< 나이는 숫자에 불과할 뿐이다 >

드디어 김한근 선배와 라오스 북쪽의 중심 도시인 루앙프라방 '수파누옹국립대학' 야구선수들과 첫 만남을 가졌다. 대학생들로 주측이 되어 있어 그런지 젊은 선수들이 우리를 보며 신기해 한다. 물론 나는 젊은 선수들 몇번 보았지만 김한근 선배는 이날이 처음이다.

아름다운 도시에서 김한근 선배와 같이 야구할 수 있어 야구인의 한사람으로서 얼마나 보람을 느끼는지 모른다. 루앙프라방은 손사랑 코치의 야구에 대한 열정과 사랑으로 인해 아무도 도전하지 않았던 관광의 도시에 제 2의 야구팀이 탄생하게 되었다. 루앙프라방은 80% 이상이 산악지형으로 되어 있어 지역적으로 모든 것들이 아직 열악한 편이다. 거기다가 야구장도 없는 척박한 곳이기에 앞으로 선배님이 해 나가야 할 것들이 산적해 있다.

김한근 선배는 늘 이야기 한다. 아무것도 없는 ‘무'에서 부터 기초를 차근차근 배워 나가는 것이 이들을 지도하는데 더 좋을 수 있다고 한다. 조심스럽게 김한근 선배한테 이야기했다. '절대 서둘러서는 안 됩니다.' '지금부터 천천히 멀리 보고 스텝 바이 스텝(step - by - step) 식으로 달려가야 오래 젊은 선수들과 함께 할 수 있습니다'며 이야기 했다.

라오스에서 야구하기에는 아직도 여러가지로 열악한 환경에서 야구를 할 수 밖에 없다. 이제 김한근 선배도 첫발을 내디딘 루앙프라방 야구 팀을 위해 조금이라도 편안하게 야구를 할 수 있도록 뒤에서 도우며 함께 할 생각이다. “꿈꿀 수 있다면, 그 꿈은 반드시 이룰 수 있다” 늘 손사랑 코치에게 '루앙프라방에 지도자를 파견하겠다'며 이야기 했고 그 꿈을 위해 달려왔는데 정말 그 꿈이 현실이 되었다.

이제 첫발을 내디딘 김한근 선배의 포부처럼 이들 젊은선수들이 야구를 통해 희망을 갖고 꿈을 가지게 될 것이고 또 미래에 대한 열정과 비전을 품으며 앞으로 나아갈 것이라 믿는다. 젊은 선수들이 먼 미래의 청사진들을 갖는 것을 보며 야구인으로서 보람을 갖게 된다.

늘 강조하는 이야기지만 루앙프라방에서 야구를 젊은 학생들에게 가르친다는 것은 순탄한 길이 아님을 나는 너무나 잘 알고 있다. 그러나 자신하건데 그렇다고 해서 힘든 일만 있는 것은 아니다. 오히려 포기하고 싶고 힘들어서 도망가고 싶을 때 나의 인생철학처럼 김한근 선배님 또한 “Never ever give up“ 정신으로 끝까지 완주할 것이라 믿는다.

그날을 위해 나 또한 최선을 다해 김한근 선배와 함께 달려갈 것이다

Finally, I met with Kim Han-geun and the baseball players from Suvannabhumi National University in Luang Prabang, the central city of northern Laos. Perhaps because the team is mainly composed of university students, the young players looked at us with curiosity. Of course, I've seen young players before, but this was Kim Han-geun's first time.

As a baseball person, I can't express how rewarding it feels to play baseball with Senior Kim Han-geun in this beautiful city. Thanks to Coach Son Sarang's passion and love for baseball, a second baseball team was born in Luang Prabang—a tourist city where no one had dared to challenge before. Over 80% of Luang Prabang is mountainous terrain, so regionally, everything is still quite underdeveloped. On top of that, it's a barren place without even a baseball field, so there are mountains of things Senior Kim must tackle going forward.

Senior Kim Han-geun always says that starting from nothing, learning the basics step by step, might be the best way to guide these players. I cautiously told Senior Kim, 'You absolutely must not rush.' 'From now on, you must look far ahead and run step by step. Only then can you stay with the young players for the long haul,' he advised.

Playing baseball in Laos still means enduring various hardships in a challenging environment. Now, Senior Kim Han-geun also plans to support and accompany the Luang Prabang baseball team, which has just taken its first steps, so they can play baseball a little more comfortably. “If you can dream it, you can achieve it.” He always told Coach Son Sarang, “I will send a coach to Luang Prabang,” and he ran towards that dream. Now, that dream has truly become reality.

Just as Senior Kim Han-geun expressed his aspirations upon taking that first step, I believe these young players will find hope and dreams through baseball. They will move forward with passion and vision for the future. Seeing these young players envision blueprints for their distant futures gives me great fulfillment as a baseball person.

I know all too well that teaching baseball to young students in Luang Prabang is not a smooth path, as I always emphasize. However, I am confident that it is not only difficult. Rather, when I feel like giving up and want to run away because it's hard, I believe that, like my personal philosophy, Senior Kim Han-geun will also persevere to the end with the spirit of “Never ever give up.”

For that day, I too will run alongside Senior Kim Han-geun, giving my absolute best.
