< 좋은 팀이 되기 위한 첫 걸음>

김한근 선배와 라오스 루앙프라방 'Red Rider'야구단 선수들과의 첫 만남이 이루어졌다. 11월 3일 수파누봉대학이 오늘부터 축제 기간이다. 이날 축제만 아니었다면 선수들이 20명 정도가 훈련하기 위해 운동장에 나왔을텐데 이날 훈련에 참가한 인원이 11명이다.

선배님은 첫날 선수들과 만나 인자한 모습으로 처음부터 끝까지 웃음을 잃지 않고 선수들과 좋은 관계를 유지하며 훈련했다. 첫날이기 때문에 선배님은 훈련에 직접 나서지 않고 손사랑 코치가 선수들을 어떻게 훈련시키고 또 선수들의 기량이 어느 정도인지 지켜 보았다.

손사랑 코치는 평소와 같이 선수들을 지도했다. 옆에서 지켜보던 선배님이 나에게 이런 말을 한다. '내가 생각했던 것보다 선수들의 기량이 그렇게 나쁘지 않다'는 것이다. 거기다가 몇번 보지 않았음에도 첫눈에 훌륭한 선수가 몇명 보인다며 놀라는 모습이다. 선배님이 처음 라오스 루앙프라방에 들어올 때 'Red Rider' 선수들이 야구를 처음 시작하는 선수들인줄 알았다는 것이다.

선수들의 기량이 생각보다 좋은 것은 지난 1년 동안 라오스 여자 감독을 맡은 이준영 감독이 매주 금요일만 되면 자비로 1년 동안 비엔티안에서 기차를 타고 루앙프라방까지 올라와 선수들을 지도했기 때문이다.

이준영 감독이 선수들을 지도하는 것을 손사랑 코치가 유심히 지켜보며 노트에 다 적어 이준영 감독이 없을 때 그대로 가르쳤다고 한다. 이렇게 했던 것이 선수들의 기량이 생각보다 잘하게 되었다. 손사랑 코치는 늘 겸손한 자세로 자기가 가르친 것은 없다고 했지만 김한근 선배는 손사랑 코치가 아니면 이렇게 선수들의 기량이 좋아질 수 없다며 손사랑 코치를 칭찬한다.

이런 모습을 옆에서 지켜보며 역시 큰 어른은 다름을 보게 된다. 선배님도 첫날 선수들의 훈련하는 모습을 지켜보며 빼곡하게 노트에 적으며 앞으로 어떻게 선수들을 이끌어 갈 것인지에 대해 짧은 시간에 노트에 다 적는다.

선수들의 훈련하는 모습을 지켜보며 가장 먼저 체크한 것이 선수들의 도구부터 먼저 체크한다. 노트에 쭉 적더니 가장 필요한 것이 볼이었다. 볼들이 낡았고 또 물에 젖어 볼들이 생각보다 조금씩 무거웠다. 거기다가 실밥들이 터져 송구하는데 제대로 선수들이 볼을 던지지 못한다.

그리고 타격할 때 핼맷 없이 타격하는 것을 보며 선배님이 깜짝 놀란다. 그런데 불행하게도 그날따라 선배님이 첫날 선수들과 훈련하는데 투수가 던지는 볼에 그대로 여자선수가 머리에 맞고 말았다. 옆에서 본 나도 얼마나 놀랬는지 모른다. 다행히 큰 부상은 아니지만 내심 걱정이 된다.

여자선수가 머리에 맞자마자 가장 먼저 선배님이 달려가 한국 말로 '괜찮으냐?' 물었는데 '아쩡 선수가 괜찮다'며 수비하러 나간다. 내가 보아도 아찔한테 어떻게 머리에 볼 맞고 수비하러 나가는지......

'아쩡 선수'는 창단하고부터 계속 여자선수로 활동하고 있는 선수다. 이 광경을 본 김한근 선배가 걱정이 되었던지 아끼는 후배에게 곧바로 전화해 야구볼 한 박스와 헬멧 6개 보내라며 전화했다.

첫날 모든 훈련을 다 끝내고 손사랑 코치가 '오늘은 라면 파티가 있는 날입니다.' 라며 이야기 한다. 지난 2년 동안 손사랑 코치가 선수들을 위해 매주 한번씩은 꼭 라면 파티를 했다고 한다. 그 많은 선수들을 위해 손사랑 코치는 아낌없이 라면을 지인들의 도움과 자비로 선수들을 먹였다.

김한근 선배가 조심스럽게 손사랑 코치에게 '야구클럽하우스는 선수들이 생활하는 공간이다' 그런데 먼지와 식탁이 이렇게 지저분하면 이 먼지가 선수들과 지도자들이 다 먹어야 한다며 다음부터는 이렇게 하면 안 된다는 말씀이 끝나기도 전에 손사랑 코치가 직접 소매를 걷어붙이고 식탁을 닦는다. 이 광경을 보던 선수들이 놀래 본인들이 닦으려고 했지만 끝까지 손사랑 코치가 식탁을 깨끗하게 닦았다.

김한근 선배가 손사랑 코치에게 이렇게 이야기 한다. '바로 그런 자세다' 지도자가 먼저 솔선수범을 보이면 선수들은 따라오게 되어 있다. 이 광경을 지켜본 나는 두말 할 것 없이 마음 편안하게 한국에 들어 가면 되겠다는 생각이 들었다.

'야구는 치고, 던지고, 잡는 것 만이 야구가 아니다' 지금부터 야구 이전에 기본을 먼저 배워가며 야구를 시작해야 한다. 이미 야구는 클럽하우스부터 시작 된다는 것이다. 집안이 더러우면 야구도 잘 할 수 없다. 다음부터는 클럽하우스부터 깨끗하게 정리정돈하는 것부터 시작해야 한다.

선배는 오랜 선수생활과 지도자생활하며 깨달았던 것이다. 야구만 잘 한다고 해서 사회에서 성공하는 것이 아님을... 먼저 자신부터 청결하지 않으면 다른것까지 청결할 수 없다며 몸 단정부터 철저하게 교육시켜야 한다.

지금의 땅을 기경하고 좋은 땅이 되기까지는 돌도 골라 내야하고 잡초도 뽑아 내야 하는 인고의 시간이 필요하다. 이렇게 진실된 수고의 땀을 흘리면 좋은 땅이 되어 가듯이 루앙프라방 Red Rider 야구단의 시작은 주변을 정리하는 것부터가 좋은 결실을 맺기 위한 첫 걸음이 될 것이다.

이렇게 배운 선수들은 야구뿐만 아니라 사회에 나가서도 반드시 성공하게 될 것이라 믿는다.

When he first entered Luang Prabang, Laos, he thought the Red Rider players were his first players.

The players' skills are better than expected because Lee Joon-young, who has been Laotian's women's coach for the past year, took a train from Vientiane to Luang Prabang for a year at his own expense every Friday to guide the players.

Coach Son Sa-rang watched closely and wrote everything in his notebook to teach the players, and taught them as they were when there was no coach Lee Joon-young. Doing this has made the players' skills better than expected. Coach Son Sa-rang always said that he didn't teach anything with a humble attitude, but senior Kim Han-geun praised Coach Son Sa-rang, saying that the players' skills could not improve like this without Coach Son Sa-rang.

As I watch him do this, I realize that adults are different from him. On the first day, he watches the players train and writes in his notebook how he will lead the players in a short period of time.

While watching the players train, the first thing I checked was the players' tools. I wrote it down in my notebook and the most necessary thing was the ball. The balls were old and wet, and the balls were a little heavier than I thought. On top of that, the threads burst and the players couldn't throw the ball properly.

And when he hits, he is surprised to see him hit without a helmet. Unfortunately, that day, when he was training with the players, the female player was hit in the head by the pitcher's ball. I don't know how surprised I was when I saw him from the side. Fortunately, it is not a major injury, but I am worried about him.

As soon as a female player was hit in the head, a senior player ran to her and asked her in Korean, "Are you okay?" and she goes out to defend herself, saying, "Oh, you're okay." How can she go out to defend herself after being hit in the head by a dizzy spell......

Kim Han-geun has been active as a female player since his foundation. Kim Han-geun, who saw the scene, immediately called his favorite junior and asked him to send her a box of baseballs and six helmets.

After finishing all training on the first day, Coach Son Sa-rang says, "Today is the day of ramen party." For the past two years, Coach Son Sa-rang said that he had a ramen party for the players at least once a week. For those many players, Coach Son Sa-rang generously fed the players ramen with the help and mercy of his acquaintances.

Senior Kim Han-geun carefully told Coach Son Sa-rang, "The baseball club house is a place where players live," but even before the dust and the table are so messy, the dust should be eaten by the players and leaders, and the table should not be cleaned next time, Coach Son Sa-rang rolls up his sleeves and wipes the table. Players who were watching this scene were surprised and tried to wipe them them themselves, but Coach Son Sa-rang wiped the table clean until the end.

Senior Kim Han-geun talks to coach Son Sa-rang like this. If the leader of "That's the right posture" shows an example first, the players are supposed to follow him. After watching this scene, I thought I could go to Korea comfortably.

"Baseball is not just about hitting, throwing, and catching." Before baseball, you should start by learning the basics first. They say that baseball already starts with the clubhouse. If your family is dirty, you cannot play baseball well. Next time, you should start by organizing the clubhouse first.

My senior realized it through his long career as a player and a leader. Just because you are good at baseball doesn't mean you will succeed in society... First of all, you should thoroughly educate yourself about your body, saying that if you don't clean yourself, you can't clean anything else.

It takes time to pick out stones and weed before we can honor the current land and become a good land. Just as this sincere sweat of hard work becomes a good land, the start of the Lu Wang Prabang Red Rider baseball team will be the first step toward good results by organizing the surroundings.

Players who have learned this way believe that they will surely succeed not only in baseball but also in society.
