< 야구로 전하는 사랑, 그리고 천사의 마음 >

이번 한 주는 숨 돌릴 틈이 없었다. 경기도 동두천과 대구에서 일정이 이어졌고, 하루 잠시 집에서 쉬었다가 다시 대구로 내려가 강연을 했다. 그리고 오래 전부터 마음속에 품고 있던 분, V-EXX 김동조 대표를 직접 찾아뵈었다.

김 대표는 오래전부터 야구인들과 어려운 이웃들에게 따뜻한 손길을 내미는 멋진 분이다. 몇 차례 전화로만 안부를 나누었지만, 이번에는 꼭 직접 인사드리고 싶었다. 대구 라팍 구장 매장에서 마주 앉은 자리에서 우리는 동남아 야구 사역의 현실과 미래, 그리고 그 안에 담긴 수많은 꿈들에 대하여 오랜 시간 이야기를 나누었다.

나는 대표님께 다가오는 12월, 태국에서 열릴 SEA 게임에서 베트남이 사상 처음으로 야구 국가대표로 출전한다며, 선수들이 입고 나설 유니폼을 후원해 주실 수 있겠냐고 조심스럽고 또 간곡하게 부탁드렸다. 잠시의 망설임도 없이 대표님은 미소를 지으며 말씀하셨다.

“감독님 하시는 일에 저도 작게나마 동참하고 싶습니다.”
그 한마디에 지난 세월의 피로가 한순간에 녹아내렸다. 대표님은 홈·어웨이 유니폼을 각각 25벌, 총 50벌을 흔쾌히 후원하시겠다고 약속하셨다.

11년 전, 처음 동남아로 향했을 때만 해도 이렇게까지 될 줄은 몰랐다. 낯선 땅과 언어, 그리고 문화 속에서 야구라는 씨앗을 심겠다는 일념 하나로 뛰어들었다. 아무도 관심 갖지 않았고, 의아한 눈길로 바라보던 사람도 있었지만, 그 씨앗은 어느새 싹을 틔워 줄기를 뻗고, 라오스와 베트남, 캄보디아, 인도네시아 아이들의 마음속에 ‘꿈’이라는 열매를 맺기 시작했다. 이제는 여자 선수들까지 야구를 배우겠다며 찾아온다. 그 모습을 볼 때마다 지난 눈물의 세월이 헛되지 않았음을 느낀다.

중국 웨이하이 한국외국인학교의 초대 감독을 맡은 최정중 감독은 한국에서 안정된 자리를 내려놓고 가족과 함께 중국으로 간 후배다. 그는 대한민국 야구의 정신을 그곳 청소년들에게 전하고자 먼 길을 택했다. 그런 그의 이야기를 전해 들은 김동조 대표는 잠시 생각에 잠기더니, 베트남뿐 아니라 라오스와 중국에도 힘이 되고 싶다고 하셨다. 곧 루앙프라방으로 들어가시는 김한근 선배를 위해 유니폼 30벌을, 그리고 새로 창단하는 웨이하이 야구부를 위해 또 30벌을 후원하겠다고 약속하셨다. 대표님의 그 마음에 나 또한 가슴이 뜨거워졌다. 베트남에 이어 라오스와 중국까지 유니폼 후원이라는 적지 않은 경비임에도 불구하고, 동남아 야구의 꿈을 함께 품어주신 그 마음이 너무나 감사했다. 한 야구인으로서, 그리고 선교의 길을 걸어온 동역자로서 진심으로 고개 숙여 감사드렸다.

인천으로 돌아오는 길, 가장 먼저 베트남의 박효철 감독에게 전화를 걸어 소식을 전했더니 박 감독의 떨린 목소리가 들렸다. “감독님, 정말 큰일 날 뻔했어요. 너무 감사합니다.” 박 감독이 왜 이렇게 기뻐하고 좋아하는지 잘 알기에, 그 말이 오히려 마음을 저리게 했다.

이어 라오스 루앙프라방의 손사랑 대표에게 소식을 전하자, 손 대표도 기쁨을 감추지 못하며 불과 몇 분 만에 로고와 마크, 색상이 준비된 시안을 보내왔다. 얼마나 선수들에게 유니폼을 해주고 싶었으면, 그 시안을 늘 품고 있었을까. 그 마음을 생각하니 나도 모르게 미소가 번졌다. 루앙프라방 야구단이 창단된 지 2년이 되어서야 첫 유니폼을 입게 된다니, 그들의 기쁨이 곧 나의 기쁨이 되었다.

인간이 추구해야 할 진짜 부요함은 물질의 풍요가 아니라, 나눔과 섬김에서 오는 정신적 풍요라는 것을 이번 김동조 대표님을 통해 마음 깊이 깨닫는다. 야구 하나로 이렇게 많은 사람들이 함께 움직이고, 서로의 삶이 바뀌어 간다. 결국 세상을 바꾸는 것은 ‘사람’이며, 그 사람의 ‘진심’이다.

지난 11년 동안 외롭고 험한 길을 걸어왔지만, 그 길 위에서 오늘 나는 ‘천사의 마음’을 만났다. 그리고 야구는 단순한 스포츠가 아니라, 세상을 따뜻하게 바꾸는 사랑의 도구임을 다시금 확신한다.

I didn't have time to breathe this week. My schedule continued in Dongducheon and Daegu, Gyeonggi Province, and I rested at home for a while for a day and then went back to Daegu to give a lecture. And I visited Kim Dong-jo, CEO of V-EXX, who I had in my heart for a long time.

CEO Kim is a wonderful person who has been giving warm hands to baseball players and their neighbors in need for a long time. We only spoke on the phone several times to say hello, but this time we really wanted to say hello in person. Sitting opposite each other at the La Pac Stadium store in Daegu, we talked for a long time about the reality and future of the Southeast Asian baseball ministry and the numerous dreams contained in it.

I asked the CEO carefully and earnestly that Vietnam will play for the first time in baseball at the upcoming SEA Games in Thailand in December, and that he could support the uniforms that the players will wear. Without hesitation, the CEO smiled and said.

"I'd like to participate in what the director is doing, even in a small way."The fatigue of the past years melted down in an instant at that word. The CEO promised to gladly support 25 home and away uniforms and 50 in total.

Eleven years ago, when I first headed to Southeast Asia, I didn't know it would be this far. In an unfamiliar land, language, and culture, I jumped in with one determination to plant the seeds of baseball. No one was interested, and some people looked at it with a mysterious gaze, but the seeds sprouted, stretched out their stems, and began to bear the fruit of "dream" in the hearts of children in Laos, Vietnam, Cambodia and Indonesia. Now even female players come to learn baseball. Whenever I see that, I feel that the past years of tears have not been in vain.

Choi Jeong-joong, the first coach of the Weihai Korean School for Foreigners in China, is a junior who gave up his stable position in Korea and went to China with his family. He chose a long way to convey the spirit of Korean baseball to the youth there. After hearing his story, CEO Kim Dong-jo thought for a moment, and said that he wanted to help Laos and China as well as Vietnam. He promised to sponsor 30 uniforms for Kim Han-geun, who will soon enter Luang Prabang, and another 30 for the new Weihai baseball team. The CEO's heart also heated up my heart. Despite the considerable expenses of sponsoring uniforms from Vietnam to Laos and China, I was very grateful for the dream of Southeast Asian baseball. As a baseball player and a companion who has walked the path of missionary work, I bowed my heart and thanked him.

On the way back to Incheon, I called Park Hyo-cheol from Vietnam and told him the news, and he heard a nervous voice. "Director, I almost got in big trouble. Thank you so much." As I understand why Park is so happy and happy, it rather made me feel sad.

When Son Sa-rang, the CEO of Luang Prabang in Laos, then, he was happy and sent a draft of the logo, mark, and color in just a few minutes. How much I wanted to give the players a uniform, I always had that draft. Thinking of that heart made me smile without realizing it. Their joy soon became my joy to wear their first uniform only two years after the Luang Prabang baseball team was founded.

Through this CEO Kim Dong-jo, we deeply realize that the real wealth that humans should pursue is not the abundance of material, but the spiritual abundance that comes from sharing and serving. With baseball, so many people move together, and each other's lives change. After all, it is the person who changes the world, and the person's sincerity.

For the past 11 years, I've gone down a lonely and rough road, but on that road today I met the "heart of an angel." And I'm convinced again that baseball is not just a sport, it's a tool of love that warms the world.
