< '골든벨'을 누르다 >

오늘(25일) 이른 새벽, 평소처럼 사우나로 내려갔다. 전날 밤 플레이오프 5차전에서 한화이글스가 삼성라이온즈를 꺾고, 무려 19년 만에 한국시리즈 진출을 확정한 바로 다음 날이었다. 문을 열자마자 안은 이미 웃음과 이야기로 가득했다. 사우나 멤버는 열 명. 다섯은 삼성, 다섯은 한화팬이다. 이번 시리즈 내내 서로를 놀리고 위로하고 응원하며 함께 떨었다. 나는 이번만큼은 야구인의 시선이 아닌, 한 사람의 팬으로 삼성라이온즈를 응원했다. 이기면 마음이 환하고, 지면 말수가 줄어드는 이 감정이 새로웠다.

그중에서도 가장 들뜬 이는 하 회장과 유 회장이었다. 두 사람 모두 충청도 출신의 오래된 한화팬이다. 사우나 안은 마치 어제의 경기가 아직 끝나지 않은 연장전 같았다. “19년 만에 올라갔어! 19년 만에!” 두 사람의 웃음이 사우나 벽까지 울렸다.

그 분위기에 이끌려 모두 사우나를 간단히 마치고 해장국 집으로 갔다. 도착하자마자 두 회장은 식당 모든 손님들을 향해 외쳤다. “오늘 아침은 한화팬이 쏩니다!” 그리고는 나를 가리키며, “한화가 이만수 감독님을 이겼습니다!” 라고 소리쳤다.

순간 식당이 한바탕 웃음으로 흔들렸다. 나 역시 웃을 수밖에 없었다. 사람들은 아직도 나를 ‘삼성라이온즈의 이만수’로 기억한다. 그래서 삼성의 패배가 아니라 ‘이만수의 패배’라고 말하며 웃는다. 예전 같았으면 마음 한 구석이 조금 쓸쓸했을지도 모른다. 하지만 지금은 다르다. 이렇게 웃으며 함께 야구를 이야기할 수 있다는 사실이 그저 고맙다.

두 회장은 마치 ‘골든벨’을 누르듯 계산을 통 크게 해결했다. 현역 시절과 감독 시절에는 경기장이라는 성 안에서만 살다 보니 이런 팬들의 온기를 잘 몰랐다. 하지만 이제는 조금 알 것 같다. 희망을 믿고, 패배에 마음 졸이고, 서로를 위로하는 그 마음. 그 마음이 야구를 움직이는 힘이다.

“한화가 한국시리즈에서 이기면, 아파트 전체에 한턱 씁니다!” 또다시 선언이 이어진다. 아침 해장국에 점심 한정식, 저녁에는 고기까지. 약속대로라면 동네 전체가 잔치집이 될 것이다.

유 회장은 이번 시리즈 내내 문현빈 선수를 이야기했다. 잘생긴 얼굴, 탄탄한 체형, 힘 좋은 허벅지. 정말 닮았다. 아니, 문현빈 선수가 유 회장을 닮았다고 해야 할까.

사람들은 한화를 ‘보살 팀’이라 부른다. 오랜 기간 성적 부진에도 묵묵히 사랑해온 팬들 때문이라고 한다. 그 마음은 어리석음이 아니라, 포기하지 않는 정(情)에 가깝다.

야구는 결국 사람의 이야기다.
승패를 두고 함께 웃고 울 수 있는 사람.
오늘 아침, 한화팬들이 ‘골든벨’을 누른 이유는 바로 그것이었다.
기쁨을 함께 나누고 싶다는 마음 하나.
그 마음이면 충분했다.

Early this morning (the 25th), I went down to the sauna as usual. It was the very next day after the Hanwha Eagles defeated the Samsung Lions in Game 5 of the playoffs, securing their spot in the Korean Series for the first time in 19 years. The moment I opened the door, the room was already filled with laughter and chatter. There were ten sauna members: five Samsung fans and five Hanwha fans. Throughout this series, we teased each other, offered comfort, cheered together, and trembled together. This time, I cheered for the Samsung Lions not as a baseball insider, but as a single fan. This feeling—where victory brought lightness to my heart and defeat made me quiet—was new.

Among them, the most excited were Chairman Ha and Chairman Yoo. Both are longtime Hanwha fans from Chungcheong Province. Inside the sauna, it felt like yesterday's game was still in extra innings. “We made it after 19 years! After 19 years!” Their laughter echoed off the sauna walls.

Drawn by the atmosphere, everyone quickly finished their sauna session and headed to a hangover soup restaurant. The moment we arrived, the two chairmen shouted to every customer in the restaurant. “Hanwha fans are buying this morning's round!” Then, pointing at me, they shouted, “Hanwha beat Manager Lee Man-soo!”

The restaurant erupted in laughter. I couldn't help but laugh too. People still remember me as ‘Lee Man-soo of the Samsung Lions’. So they laugh, saying it's not Samsung's loss, but ‘Lee Man-soo's loss’. In the past, a corner of my heart might have felt a little lonely. But now it's different. I'm just grateful that we can laugh together and talk about baseball like this.

The two chairmen settled the bill generously, as if pressing a ‘Golden Bell’ button. During my playing days and my time as manager, I lived only within the castle walls of the stadium, so I didn't fully grasp the warmth of fans like this. But now I think I understand a little. That heart that believes in hope, worries over defeat, and comforts each other. That heart is the force that drives baseball.

“If Hanwha wins the Korean Series, I'll treat the whole apartment complex!” Another declaration follows. Morning hangover soup, lunch set meal, and even meat for dinner. If he keeps his word, the whole neighborhood will be one big feast.

Chairman Yoo talked about player Moon Hyun-bin throughout this series. Handsome face, solid build, powerful thighs. He really does resemble him. Or rather, should we say Mun Hyun-bin resembles Chairman Yoo?

People call Hanwha the ‘Buddha's team’. It's said to be because of the fans who have silently loved them through years of poor performance. That sentiment isn't foolishness; it's closer to an unwavering affection.

Baseball is ultimately a story about people.
People who can laugh and cry together over wins and losses.
This morning, Hanwha fans pressed the ‘Golden Bell’ for precisely that reason.
The single desire to share the joy together.
That feeling alone was enough.
