속에서도 교회를 향한 사랑과 순전한 마음은 변함이 없었다.

나는 장로님을 보며 나의 마지막 순간에도 이렇게 담대하고 온유할 수 있을까 생각하곤 한다. 언제나 웃음으로 고통을 이기고, 믿음으로 하루를 살아가는 장로님의 모습은 나에게 ‘참된 변화는 환경이 아니라 마음의 선택’이라는 사실을 가르쳐 준다. 나도 언젠가 인생의 마지막을 맞이할 때, 장로님처럼 웃으며, 감사하며, 믿음의 본으로 살아가고 싶다. 단 한 사람에게라도 삶의 멘토가 될 수 있다면, 그것이 내가 이 땅에서 진정으로 성공한 인생이라 믿는다.

지금은 모든것들을 다 내려놓고 건강회복을 위해 최선을 다 하시겠단다. 미련한 나는 장로님께 연약한 저희들이 이 세상을 살아갈 때 지치고 힘들 때 본이 되시는 분을 보며 따라 살아 갈 수 있는 분이 장로님입니다. 저희들이 지치고 삶이 고단하고 넘어질 때 우리들에게 믿음의 멘토인 장로님이 계셔 얼마나 큰 힘이 되시는지 모른다고 이야기 했다.

“내가 이미 얻었다 함도 아니요 온전히 이루었다 함도 아니라 오직 내가 그리스도 예수께 잡힌 바 된 그것을 잡으려고 달려가노라.
형제들아 나는 아직 내가 잡은 줄로 여기지 아니하고 오직 한 일 즉 뒤에 있는것은 잊어버리고 앞에 있는 것을 잡으려고.
푯대를 향하여 그리스도 예수 안에서 하나님이 위에서 부르신 부름의 상을 위하여 달려가노라.
그러므로 누구든지 우리 온전히 이룬 자들은 이렇게 생각할지니 만일 어떤 일에 너희가 달리 생각하면 하나님이 이것도 너희에게 나타내리시라.
오직 우리가 어디까지 이르렀든지 그대로 행할 것이라.”

Elder Cho Yoo-hyun went down to Jangseong, Jeolla-do today (23rd). He was diagnosed that there was no more treatment at the hospital due to his poor health, and he decided to recuperate for six months in Jangseong to promote recovery in a natural environment rich in phytoncide.

Today is also the day of the Sarangbang Meeting, which was held every Thursday and every week. Even though the elder was uncomfortable, he prepared technical materials and learning contents in advance and sent them to the martyrs a few days ago. When I met him at the church on Sunday last week, he looked much weaker than before, but he still greeted the saints with a bright smile. As always, the elder thought of others before himself.

There is always a monk by the elder's side. On Sunday, he comes to church before anyone else, organizes the pulpit, examines the order of worship, and prepares refreshments and food to greet the martyrs on the day of the Sarangbang meeting. That bright smile and service touch are a pattern of faith like Hannah, which all church members know.

Before going down to Jangseong, the elder sent a message to the martyrs like this.

"Shalom. Due to the severe side effects of chemotherapy, we stopped targeted chemotherapy with the recommendation of the medical staff, and we will only receive immuno-cancer once every three weeks from now on. I came down to Jangseong, Jeollanam-do, because I heard that phytoncide's natural healing is helpful. I have signed a six-month contract for the residence that God has prepared, and I think this is a great favor. Unfortunately, today's Sarangbang service is held by video. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we hope it will be a time of grace together."

Even during the call, the elder spoke in a bright voice."I think I have to do a video service today."When I said that, I said, "It's okay to give you a video every week, elders. Health comes first." Nevertheless, the elder answered with laughter to the end. I felt the power of real faith in the way he comforted us without expressing pain.

Recently, the elder reportedly told the pastor that he would put down Jang Logic for a while. It was to take a year off and focus on recovering health. Despite the decision, love and pure heart for the church remained unchanged.

When I look at the elder, I often wonder if I can be this bold and gentle even in my last moments. The appearance of an elder who always beats pain with laughter and lives a day with faith teaches me that 'true change is not the environment, but the choice of the mind'. When I come to the end of my life someday, I want to smile, be grateful, and live as a model of faith like an elder. If I can be a mentor in life for even one person, I believe that it is a truly successful life on this earth.

For now, I will put everything down and do my best to recover my health. I'm a stupid elder who can live with the weak when we are tired and struggling in this world, and the elder is the one who can live with us as a model. He said that when we are tired and our lives are tired and we fall down, we don't know how much strength he is because we have an elder who is a mentor of faith.

"Not that I have already obtained it, not that I have fully achieved it, but only that I run to catch it that has been captured by Christ Jesus.
Brothers, I don't take it as the line I've caught yet, only what I've done: forget what's behind me and catch what's in front of me.
Run toward the signpost for the reward of the call that God called from above in Christ Jesus.
Therefore anyone who has fully achieved us will think this: if you think otherwise about something, God will show you this, too.
Only we will do as we go, no matter how far we get."
