< 해발 700 고지 >

지난 10월 31일 라오스 방문은 주라오스 정영수 대사님과 야구협회 전 캄파이 회장과의 면담을 하기 위해 라오스 비엔티안과 루앙프라방으로 들어왔다. 라오스에서 야구를 시작한것이 벌써 11년이(2014년 11월 12일) 되었다. 11년 동안 야구의 불모지인 라오스에 야구를 통해 수많은 젊은 학생들이 삶의 비전을 가졌고 또 야구를 통해 꿈과 희망을 가진것을 옆에서 지켜 보았다.

라오스 수도인 비엔티안에 있는 라오브라더스는 지난 10년 동안 '헐크파운데이션'에서 이들에게 전적으로 많은 지원을 했고 또 이들과 함께 야구를 했다. 이번에 라오스 루앙프라방으로 들어오게 된것은 한국에서 아마야구와 프로에서 유명한 선수로 활동했고 또 지도자로서도 오랜 시간동안 존경받는 지도자로 활동한 김한근 선배가 '수파노봉 대학'을 중심으로 북쪽지역 청소년들에게 야구를 소개하고 그들을 가르치기 위해 들어왔다.

몇일 전에도 소개했지만 여기 루앙프라방은 천연 자연이 그대로 보존되어 있는 관광도시이면서 도시전체가 세계문화유산으로 지정되어 있어 마음대로 집이나 건물을 지을 수 없는 상황이다. 그러다 보니 무엇을 지으려고 해도 당국의 까다로운 심사를 걸쳐야만 지을 수 있는 상황이다. 루앙프라방은 100년이 훌쩍 넘은 건물들이 도시 곳곳마다 얼마나 많은지 모른다. 루앙프라방 시내를 걷다보면 옛날로 타임머신 타고 걷는 느낌을 받을 때가 많다.

이런 아름다운 도시가 해발 700고지라는 사실에 또한번 놀랬다. 루앙프라방 도시는 700고지라고는 전혀 느낄 수 없을 정도로 평지로 형성이 되어 있는 도시다. 물론 차를 타고 조금만 나가면 산들이 많지만 이 도시가 해발 700고지라고는 전혀 깨달을 수 없을 정도로 평지로 되어 있다. 루앙프라방 중심가에는 맹콩강 줄기와 마주치는 큰 강줄기가 형성되어 있다.

손사랑 코치로부터 루앙프라방이 해발 700고지라는 이야기를 들어서 그런지 왠지 모르게 공기가 상당히 좋은 느낌을 받는다. 우리나라에서도 한창 유행했던 것이 사람이 제일 살기 좋은 높이가 해발 700고지라는 말에 많은 사람들이 태백으로 강원도로 또 지방으로 내려가 전원 주택을 짓고 사는 사람들이 많아졌다.

여기 루앙프라방도 공기가 좋기로 소문이 난 곳이고 또 관광의 도시다 보니 여유 있는 사람들이 전원주택을 짓고 노후와 건강을 위해 올라온 사람들이 많다고 한다. 이러듯 공기가 좋아서 그런지 아무리 피곤하고 힘들어도 자고 일어나면 몸이 한결 가볍고 상쾌한 느낌을 받는다.

루앙프라방은 80% 이상이 산악지형으로 되어 있어 지역적으로 모든 것들이 아직 열악한 편이다. 거기다가 야구장도 없는 척박한 곳이기에 앞으로 해 나가야 할 일들이 많다. 김한근 선배와 손사랑 코치하고 앞으로 있을 야구장과 청소년들에게 야구를 통해 큰 꿈과 비전을 전해주려고 한다.

처음 라오스에서 야구를 보급 시킬 때만 해도 늘 마음속으로 꿈꾸었던 일이 10년 만에 현실이 되니 야구인으로서 감격스럽기도 하지만 또 한편으로 루앙프라방에서 하나부터 다시 시작해야 한다는 부담이 나의 양 어깨를 짓누르고 있다. 아직 가야 할 일들이 많이 있기에 하나씩 야구 저변 확대를 위해 노력하고 있는 김한근 선배와 손사랑 코치하고 열심히 뛰어 갈 생각이다.

라오스에서 야구하기에는 아직도 열악한 환경에서 야구를 할 수 밖에 없는 것이 현실이다. 이제 첫발을 내디딘 루앙프라방 야구 팀을 위해 조금이라도 편안하게 야구를 할 수 있도록 김한근 선배와 손사랑 코치 그리고 선수들하고 함께 뛰어 다닐 것이다.

김한근 선배의 포부처럼 이들 젊은선수들이 야구를 통해 희망을 갖고 꿈을 가지게 될 것이고 또 미래에 대한 열정과 비전을 품으며 앞으로 나아갈 것이라 믿는다. 여기 루앙프라방 젊은 선수들이 먼 미래의 청사진들을 갖는 것을 보며 야구인으로서 보람을 갖게 된다.

루앙프라방에서 처음 시작하는 김한근 선배와 손사랑 코치한테 늘 강조하고 부탁하는 것은 절대 서둘러서는 안 된다. 지금부터 스텝 바이 스텝으로 천천히 걸어가야 한다.

For 11 years, through baseball in Laos, the barren land of baseball, I watched many young students have visions of life and dreams and hopes through baseball.

Lao Brothers in Vientiane, the capital of Laos, has provided a lot of support to them at the Hulk Foundation over the past decade and played baseball with them. Kim Han-geun, a senior who has been a famous player in amateur baseball and professional baseball in South Korea and a respected leader for a long time as a leader, came in to introduce baseball to teenagers in the northern part of the country and teach them, centering on Supanobong University.

As I introduced a few days ago, here in Luang Prabang is a tourist city where natural nature is preserved, and the entire city is designated a World Heritage Site, making it impossible to build houses or buildings at will. As a result, no matter what you try to build, you can build it only after strict screening by the authorities. Luang Prabang doesn't know how many buildings are over 100 years old in every part of the city. When you walk around the city of Luang Prabang, you often feel like you are walking on a time machine in the old days.

I was once again surprised to learn that this beautiful city is 700 heights above sea level. Luang Prabang is a flat city that can never be felt as high as 700. Of course, there are many mountains if you drive a little bit, but the city is flat enough to never realize that it is 700 heights above sea level. A large river stem that runs into the Maeng Kong River forms in the center of Luang Prabang.

Perhaps because I heard from Coach Son Sa-rang that Luang Prabang is 700 heights above sea level, I feel that the air is quite good for some reason. Many people went down to Gangwon Province and the provinces to build rural houses as Taebaek, saying that what was popular in Korea was that the best height for people to live is 700 degrees above sea level.

Luang Prabang here is also a place where the air is rumored to be good, and since it is a tourist city, many people who can afford it built rural houses and came up for their old age and health. No matter how tired and hard the air is, my body feels lighter and fresher when I sleep and wake up.

More than 80% of Luang Prabang is mountainous, so everything is still poor locally. In addition, there is a lot of work to be done in the future because it is a barren place without a baseball field. I coach Kim Han-geun and Son Sa-rang, and I want to deliver big dreams and visions through baseball to future baseball stadiums and teenagers.

When I first distributed baseball in Laos, what I always dreamed of in my mind became a reality in 10 years, so I am thrilled as a baseball player, but on the other hand, the burden of starting from scratch in Luang Prabang is weighing on my shoulders. There are still many things to go, so I plan to coach Kim Han-geun and Son Sa-rang, who are trying to expand the base of baseball one by one, and run hard.

The reality is that baseball is still forced to play in a poor environment to play in Laos. Now, I will run around with senior Kim Han-geun, coach Son Sa-rang and the players so that I can play baseball even a little comfortably for the Luang Prabang baseball team, which has taken its first step.

Like Kim Han-geun's ambition, I believe these young players will have hope and dreams through baseball and will move forward with passion and vision for the future. It is rewarding as a baseball player to see young players here in Luang Prabang have blueprints for the distant future.

You should never hurry to always stress and ask Kim Han-geun and Sohn Sa-rang, who are starting out at Luang Prabang, the two coaches. From now on, you should slowly walk step by step.
