31일 라오스에 도착하자마자 저녁시간에 주라오스 정영수 대사와 1등서기관, 2등서기관, 손사랑 코치 내외 그리고 김한근 선배와 함께 만찬식을 가졌다. 정영수 대사는 라오스에 있을 때 여러번 뵙고 이날 앞으로 라오스 야구를 어떻게 전개해 나갈 것인지에 대해 상세하게 이야기 나누는 시간을 가졌다.

정영수 대사님도 지난 10년 동안 K - 야구를 통해 라오스 청소년들뿐만 아니라 여자야구선수들에게도 대한민국의 위대함을 전해줄 수 있어 늘 고맙게 생각하고 있단다. 야구는 언어와 문화를 넘어 서로를 이해하게 해주는 강력한 연결 수단뿐만 아니라 지역 사회와 청소년들에게 야구를 통해 긍정적인 영향을 주고 또 한국과 라오스를 잇는 다리 역할을 할 수 있음을 지난 10년 동안 보아왔다.

라오스에서의 지난 10년은 나에게 있어 한국과 라오스를 잇는 너무나 중요한 역할을 했다고 생각한다. 앞에서도 언급 했지만 야구를 통해 두 나라 사이의 우정을 더 깊게 만들었고 또 서로의 문화를 존중하고 배우는 계기가 되었다.

정영수 대사는 만날 때마다 스포츠와 문화 분야의 협력을 확대해 나가는데 있어 야구가 이들 청소년들에게 얼마나 큰 영향력을 주는지 너무나 잘 알고 있다고 말씀하신다. 그리고 감독님의 민간 차원의 역할이 정말 중요하다는 말씀을 여러번 하셨다. 야구를 통한 외교와 민간 교류가 활발히 이뤄질 수 있도록 함께 노력하자며 손을 잡았다.

이 자리에서 대사님이 라오스에 살고 있는 한국인 사람들이 현재 살고있는 현실과 삶 그리고 젊은층들이 어떻게 생활하고 어떻게 살아가는지 많은 이야기 나누었다. 요즈음 라오스 젊은 청소년들에게 시간이 갈수록 스포츠의 매력에 빠져 있음을 듣게 되었다. 특히 스포츠 중에서도 이들에게 생소한 야구의 매력에 빠져 있다고 한다.

이러듯 짧은 시간 안에 한국 야구는 라오스 청소년들에게 자연스럽게 스며들었고, 몇개 되지 않는 라오스 현지 기업들도 점차 그 가능성에 관심을 보이고 있다. 무엇보다 라오스 청소년들에게 야구는 축구 못지않은 세계적인 스포츠로 인식되고 있다. 또한 그들의 눈빛 속에는 새로운 세대의 열정과 꿈이 살아 숨 쉬고 있음을 보게 된다.

이런 변화를 가장 가까이에서 느끼는 사람들은 바로 현장의 청소년들이다. 그들과 함께 땀 흘리고 웃으며 배우는 시간 속에서, 야구를 통해 한국과 라오스가 서로 더 깊이 이해하고 가까워질 수 있음을 실감한다. 정치나 외교보다 더 빠르게 마음을 이어주는 것은 스포츠 즉 야구다.

야구를 통해 양국의 관계가 더욱 단단해지고, 그 안에서 수많은 젊은이들의 꿈이 자라나기를 기대하고 있다. 지난 55년 동안 나는 야구를 통해 세상과 호흡하며 꿈을 꾸었고, 그 길 위에서 수많은 도전과 배움을 통해 지금의 나를 만들어왔다.

비록 일흔을 바라보는 나이지만 지금도 나는 야구를 통해 여전히 오늘도 그라운드에서 선수들과 함께 뛰고 있다.

Upon arriving in Laos on the 31st, we had a dinner banquet that evening with Ambassador Chung Young-soo of the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Laos, the First Secretary, the Second Secretary, Coach Son Sa-rang and his wife, and senior Kim Han-geun. Ambassador Chung Young-soo, whom I had met several times during his tenure in Laos, took the time to discuss in detail how to develop baseball in Laos going forward.

Ambassador Chung also expressed his enduring gratitude that over the past decade, K-Baseball has allowed him to convey the greatness of Korea not only to Laotian youth but also to female baseball players. Over the past decade, baseball has proven to be not only a powerful bridge that transcends language and culture to foster mutual understanding, but also a force for positive change in local communities and among youth, serving as a vital link between Korea and Laos.

I believe these past ten years in Laos have played an incredibly important role in connecting Korea and Laos. As mentioned earlier, baseball has deepened the friendship between our two nations and provided an opportunity to respect and learn about each other's cultures.

Ambassador Chung Young-soo has stated on multiple occasions that he fully understands how profoundly baseball influences these young people as we expand cooperation in sports and culture. He has also repeatedly emphasized the critical importance of your role at the grassroots level. We shook hands, agreeing to work together to ensure diplomacy and civilian exchanges through baseball flourish.

At this meeting, the Ambassador shared many stories about the realities and lives of Koreans currently residing in Laos, and how the younger generation lives and thrives. I learned that Laotian youth are increasingly captivated by the appeal of sports these days. Particularly, they are drawn to the charm of baseball, a sport unfamiliar to them.

Thus, within a short time, Korean baseball has naturally permeated the lives of Laotian youth. A few local Laotian companies are also gradually showing interest in its potential. Above all, baseball is recognized by Laotian youth as a global sport on par with soccer. Moreover, one can see the passion and dreams of a new generation alive and breathing in their eyes.

Those feeling this change most keenly are the youth on the field. Through the time spent sweating, laughing, and learning together, I truly feel that baseball can deepen mutual understanding and bring Korea and Laos closer. Sports—baseball—connects hearts faster than politics or diplomacy.

I hope baseball will strengthen the bond between our two nations and nurture the dreams of countless young people within it. For the past 55 years, I have breathed with the world and dreamed through baseball. Along that path, countless challenges and lessons have shaped me into who I am today.

Though I am approaching seventy, I still run alongside the players on the field today through baseball.
